Stephen King describes as the "best historical novelist" in a blurb on the cover of Smith's sixth and latest novel in the Egyptian series. The story opens as the Egyptian army is on its last legs, fighting a losing battle against the Hyksos, who have occupied lower Egypt for more than a century. A former slave, eunuch, alchemist and possible immortal, Taita, tells the tale, describing the death of his beloved Tamose, then his going out to lead the army himself in one final battle against the invaders. But during a break in the fighting, Taita is alerted to the arrival of an entirely new army, who comes from a city named Sparta in the Greek province of Lacedaemon. He recognizes King Hurotas of Sparta as Capt. Zaras, an Egyptian friend whose story was told earlier in the series, and a short time later the Hyksos army is wiped out Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt the Egyptians and the Spartans. Expecting a hero's welcome, Taita and the two armies go to the city of Luxor to appear before the new Pharaoh, Utteric Turo, eldest son of the late Tamose. They find Utteric is a coward and a pervert, Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt turns on them and orders Taita's arrest. Taita and Hurotas turn the tables on Utteric instead, and get his begrudging permission to advance on lower Egypt and drive out the rest of the Hyksos. Once this is completed, Hurotas and his companion, Admiral Hui, another old friend from previous books, leave for home in Sparta, taking three- quarters of the treasure acquired from the Hyksos, with the remainder saved for Utteric. Surely this time Taita will be welcomed with open arms, right? Not a chance. He is arrested and condemned to die a horrible death. Friends spirit him away from the clutches of the Pharaoh and take him to the war ship Memnon, which is under the command of Crown Prince Rameses, the brother of Utteric, who has realized it's time for him to flee if he is to stay alive. The Memnon sails to Greece, where Rameses is reunited with old family members he'd long believed were dead: Tehuti and Bekatha, two royal Egyptian princesses who are now married to Hurotas and Hui again, their story was covered in earlier novels. Tehuti has a daughter, Serrena, who is drop-dead gorgeous as are her mother and aunt, of course and who apparently was sired by the Greek god Apollo. The cousins Rameses and Serrena experience love at first sight, and Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt long a marriage is planned. Alas, plans fall apart as an agent of Utteric first attempts to recapture the Memnon and take Taita back to Egypt in chains, and when that doesn't happen, he abducts Serrena instead. Now, while Hurotas builds a massive army with the assistance of surrounding chieftains with plans to invade Egypt to rescue his daughter, Taita and Rameses plan to sneak into Egypt Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt find Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt themselves. Smith refers to the Hyksos introducing horses and chariots and improved weapons to Egypt during their occupation of the region, and he quickly describes a shield wall as a form of battle, when opposing forces link their shields together and try to wear through the defenses of the other side. An early-day magnetic compass is portrayed as magical, and the Egyptian and Greek gods and goddesses are treated as genuine. But the narrator Taita has a tendency to preen, to be self-congratulatory and is always inevitably right about things, which I found to be irritating Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt a while, and there were times when the twists and turns of the story smacked a little too much of convenient coincidence. Of course, that may just be the voice of the narrator, who is determined to tell his story his way. And while Stephen King is entitled to his opinion, I would argue Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt Bernard Cornwell is the better historical novelist. Fans of Wilbur Smith's Egypt Series are likely to enjoy the latest book in the series, even if I didn't. Those who are new to the series might be better off starting at the beginning, with the novel "River God. A story well worth reading, specially if you like Ancient Egypt its Pharaoh's and all the mysteries that come with it. Characters are bigger then life and their adventure is fantastic. I am a great fan of Wilbur Smith and hate to finish one of his books. I don't want to run out of novels by this extraordinary writer. Warlock is no exception. Unlike some other W. Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt fans I can enjoy the magical elements of the story, which are nothing like Harry Potter stories, but do contain more "magic" than one will find in the Courtney family series. The Egyptian setting lets one accept spells and charms affecting the lives of the protagonists. Fortunately Smith's deft touch doesn't overdue the magic. I have read almost every Wilbur Smith novel and some several times. I was fortunate to be able to find hard copies of River God which I plan to re-read. Warlock was very good - not quite as exciting as Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt God The only Wilbur Smith book that has disappointed is but I am very happy to have read and completed the Egyptian series despite the lack of eBooks for the first two of the Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt. Anyone who has completed just one of Wilbur Smith's books will return to the next without hesitation. Thank you for many hours of entertainment and education! Smith has done it again! The descriptions written and references used allows the imagination to picture the times and surroundings of Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt ancient civilization. The only thing missing was actually being there! From the beginning, it's another story that won't let you go and you're constantly anticipating the next twist and turn he Smith will take you. Well worth the money and reading time! Each of these Egyptian series have enough character and story material to make an epic movie or cable television drama. Have already ordered and received his next installment--"The Quest" which I'm sure will allow me to enter my time machine allowing me once more to share in the adventures of Taita, so many thousands of years ago. Thank you, Wilbur Smith! I am a big fan of Wilbur smith. He is a master of the historical novel. The audio cassette editions of his books, manufactured by Billiance audito, however are so poor in their quality as to be unusable and annoying to the listener. Brilliance audio's technical reproduction of books is the poorest quality of any that I have purchased- I'm an avid user of books on tape. I purchased this book to listen to on a cross country drive. The uneven audio necessitated a constant adjustment of the volume level. At moments the audio was so low that it was virtually unintelligible. If you increase the volume another portion would be so loud as to be painful usually spoken segments by characters. This requisite constant adjustments in volume made this excellent story a real pain to listen to. I thought that this might just have been an anomaly with this one particular tape. I purchased another unabridged novel "River God" also by Wilbur Smith and manufactured by brilliance audio - it was the same. I was so angry after investing a significant sum to purchase these tapes that I called the manufacturer, Brilliance audio's national customer service manager. She apologized and shipped me a replacement book on tape that she assured me had good production quality. I was shocked to find it the same as the previous books. My car stereo is manufactured by Bose and is high end. The Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt problem exists when attempting to play these tapes on a sony walkman cassette player. My conclusion is that Brilliance audio has no quality control or is using a cheaper tape or reproduction method than all of the other audio tape manufacurers. I wish Wilbur Smith had hired Jim Dale the reader of the Harry Potter books and had his novels recorded at another studio because those books are performed and reproduced magnificently. The audio renditions of both Warlock and River God, however, are simply poor quality and not worth their cost and unless you don't mind adjusting the volume continuously as you listen - don't Warlock: A Novel of Ancient Egypt them.
