We played a bit better in Scott Davis 1 the second half, we competed with them Ashley Walter 1 and we didn’t buckle. If you look at how Joey Abbs 1 many we were missing from our starting XI on Tuesday, they’ve done alright against a Honours team from a higher league. Last time out... Tuesday 29th October 19:45 Soham Town Rangers 1 Harrow Borough 4 By Simon Cullum

Harrow Borough comfortably progressed to the next round of the League Cup with a 4-1 win at the Lane, scoring all four goals in the fi rst half. The Greens made fi ve changes from Saturday’s side as Dan De’Ath and George Darling returned to the starting XI. With both Dan Bircham and Leigh Follen out injured, Simon Allen stepped up from the reserves to play in goal, while there were debuts for recent signings Barry McGann and Joey Abbs. James McCabe, Martin Bromwich and Buster Harradine dropped to the bench, while Chris Lindsay was absent due to injury. Harrow started the game on the attack and after only two minutes Brandon Horner sent in a shot from the right which Allen just prevented from crossing the line. The Greens’ fi rst attempt came moments later but, after working his way into the area, Ben Sawyer could only fi re wide across goal. The visitors were soon back on the attack, and it remained like this for the rest of the half. Allen tipped Victor Osobu’s low strike wide and Rob Wolleaston fi red over before Borough took control, scoring two goals within a three minute spell. The fi rst came after six minutes when Wolleaston was given space in the area to turn and slot under Allen, before Osobu added a second in the ninth minute, placing Jordan Berry’s ball past the keeper. Abbs, then Scott Davis had opportunities to pull a goal back for the hosts, but both saw goal-bound efforts blocked. The visitors added a third in the 27th minute when Osobu was allowed to run into the area, taking the ball wide of Allen before squaring it to Chendlik, leaving him with an easy fi nish. Wolleaston then received a diagonal ball to fi re low at Allen, and Chendlik had a shot cleared off the line by Jordan Gent, before the hosts made a double change with 11 minutes remaining; Bromwich and McCabe replacing Barry McGann and De’Ath. Berry increased Harrow’s lead in the 38th minute, fi ring a long-range effort past Allen, with Wolleaston and Chendlik also having further efforts before the break. Soham came out a better side after half time and, despite the scoreline, made it more competitive. Darling and Wolleaston both had shots at the opposition keeper, and Abbs had a shot defl ected wide. The Greens were given the opportunity to reply when they were awarded a penalty on the hour mark after Danny Leech upended Gent. Abbs stepped up to send fellow debutant, Harrow goalkeeper James Shea, the wrong way to score his fi rst for the club. He came close to adding a second moments later, but from Connor Wood’s corner, the midfi elder was denied by the woodwork and Gent’s follow-up header was also blocked. Both sides made late alterations and the Greens replaced Abbs with Matt Simpson, a reserves regular making his debut for the fi rst team. Meanwhile for Harrow, Horner and Osobu made way for Michael Barima and Daniel Llacer respectively. As the game progressed, Darling and Chendlik placed wide, Wood saw a left-sided shot saved, whilst Llacer was denied by the woodwork from Shaun Lucien’s corner. Harrow go through to the third round of the League Cup, where they will face Wealdstone, while the Greens will turn their full attention to today’s clash with Chorley.

11 A brief history Chorley FC The appointment of former Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers captain Garry Flitcroft as manager in May 2010 heralded a massive upturn in fortunes for Chorley Football Club. Securing such a high-profi le manager helped increase interest from both supporters and local businesses and this in turn helped Flitcroft to assemble a promotion-winning squad in his fi rst season, the club’s fi rst in 23 years. Since the heady days of Conference football between 1988 and 1990, Chorley FC had slowly drifted down the divisions with little success; in the season before Flitcroft’s appointment the club fi nished in 16th place in the First Division North with an average attendance of just 271.

