The Catholic Society at Cardiff University hit the headlines recently when a letter from the University’s Catholic Chaplain to the University’s Catholic Society’s President went viral. Cardiff’s Students Union voted on 21 November to become “Pro-Choice”. Its previous position had been to remain “neutral” after two previous attempts by pro-abortionists to overturn the Students Union’s neutrality in ten years had failed. University Chaplain Fr Sebastian Jones and previous Catholic Society presidents had negotiated with the Students Union on both previous occasions that such a change in position was wholly un-necessary and would result in the University’s Catholic Society having to withdraw from the Student’s Union as it could not be required to give voluntary and material support for the pro-abortion lobby on Campus. Its request was dismissed. Catholic students were verbally abused at the 21 November meeting and their request for the “pro-choice” motion not to be adopted by the Students Union was heavily defeated. Fr Sebastian said “it is deeply troubling to me as a university chaplain and as a visiting lecturer in canon law, that across many of the country’s university campuses similar motions curtailing the right to freedom of speech and conscience concerning the inalienable dignity of the human person are being undermined. In a sector that claims to champion inclusivity and diversity, the intolerance of Catholic Church’s social teaching is a troubling development.” See editorial on Page 3 2 CATHOLIC PEOPLE ARCHBISHOP GEORGE’S A Meditation for Advent ENGAGEMENTS Next Sunday, 1 December, is the beginning For the bus or train. of the Season of Advent, the beginning of For the delivery or repair man. the Church’s year as it prepares for For the doctor or the hospital appointment. HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH CHIPPING NORTON 1836 - 20O8 To The Reader. To-day, as we worship at Holy Trinity, we probably give few thoughts as to how there came to be a church here in the first place nor that, little more than one hundred and seventy years ago, life was not very easy as a practising Roman Catholic. Much of what we have today is due to three major physical influences down the years, the Earls of Shrewsbury (the Talbot family), the Jesuit Fathers and all those Religious who have served the Parish down the years. They all deserve our thanks and prayers. This rather leaves out the parishioners, but whether we like it or not, in real terms our role is a minor one even if for some it involves a lot of “minor work”. It might be better if more of us took more part in Parish affairs and spread the work load a bit but nevertheless, we should not overlook the role the Faith of parishioners has played in our small church, in the past and will continue to play into the future. This history is intended as a reminder of both the past and present parish and is concerned with three things – the physical structure of the church buildings, the Religious who have served the par- ish down the years and the parishioners for whom the Church and they exist. The origins of this and a Short History published earlier would not have come about without the suggestion of Father Frank Hull in 2006 and the major sources are acknowledged later.

He founded around 10 monasteries and was known for his simple way of life and asceticism; he taught his followers to refrain from eating meat and drinking anything but water. The miracle most commonly associated with St David is said to have taken place whilst he was preaching to a large crowd at the Synod of Brefi. It is said that the ground on which he was stood rose up to form a small hill, in order for everyone to see him. Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus! Prayer: God, on this day, we remember Saint David, your servant.
