AUSTRALIA AND THE PACIFIC: THE AMBIVALENT PLACE OF PACIFIC PEOPLES WITHIN CONTEMPORARY AUSTRALIA Scott William Mackay, BA (Hons), BSc July 2018 Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Australian Indigenous Studies Program School of Culture and Communication The University of Melbourne 0000-0002-5889 – Abstract – My thesis examines the places (real and symbolic) accorded to Pacific peoples within the historical production of an Australian nation and in the imaginary of Australian nationalism. It demonstrates how these places reflect and inform the ways in which Australia engages with the Pacific region, and the extent to which Australia considers itself a part of or apart from the Pacific. While acknowledging the important historical and contemporary differences between the New Zealand and Australian contexts, I deploy theoretical concepts and methods developed within the established field of New Zealand- centred Pacific Studies to identify and analyse what is occurring in the much less studied Australian-Pacific context. In contrast to official Australian discourse, the experiences of Pacific people in Australia are differentiated from those of other migrant communities because of: first, Australia’s colonial and neo-colonial histories of control over Pacific land and people; and second, Pacific peoples' important and unique kinships with Aboriginal Australians. Crucially the thesis emphasises the significant diversity (both cultural and national) of the Pacific experience in Australia. My argument is advanced first by a historicisation of Australia’s formal engagements with Pacific people, detailing intersecting narratives of their migration to Australia and Australia’s colonial and neo- colonial engagements within the Pacific region.

MEDIA GUIDE 2021 WELCOME Welcome to the 2021 Betfred Super League season on behalf of us all at Wigan Warriors. Thank you for taking the time to read our 2021 media guide. If you are writing any stories on Wigan Warriors, please let us know if we can help and if you have any suggestions for improvements we can make to the Club communications side. We know that some of you have seen and reported more Rugby League than anyone else on the planet, so we value your opinions and feedback on all the facets of Wigan Warriors’ media and communications operation and would welcome your thoughts. We look forward to working with you for what we are sure will be another thrilling Betfred Super League season. Thank you. Alastair Hancock Media and communications executive Wigan Warriors To our friends in the press and media, welcome to the 2021 Betfred Super League season. It is so great to be back after a much-needed rest following the exploits of 2020. Before I express my hopes for the 2021 season, it is so important that we reflect on 2020. The year that put the world under so much stress. When things happen, you often reflect afterwards on things you could have done differently. I am not sure any Super League club would say that they would have done. We drove to work each morning not knowing what the day would hold. Our language expanded to accommodate words such as ‘furlough’ and ‘social distancing’. We learned that the true heroes in life are not the ones running around in playing kits, but the ones who put their lives at risk on a daily basis to keep us safe.

Sir Peter Leitch Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 10th October 2018 Newsletter #239 Watene-Zelezniak New Captain For Kiwis By NZRL ULLBACK DALLIN Watene-Zelezniak has today become one of the youngest captains in New Zealand Frugby league history after being named to lead the Kiwis in their Trans-Tasman Triple Header Test against the Kangaroos at Mount Smart Stadium on Saturday (7.45pm kick-off). The ascension to the captaincy is a triple celebration for the Hamilton-born Penrith Panthers star, who turned 23 on August 17. It coincides with he and his wife Purdy’s third wedding anniversary today while Watene-Zelezniak emulates the achievement of his great grandfather Tipene (Steve) Watene, one of New Zealand rugby league’s most revered figures. He was the first Maori to captain the Kiwis in 1936-1937 and the only person who has repre- sented the New Zealand rugby league side and become a Member of Parliament. “I was really humbled when Madge (Michael Maguire) offered me the chance to captain my country. It’s a huge honour, especially following in my great grandfather’s steps,” said Kiwi No. 794 Watene-Zelezniak. His first Test as captain will be the eighth of his career since debuting against the Kangaroos in Newcastle in 2016. “Dallin lives the values we’re looking for and embodies the new direction we’re heading in with the Kiwis,” said Kiwi head coach Michael Maguire. Of Maori heritage through his mother, Watene-Zeleniak is of Tongan and Polish extraction on his father’s side.

MEDIA RELEASE NEWCASTLE RUGBY FOUNDATION TO BENEFIT FROM NATIONAL LOTTERY HERITAGE FUND SUPPORT FOR RUGBY LEAGUE PROJECT The Newcastle Rugby Foundation has received confirmation of a grant totalling £99,000 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to document the history of rugby league in the north east of England. The Foundation, the official charity of both Newcastle Thunder RL and Newcastle Falcons RU clubs, will embark on a two year project that will chronicle the sport at both professional and community levels all the way back to the very early 1900s. The project will collate match information, photos, memorabilia, memories and news reportss and make these available for public consumption via the establishment of an on-line museum. The Foundation will work with the North East Rugby League, Tyne & Wear Archives & Museums and clubs and societies across the region to gather contributions for the project. The programme of activity will also include the training of volunteers, an education element, work with dementia support groups and a series of exhibitions. Heritage numbers will be allocated to every player who has played professional rugby league for a club in the region. This will include Wallsend, South Shields and St Paul’s in the early twentieth century, Newcastle Rugby League in the 1930s and Gateshead/Newcastle Thunder over the past two decades. Speaking about the award the Newcastle Rugby Foundation Chairman Mick Hogan said, “We are incredibly grateful for the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund that allows this exciting and important project to take place. With the Rugby League World Cup staging five games in the region in October and November 2021, the emergence of Newcastle Thunder and the growth of the community game it’s the right time to embark on this.
