As Australia’s New World City and gateway to Asia, Brisbane is emerging as a thriving hub for business and innovation. The Draft Brisbane City Centre Master Plan 2013 has been developed to ensure we capitalise on this vast potential and seize today’s opportunities. Brisbane’s economy is predicted to double over the next 20 years, with demand for office, retail, residential and hotel space in the city centre expected to equate to around 50 new towers. Brisbane City Council’s master plan sets the vision for an open city – open for business, an open outdoor lifestyle and a vibrant heart that’s open for all to enjoy. A thriving city centre is vital to Brisbane’s continued prosperity and the quality of life we enjoy. 1 Airport OLS Penetrations by Existing and Planned Structures in the Sydney and Brisbane CBD It is crucial that the safety implications arising from the recent incidents involving a Qantas airbus A380 following take-off at Singapore airport on the 4th of November, 2010 and a B747 departing the same airport two days later are fully appreciated by governments at all levels. Although the problems were serious enough, they could have been a lot worse and could well have occurred at Brisbane or Sydney airports. To further illustrate what happened to the A380, the following interim list of 18 items damaged by the exploding engine was released to the media on the 11/11/2010. 1.Massive fuel leak in the left mid fuel tank (there are 11 tanks, including in the horizontal stabiliser on the tail); 2.Massive fuel leak in the left inner fuel tank; 3. A hole on the flap fairing big enough to climb through; 4 The aft gallery in the fuel system failed, preventing many fuel transfer functions; 5 Problem jettisoning fuel; 6 Massive hole in the upper wingsurface; 7 Partial failure of leading edge slats; 8 Partial failure of speed brakes/groundspoilers; 9 Shrapnel damage to the flaps; 10 Total loss of all hydraulic fluid in one of the jet'stwo systems; 11 Manual extension of landing gear; 12 Loss of one generator and associatedsystems; 13 Loss of brake anti-skid system; 14 No.1 engine could not be shut down in theusual way after landing because of major damage to systems; 15 No.1 engine could not beshut down using the fire switch, which meant fire extinguishers would not work on thatengine; 16 ECAM (electronic centralised aircraft monitor) warnings about the major fuelimbalance (because of fuel leaks on left side) could not be fixed with cross-feeding; 17 Fuelwas trapped in the trim tank (in the tail) creating a balance problem for landing; 18 Left wingforward spar penetrated by debris With so much damage to the aircraft, it’s clear that all on board were extremely lucky. -

Curating the City: unpacking contemporary art production and spatial politics in Brisbane i Abstract Contemporary art and exhibition-making is increasingly deployed in the urban development and marketing of cities for political-economic benefit, yet the examination of the aesthetic and cultural aspects of urban life is curiously limited. In probing the unique political conditions of Brisbane, Australia, this thesis contrasts two periods — 1985-1988 and 2012-2015 — in order to more fully understand the critical pressures impacting upon the production of contemporary aesthetic projects. While drawing upon Henri Lefebvre's right to the city, and insisting upon a right to imagine the city, this thesis concludes that a consistent re-articulation of critical pressure, which anticipates oppositional positions, is necessary. Acceptance Speech by Harry Triguboff AO It is a great hour to be inducted into the Property Council Hall of Fame. I am happy and proud for my family especially my wife Rhonda, my colleagues and all those who have worked to make Meriton such a wonderful place. To have achieved what we did would seem impossible in 1963 when we started because Australia was small, and our company was minute. Like many other entrepreneurs the important thing was to start correctly. The foundation had to be correct. If the beginning is wrong nothing will help. Also luck has a lot to do with it. But one must be around to get lucky breaks. Luck does not come to us. We have to be there working. Meriton is probably the most exciting company one could imagine. When we started the rent control was only lifted. Rent control meant that the owner could not raise rents. The result was that there was a terrible shortage and people had to pay key money to the owner to get accommodation. Of course that could not last forever, and rent control was lifted just before we started to build. The demand was enormous and there was no supply. Houses were expensive, because land was expensive. There was no great premium paid for views, or for suburbs. People did not have much and would only pay little, because they could only afford little. Hence the success of apartments. Our main customers were the farmers who were leaving their land and the poms who were brought here with assisted passage.
