Questions for Quinn

Q: I still live with my parents and commute to classes every day, but they found out I have a girlfriend that they thought was simply a friend of mine. Now they refuse to let me see her at all and constantly monitor everything I do while I’m at home because they disapprove. I’m a junior in college—how can I get them to understand I’m responsible enough to maintain a relationship with someone I’m genuinely interested in?

A: This is a rather difficult situation to be in. Your parents probably adhere to a “my house, my rules” type of policy, and if they do, then there is honestly not much you can do, unless you plan on becoming more independent. You can’t simply control your parents’ thoughts on this matter—they are your parents and they are still human beings with their own opinions. Perhaps you haven’t displayed a sense of independence from their standards and they are reluctant about accepting your opinion about this girl. Try to play by their rules first and prove you are actually as responsible as you think you are. Earning their trust will also gain their respect and make your own decisions much easier to make in the future. It might not be an easy solution, but it will most likely benefit you in the long run as long as you remain dependent on them.

Q: My friend just went through a bad breakup and I don’t think he’s really over it. His ex-girlfriend got with someone else but already broke it off and she’s trying to get back with my friend. He’s unstable and asking me for my opinion on whether or not it’s worth going back to her, but he already seems so adamant about it that I don’t know if telling him what I really feel will help. Should I tell him about what I really think, or should I tell him something he wants to hear?

A: One thing is definitely true about this situation: simply trying to go along with what he feels isn’t doing him any justice and it certainly doesn’t make you a better friend for lying about it, either. It may be what he wants to hear, but it sounds like his breakup was a mess and that getting back together with her is an ultimate mistake for him. Rather than sounding too blunt or uncaring about the situation, try to word your advice without any hostility and one that supports him without enabling him. Ask him why the relationship ended in the first place, why she sought out someone else so quickly, and why he suddenly seems so desperate to get her back. Your body language will be important as well. You need to be warm and nurturing but not enabling. If he ends up ignoring your advice, wish him well and don’t discourage him or antagonize him about it, but advise him to at least be careful. Just be a good and warm friend and don’t isolate him- doing so will probably result in ending your friendship and him making more bad decisions. 18 ARTS 11.10.09 The RetrIever Weekly Comics
