LUMS home page: http://www.lums.lancs.ac.uk/ An analysis of consumer response to corruption: Italy's Calciopoli scandal Babatunde Buraimo∗ Giuseppe Migaliy Rob Simmonsz July 22, 2014 Abstract The literature on economics of corruption is lacking in evidence on consumer responses to identifiable scandals. The Calciopoli episode affecting Italian football in the 2005/06 season serves as an opportunity for an empirical investigation into consumer (fan) behaviour following punishments imposed by the Italian league on clubs whose offi- cials were found guilty of corrupt practices. Using a difference-in-difference estimation method, where the convicted teams are the treatment group, we find that home atten- dances for treated teams fell by around 16%, relative to control group teams defined as those clubs not subject to league-imposed punishment. We show further that the fall in attendances identified with Calciopoli punishment resulted in non-trivial gate revenue reductions. Our results suggest that a sizeable number of fans of the punished clubs were subsequently deterred from supporting their teams inside the stadium. We explore alternative explanations of this adverse fan response. Keywords: Corruption; consumer demand; Calciopoli; football; attendances. JEL Classification: L83 1 Introduction The purpose of this paper is to identify, using a difference-in-difference methodology, a pos- sible consumer response to a specific episode of corruption.

Th is raid searched eighteen Serie A clubs, including AC Milan, Juventus, Inter, Roma and Lazio. Eleven clubs from Serie B were raided, including Livorno, Bari and Brescia, as well as a further twelve from the lower leagues. Dubbed Calcio Malato (Sick Football), these raids were ordered by prosecutors in Naples to investigate tax evasion and money laundering, which they suspected took place through the transfer of players. Echoing the fi nancial problems of 2001, the Neapolitan magistrates also alleged that clubs had made ‘ systematic ’ billing for non-existent transactions. Further links to past scandals resurfaced when it was revealed that the Guardia were also investigating the agents Alejandro Mazzoni and Alessandro Moggi – the latter being a central fi gure in the calciopoli scandal of 2006. Many clubs declined to comment on the investigation. Th e president of Inter, Massimo Moratti, sought to defuse the situation and stated that ‘ It wasn ’ t a search, just a request for past documentation.

  • Chapter I Introduction
1 Chapter I Introduction Background Football is the most popular sport in the world, with 240 million participants worldwide (FIFA, 2007). Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has 208 members, outnumbering United Nations (UN) or International Olympic Committee (IOC). The continued high level of public and commercial interest is reflected by another year of strong growth. The combined revenue of out top 20 clubs was €3.9 billion in 2007/08. More than three times the level in the first edition covering of Deloitte football money league 1996/97, and a € 220 million (6%)increase on the previous year (Deloitte, 2009). The Italian football professional league, Serie A, is one of the most important football leagues in the world. It includes many well-known clubs participating in European football club tournaments such as AC Milan, Juventus, Internazionale, etc. Also, the Italian clubs have won the most trophies among the other European football clubs (UEFA, 2007). Many great players had played in Serie A, for example, Ronaldo Luis Nazário de Lima, Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, Zinedine Yazid Zidane, and many others. The development of modern football in Italy has been taking place for more than one hundred years. The Italian 2 national team won champions for 4 times in world cup series, only less one time to Brazil. Italian Football in an Era of Globalisation: Neo-Patrimony, New Localism and Decline Submitted by Mark Doidge to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology In October 2010 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. Signature: ………………………………………………………….. 1 Abstract Italy and Italian football have captured the imagination of writers and fans across the globe. The Italia ’90 world cup reaffirmed Italy’s standing as a world power in football. It also marked a turning point in global sport. At the end of the twentieth century, global sport underwent a period of profound transformation. In parallel to similar process taking place elsewhere in politics, economics and society, sport was entering a period of de-regulation and commodification, which impacted national leagues and local fans. Despite the intensification of transnational global networks resulting from de-regulation, individual nation states still hold significant power. Likewise, national leagues are still significant to football clubs despite the growth of global markets and transnational competitions. Yet these global processes of commodification and de-regulation have impacted fans in vastly different ways. This thesis provides analysis of Italian football in relation to the impact of the changing global political economy.
