States of Incarceration and Subordination in the Learning and Lived Experiences of Youth in a Juvenile Detention Facility
ARE THE[SE] KIDS ALRIGHT?: STATES OF INCARCERATION AND SUBORDINATION IN THE LEARNING AND LIVED EXPERIENCES OF YOUTH IN A JUVENILE DETENTION FACILITY by Jonathan Patrick Arendt A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Jonathan Patrick Arendt 2012 ARE THE[SE] KIDS ALRIGHT?: STATES OF INCARCERATION AND SUBORDINATION IN THE LEARNING AND LIVED EXPERIENCES OF YOUTH IN A JUVENILE DETENTION FACILITY Doctor of Philosophy 2012 Jonathan Patrick Arendt Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning University of Toronto ABSTRACT This study examines the dynamics and implications of trans-spatial subordination in/across the lived experiences of six incarcerated participant youths in a secure custody facility for juveniles in Louisiana. Five male teenagers (four African American, one White) and one female teenager (African American) discuss the limitations, harassment, and confinement in various aspects of their lives and speak about the impact on their expectations for the future. The author employs several methodologies in order to develop a multimedia, multifaceted representation of their lives. The narratives elicited through interviews provide the bulk of the data as the participants describe this perpetual subordination. The photographs, resulting from the implementation of a visual ethnographic methodology, provide images that serve as catalysts for introspection and analysis of significance in the mundane and routine, particularly as they apply to the carceral facilities, structures, and policies themselves. Film viewing and discussion offer an array of depictions of youth and criminality to which the youths responded, granting a simultaneous peek at how these marginalized youths viewed themselves and how mainstream media productions depict them. -
GIRL with a CAMERA a Novel of Margaret Bourke-White
GIRL WITH A CAMERA A Novel of Margaret Bourke-White, Photographer Commented [CY1]: Add Photographer? By Carolyn Meyer Carolyn Meyer 100 Gold Avenue SW #602 Albuquerque, NM 87102 505-362-6201 [email protected] 2 GIRL WITH A CAMERA Sometime after midnight, a thump—loud and jarring. A torpedo slams into the side of our ship, flinging me out of my bunk. The ship is transporting thousands of troops and hundreds of nurses. It is December 1942, and our country is at war. I am Margaret Bourke-White, the only woman photographer covering this war. The U.S. Army Air Forces has handed me a plum assignment: photographing an Allied attack on the Germans. I wanted to fly in one of our B-17 bombers, but the top brass ordered me to travel instead in the flagship of a huge convoy, headed from England through the Straits of Gibraltar towards the coast of North Africa. It would be safer than flying, the officers argued. As it turns out, they were dead wrong. Beneath the surface of the Mediterranean, German submarines glide, silent and lethal, stalking their prey. One of their torpedoes has found its mark. I grab my camera bag and one camera, leaving everything else behind, and race to the bridge. I hear the order blare: Abandon ship! Abandon ship! There is not enough light and not enough time to take photographs. I head for Lifeboat No. 12 and board with the others assigned to it, mostly nurses. We’ve drilled for it over and over, but this is not a drill. -

This means that we use a lot of resources — steel, aluminum, and plastics, for instance. But at Toyota, large scale manufacturing doesn't mean large scale waste. In 1992 we introduced our Global Earth Charter to promote environmental responsibility throughout our operations. And in North America it is already reaping significant benefits. We recycle 376 million pounds of steel annually, and aggressive recycling programs keep 18 million pounds of other scrap materials from landfills. Idioms-And-Expressions.Pdf
Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context. -

The Victorious Life 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 December 12, 2020
The Victorious Life 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 December 12, 2020 Last week we learned how to Experience Salvation in a personal way: • We sense our need. • We acknowledge our sinfulness. • We repent and seek forgiveness. • We accept Christ’s sacrifice for us. Today we will go a step further by growing in Jesus. Transformation – Sanctification {free from the POWER of sin} Spiritual Growth is a popular phrase within Christian circles, but we don’t always understand what it means: • Reading the Bible more? • Praying more? • Attending church more? None of those things are spiritual growth. Spiritual growth will incorporate things like reading Scripture, praying, worshipping God, and coming together as a community of believers – they are the tools we use for growth. Just because we are Christian’s doesn’t, by default, mean that we are deeply rooted in Christ, growing spiritually, or maturing to be like Him. A quick look in the mirror will give us that answer, are we acting the way Jesus would act, doing the things Jesus would do? Are we more loving, kinder, less angry than we were a year ago…five years ago…ten years ago…twenty years ago? • Galatians 5:22-23 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. If we are not becoming the above, then we might be aging but we are NOT maturing spiritually. Growing in Jesus means we come and walk alongside him, go where he is going and learn what he is teaching, because that’s what a disciple does. -

Project Rabbit Episode 0: Run Away Rabbit A Major Qualifying Project submitted to the faculty of the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Science Submitted By: William Poirier, Xavier Mauprivez Advised By: Britton Snyder, Joseph Beck 1 Abstract This game tells a story of tyranny, rebellion, and the struggle for freedom that all humans desire. “Project Rabbit Episode 0: Run Away Rabbit” is a combination of a visual novel and adventure game, with a secondary focus on stealth. You play as Todd, a genetically engineered sapient rabbit created by Doctor William Jones. Todd lives in paradise, but underneath his rabbit hole exists a dark authoritarian municipality called New Arc City. Take Todd down the rabbit hole, and see how deep it goes. 2 Introduction 2a The Team Project Rabbit was built by the two-man team of William Poirier and Xavier Mauprivez. William was responsible for the design, concept, writing, main art and animation, and some programming. Xavier was responsible for the game’s primary programming, overall sound design, the entire original soundtrack, and transitional sequences. Overlap between roles occurred often due to the small nature of the team. The MQP was supervised by Britton Snyder (IMGD) and Joseph Beck (CS). 2b Gameplay Description Project Rabbit is a single player point and click adventure game. The player controls the main character, Todd the rabbit, by clicking on the screen, making him move towards the points where the player clicked, while staying on the path set up for him. He can click on items to pick them up or click on switches and other objects to activate them.