In Flitcroft’s fi rst season in charge, the club lead the First Division North for the opening months before fi nishing in third place, while average home attendance increased by an impressive 179%. The play-offs themselves saw astonishing crowds fl ock to Victory Park with 1,515 witnessing the semi-fi nal 2-1 victory over Curzon Ashton, before 2,950 turned up to see the Magpies defeat AFC Fylde 2-0 in the fi nal. The following season in the Northern Premier League Premier Division the Magpies again fi nished third and qualifi ed for the play-offs. Sadly, there was to be no promotion this time as FC United of Manchester won the semi-fi nal tie at Victory Park 2-0 in front of an all ticket 2,754. However, Chorley did lift the Lancashire Challenge Trophy for the fi rst time in 29 years at the Reebok Stadium after beating Kendal Town 2-1 in the fi nal.

After eight seasons of playing rugby union, Chorley converted to in 1883. After a series of friendly matches against clubs like Wigan, Preston North End and Blackburn Rovers, Chorley joined the Lancashire Junior League in 1889 and won the Lancashire Alliance title in 1892/93.

Victory Park has been the home of the Magpies since 1920, with the ground being named to commemorate the end of the First World War. In 1945, shortly after a crowd of over 4,000 had watched the Magpies beat Third Division team Accrington Stanley in the fi rst leg of the FA Cup First Round, the club’s wooden main stand was destroyed by fi re. A fund was set up to fi nance its replacement, and local journalist Tom Gillett wrote the book “Magpie Parade”, a history of the club to that date, with all proceeds from its sale going to the fund. Two years later the replacement stand was opened and it is still the focal point of Victory Park.

The club enjoyed great success between 1958 and 1965, winning the county’s league title three times, fi nishing runners-up three times, and lifting the Lancashire Junior Cup fi ve times from their six appearances in the fi nal. For good measure there were also two Combination Cup successes and another runner-up spot, plus an appearance in the fi rst round of the FA Cup in 1963. It’s no coincidence that this was the era of Peter

12 Watson, Chorley’s legendary prolifi c marksman, scoring an incredible 372 goals in his 450 appearances for the club.

In 1968 the Magpies became one of the founder members of the Northern Premier League and the club has competed in this competition for the majority of the seasons ever since, with the exception of one season in the Lancashire Combination, nine in the Cheshire League and two in the Conference. The mid-to-late 1980s were undoubtedly the club’s most successful period on the larger stage, with promotion to the Football Conference and repeated appearances in the FA Cup ‘proper’. The club only remained in the Conference for two seasons before dropping back to the NPL in 1990, then down into the First Division in 1998-99. In 2002/03 the club came close to regaining Premier Division status but lost out on penalties to Radcliffe Borough in the play-off fi nal.

The Magpies have tasted glory down the years in the FA Cup and the FA Trophy. They have appeared in the FA Cup fi rst round proper nine times, the most recent being 1990/91 where they reached the second round with a 2-1 win over Bury. The club’s best season in the FA Trophy was 1995/96, when they lost over two semi-fi nal legs to eventual winners Macclesfi eld Town.

Over the years many Chorley players have progressed to the Football League, including two who went on to play for England; winger Arthur Cunliffe (signed by Blackburn Rovers in 1927) and striker Paul Mariner (snapped up by Plymouth Argyle in 1972). Mariner played in the 1982 World Cup fi nals and helped Ipswich Town to FA Cup and UEFA Cup glory. Former Chorley forward Teddy Hodgson was in Burnley’s 1914 FA Cup-winning side only to lose his life in the First World War.

The 2013/14 season marks the clubs 130th anniversary.

