YOTE NOTES – August 19, 2014 C of I Director of Athletic Communications – Mike Safford Jr. (208) 459-5681 [email protected] SPORTS RELEASE ATHLETIC NEWS: This Week’s Event Schedule COYOTE OPEN SET FOR SEPT. 26: The College of Idaho is pleased to announce the 30th annual Coyote Open golf tournament will be held Friday, September 26, at Falcon Crest Golf Course. 8/21 VB vs. Midland (at Biola) Noon PT One of the largest and longest-running golf tournaments in southwestern Idaho, the Coyote Open is the largest fundraiser conducted by the College of Idaho Athletic Association. Formed in VB at Biola 8 p.m. PT 1985, the Coyote Open annually features nearly 200 golfers and over 100 sponsors. Funds 8/22 WSOC vs. Carroll Noon raised from this event help offset the cost of athletic scholarships at the College. Due to VB vs. CSU -San Marcos (at Biola) 2 p.m. PT increased demand, this year's tournament will utilize all 27 championship holes at Falcon Crest Golf Course – allowing more teams to participate, while also speeding up the pace of play. Entry VB vs. Rocky Mountain (at Biola) 6 p.m. PT fees for the five-person scramble are $150 (rises to $200 after Sept. 15), a portion of which is 8/25 FB hosts Purple-Gold Scrimmage 6 p.m tax deductible. Sponsorship fees are $200 and are fully tax deductible (with other sponsorship packages also available). $200 sponsors will have their business or personal name featured on Upcoming Events our giant Coyote Open Sponsor billboard, which is on display at the tournament, and remains above the concession stand inside the J.A. For MSOC at Northwest Nazarene 6 p.m. further information on sponsorship opportunities or participation, contact Joe Hughes at [email protected] or (208) 459-5917, or register for the Coyote Open online 8/29 WSOC vs. Rocky Mountain Noon MSOC vs. Rocky Mountain 2:30 p.m. YOTES WIN CCC PRESIDENTS CUP: The C of I and Corban University shared the Cascade VB at Northwest Nazarene 7 p.m. Collegiate Conference Presidents' Cup honors for the 2013-14 academic year, announced in early July. The Presidents' Cup Academic Award recognizes outstanding overall academic 8/31 MSOC vs. Dakota Wesleyan (SLC) 11 a.m. performance. Each member institution is scored using two criteria (overall student athlete GPA 9/1 MSOC at Westminster 11 a.m. (men and women) and total number of student athletes receiving Academic All-Conference 9/6 FB at Pacific 1 p.m. PT honors. Both schools earned a total 38 points throughout the year. Corban led the way with the highest combined GPA at 3.28 followed closely by C of I at 3.21. The Yotes had seventy-two 9/13 XC at Roger Curran Invite 10 a.m. student athletes named Academic All-Conference while the Warriors named seventy student athletes to the list. To be considered for Academic All-Conference a student athlete must be of sophomore standing, been at the school for two consecutive semesters or three quarters and have a 3.2 or higher GPA. C OF I AMONG THE TOP NAIA SCHOLAR TEAMS: A total of 17 C of I intercollegiate teams were honored today as NAIA Scholar-Teams, announced by the NAIA sports information staff. For a team to be honored, each squad must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or better for the calendar year – based on all eligible varsity athletes in that specific sport. Of the 18 sports that the College sponsored within the NAIA in 2013-14, 17 were honored – including every women's sport – with C of I's women's tennis team recording the highest team GPA at 3.67. Coyote teams finished third overall nationally in the number of NAIA Scholar-Teams. In all, 1,290 teams throughout the NAIA were honored as Scholar-Teams, including 71 Cascade Conference squads. Oregon Tech had 14 teams represented; Eastern Oregon had 11; Corban and Northwest Christian each had 10, with Southern Oregon recording eight Scholar-Teams and Concordia one. Nationally, Olivet Nazarene had the most Scholar-Teams of any single institution with 19, while the Ashford (Iowa) men's golf team had the highest team GPA at 3.86. It will be the first game for 11/8 * EASTERN OREGON NOON the C of I since Nov. 11, 1977, when the Yotes defeated Pacific, 24-23. PROGRAM HISTORY: Coyote football began in 1905, with the C of I playing 68 seasons of 11/15 * Carroll Noon intercollegiate competition (including breaks for World War I, World War II and the 36-year period from 1978-2013). The C of I has an all-time record of 263-247-31, including Northwest 11/22 NAIA FCS (First Round) TBA Conference championships in 1926, 1927, 1948, 1952, 1953, 1954, and 1955. 11/29 NAIA FCS (Quarterfinal) TBA ABOUT THE COACH: Mike Moroski is in his second year as head coach of the C of I football program. Moroski came to the C of I after three decades at UC-Davis – both as a player and a 12/6 NAIA FCS (Semifinal) TBA coach. As offensive coordinator from 1993-2010, his schemes helped the Aggies to eight NCAA Division II postseason appearances, including three trips to the national quarterfinals and trips to 12/20 NAIA FCS (Final) TBA the national semifinals in 1996, 1997, 2000 and 2001. In 2000, his offense averaged 47 points per game, ranking second in Division II, while in 2001, his offense averaged 41 points and 511 HOME GAMES IN BOLD CAPS yards per game, helping Moroski earn Division II National Assistant Coach of the Year honors. With * Frontier Conference Game Moroski serving as offensive coordinator, UC-Davis posted an overall record of 148-80, including a 98-32 record as a Division II school. Moroski coached every offensive group during his tenure at UC-Davis – quarterbacks (1987-88), wide receivers (1992-97), offensive line (1998-2009), tight ends (2010-11), and running backs (2012), while serving as the junior varsity head coach from 1989-91. He helped the Aggies in their move from Division II to the Football Championship Subdivision in 2003, with UC-Davis transitioning to the Great West Conference and now playing in Frontier Conference Standings the Big Sky Conference.
