What is covered and how? The present article reports on a comparative study of a license-financed public broadcaster and an advertising- financed channel in Norway – the NRK and TV2, respectively. Both channels give priority to international news. While the NRK devotes more time to foreign news (both in absolute and relative numbers) than TV2 does, other aspects of the coverage are strikingly similar: The news is event oriented, there is heavy use of eyewitness footage, and certain regions are hardly visible. At least three explanations can be used to understand these findings: the technological platform (what footage is available, etc.) and the existence of a common news culture that is based on ratings and similar views on what is considered “good television”. A third factor is that both channels still have public service obligations. Keywords: foreign news, television news, public service Introduction The media direct attention toward events and occurrences in the world, and help to shape our thinking as well as our understanding of these events. The potentially greatest influ- ence can be expected to occur with regard to matters of which we have little or no direct experience. Foreign news is a prime example of an area where most of us are reliant on what the media report. Studies of foreign news have a long tradition (i.e., Galtung & Ruge 1965) and there is a vast body of literature focusing on the criteria for what becomes news (e.g., Harcup & O’Neill 2001; Hjarvard 1995, 1999; Shoemaker & Cohen 2006). -

PSB 3.0 TV and the Digital and Global Challenge Ib Bondebjerg Public funding for culture, film and media in general has been a strong element in what we understand to be at the core of the Scandinavian welfare state. It became a crucial part of Scandinavian cultural policy in the 1960s, and in the political philosophy of the Social Democrats and their political allies, the cultural arm of policy became impor- tant as a means to secure a diverse and inclusive public sphere. The birth of modern, visual media like film, radio and television became instruments in a political, social and cultural dialogue across social and cultural differences and barriers. They became a central part of what constitutes an “imagined community” (Anderson 1983) as carri- ers of those stories, narratives and communicative forms that constitute our everyday lives and feeling of belonging. Social and political issues, conflict and debate are central to modern mediated societies and public spheres, but so are deeper social and cultural stories of our present and past. News and documentaries are vital for our understanding of being national citizens as well as citizens of a global world, but TV drama and other forms of fiction are just as important for our ability to understand the contemporary and historical dimensions of society and culture. Fiction can speak to our deeper emotions and collective social feeling of being connected. In this sense, fiction, documentaries and other factual programmes are all part of a well functioning public sphere. For those many European countries that created the modern forms of public support for culture, PSB media were crucial for the diversity of culture and debate in the public sphere. -

Velkommen til DR i Aarhus DR i Aarhus er hovedkvarter for DR’s største programproducerende afdeling, som hedder DR Danmark. Udover redaktionerne i Aarhus består DR Danmark af 8 regionale mediehuse, som ligger spredt ud over hele landet fra Aalborg i nord til Aaben- raa i syd, Holstebro i vest til Rønne i øst. I DR’s 28.000 kvadratmeter store hus i Aarhus og de 8 regioner er al DR’s pro- gramproduktion udenfor DR Byen samlet, med det formål at afspejle mere af hele Danmark i DR’s samlede tilbud af programmer til danskerne. Hvert år laver medarbejderne i DR Aarhus ca. 18.000 timers radio og 500 timers tv samt en lang række hjemmesider. DR Aarhus laver indslag og programmer til næsten alle DRs kanaler. F. eks. Forord Coronapandemien satte sit tydelige præg på hele det danske I 2020 satte DR også fokus på den danske natur med temaet samfund i 2020. Den påvirkede også DR’s sendeflade og ind- ’Vores Natur’. Temaet blev foldet ud i den unikke naturserie hold. Begivenheder og programmer blev aflyst, og samtidig ’Vilde, vidunderlige Danmark’, som bragte seerne helt tæt opstod der behov for oplysning om corona – og for tilbud, som på dyrerigets store dramaer i den danske natur. Og i radioen kunne bringe folk sammen. gav en lang række naturprogrammer nye perspektiver på den danske natur. ’Vores Natur’ blev gennemført i partnerskab med Med udgangspunkt i ’Sammen om det vigtige’ – DR’s strategi Friluftsrådet, Naturstyrelsen og Danske Naturhistoriske Museer, frem mod 2025 – prioriterede DR i 2020 fortsat at understøtte som stod klar med aktiviteter og naturformidling i hele landet, demokratiet, bidrage til dansk kultur og styrke fællesskaber i ligesom landets biblioteker byggede videre på DR’s indhold. -

MedieKultur | Journal of media and communication research | ISSN 1901-9726 Article – Open section DR3 på fl ow og streaming – en todelt kanalanalyse Mads Møller Tommerup Andersen MedieKultur 2018, 65, 138-157 Published by SMID | Society of Media researchers In Denmark | www.smid.dk Th e online version of this text can be found open access at https://tidsskrift.dk/mediekultur Abstract Th is article conducts a two-tiered analysis of DR3’s development within the last fi ve years and fi nds big diff erences in the DR3 programmes that dominate the respec- tive ratings for fl ow TV and streaming: Sports, big music events and a spin-off show are among the most watched on the fl ow channel while fi ction (primarily SKAM) dominates the streaming numbers. Th is underlines the diffi culties in having what the article calls the two-tiered distribution strategy and in having to produce for two diff erent platforms and viewer groups who can have very diff erent genre preferences, which is almost like managing two diff erent TV channels at once. Th e article’s qualitative contribution shows two trends in the channel’s many factual programmes – respectively the journalistic experiments and the intimate documen- tary portraits – which support the DR3 brand’s core values concerning brutal hon- esty, experiments on one’s own body and absurdities in society. Compared to the channel’s recent fi ction strategy, the conclusion points to a channel that can have the potential to be a sandbox channel for DR by testing new programming con- cepts and time formats. -

After an English and Danish abstract of the findings, the dissertation is divided into two separate parts: synopsis and papers. The latter consist of three academic studies or scientific articles, of which two have been published as of November 2018. The synopsis is a summary of the relationship between the three studies and their contribution to the entire PhD dissertation. Furthermore, it provides additional information about and discussions of the background, methods, and results that are not presented in the scientific articles. The journey for this dissertation started in April 2013, when I, a former executive from the media industry, read an article in a Danish business newspaper in which a professor in media management claimed that media organizations were facing significant business challenges and would benefit from applying industrial PhD candidates. Several actors deserve thanks for making this journey happen: Discovery Networks, undertaking a PhD project for the first time ever globally, and, from Roskilde University, my supervisor, Kristian Sund, and, for his initial support, Søren Jagd. However, my biggest thanks are due to my fantastic wife, Lone, who supported the journey all the way! After more than three years of studies, I am confident that the phenomenon of business model innovation provides some key answers to the question of how firms can survive in both the short and the long term. -