15 The Big Interview with Buster Harradine

One hundred and nine minutes in to Soham’s FA Trophy fi rst qualifying round replay at home to Grantham Town, the Greens faithful watched on nervously, their side leading 2-1 after a late Gingerbreads equaliser sent the tie into extra time Despite the extra man advantage after Grantham’s Gary King was sent off, the tie was by no means over. Enter Buster Harradine. With 11 minutes to go, the 28-year- old rifl ed a spectacular 25-yard drive into the top corner to send the home crowd into raptures. Their ‘keeper had no chance, and Soham went on to win 4-1 to secure today’s clash with Chorley. “I was relieved, really,” admitted Harradine when asked how he felt watching his strike hit the back of the net. “2-1 is a diffi cult scoreline, but when that third goal went in we knew we’d won the game.” Somewhat of a fans’ favourite, Harradine enjoyed a successful campaign in 2012/13, scoring 20 goals and claiming 22 assists, and he hopes he’ll soon be hitting a purple patch this season. “It’s nice [to be a fans’ favourite] and you do feel a little bit of pressure because you don’t want to let them down,” he said. “We’ve put in some good performances in the cup but we haven’t brought that into the league yet. We’ll keep plugging away and hopefully it’ll click for us. “I’m hoping to fi nd last season’s form too; I’d like to get into double-fi gures at least. At “...dream that Soham the start I suffered a bit of second-season would reach Wembley,.” syndrome, but I think I’ve got rid of that now.” Harradine’s fruitful fi rst season at Julius Martin Lane occurred after he joined the club from Great Shelford, motivated by the opportunity to play at a higher level. “I’d played Kershaw football all my adult life and I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t take the chance to step up.” “I’ve had more clubs than Tiger Woods! I’ve also played for Milton, Fulbourn Institute, Waterbeach and Cambridge University Press, with second and third spells at some.

16 “Winning the treble at Fulbourn was probably the highlight of my senior career, especially winning the league there in my second year at the club. We had to win our last 20 games to do so and I played in goal for all of them.” It won’t be a surprise to Soham fans to learn about Harradine’s previous experience between the sticks, particularly as he’s appeared there on several occasions this season after injuries to Dan Bircham and Leigh Follen. “I played in goal a lot when I was younger and I’m always happy to step up if Soham need me,” he added. The Greens will be seven games away from a trip to Wembley should they win today, and although Harradine acknowledges it’s unlikely – there’s certainly nothing wrong with dreaming. “It’s a bit of a far-fetched dream that Soham would reach Wembley,” he said, “but if you’re in the cup you’ve still got a slim chance of making it. “I don’t think anyone’s expecting us to win today, so we’ll play with no pressure – that’s when we play at our best.”

Bognor Regis Town manager Jamie Howell won the applause of fans, players and offi cials at Nyewood Lane when he collected September’s Macron Manager of the Month Award.

The Rocks manager was honoured with the Premier Division’s accolade before guiding his side to a 2-1 win over Thurrock in the FA Trophy’s First Qualifying Round. Howell won the top fl ight’s managerial award after leading his side to fi ve wins out of fi ve in September, with three of the victories coming away from home.

Ryman League Vice-Chairman and Company Secretary Nick Robinson, pictured presenting Howell with a glass trophy to mark his achievement before kick-off, said: “Jamie is well respected by both his own players and other managers - that is the sign of a good manager. Congratulations to him from everybody involved in the Ryman League and our sponsors Macron.”

VCD Athletic manager Tony Russell won Macron’s Ryman North award for the second time this season and Guernsey’s Tony Vance collected Macron’s Ryman South honour.

Worthing hold minutes silence

Ryman League Worthing held a minute’s silence for a former youth team star who’s been killed in Afghanistan.

Before kicking off in their 3-2 win over Sittingbourne in Ryman South, players wearing black armbands led the tribute to Lance Corporal James Brynin who suffered a fatal gunshot wound while on patrol in Helmand province earlier this month.

The 22-year-old, pictured centre above right, grew up in nearby Shoreham and played for Worthing in his teens before joining the Intelligence Corp in February 2011.

A minute’s applause was also held by the club’s current youth team players during a fi xture at Woodside Road for Brynin who’s also played for Horsham and a number of other local sides as well as making four appearances for the Sussex County FA U16s Representative side.

A Worthing spokesman said: “We were proud and honoured to be able to pay our own tribute to a former player who gave his life serving his country.”

I’m happy to see our lads with the reserves; it’s encouraging as Andrew Lee believes if you are good enough, you are old enough and that puts trust in our youth system. From a personal point of view, this is one of my most challenging seasons as I look to establish where my own destiny at the club lies. Having been here 10 years now, it’s important that my standards and motivation do not slip at all and we carry on working well with youth development. I love this club and I am very lucky to have been entrusted by the managers above me to bring players through. I hope that the same pride I have in the lads who step up is shared by the supporters.
