Alasan Pemilihan Judul Jepang merupakan negara di asia yang memiliki dua unsur berbeda yang sangat menonjol. Kedua unsur ini dipadukan hingga membentuk suatu keunggulan, keunggulan yang menjadikan jepang dapat di katakan negara yang sangat maju. Kedua unsur ini adalah teknologi dan kebudayaan tradisional. Dengan keunggulannya ini, Jepang di akui sebagai bangsa yang dapat membangun negri nya sehingga dapat dikatan setara dengan negara – negara barat terutama Amerika. Jepang pada awal nya merupaka negara yang tertinggal disebatkan karena politik isolasi (menutup diri) yang berlangsung kurang lebih selama 200 tahun dibawah kepemimpinan keshougunan tokugawa. Politik isolasi ini dilatarbelakangi karena adanya ancaman dari bangsa – bangsa Eropa yang melakukan perdagangan di Jepang. Keberadaan bangsa Eropa dikhawatirkan akan menimbulkan kolonialisme dan imperialisme di Jepang. Jepang yang saat itu merupakan negara ‘kuno’ dan miskin akibat politik sakoku nya mulai tercerahkan dengan adanya Restorasi Meiji. Restorasi Meiji terjadi pada tahun 1866 hingga tahun 1869, tiga tahun yang mencakup akhir zaman Edo hingga awal zaman Meiji. Restorasi Meiji merupakan babak baru menuju modernisasi Jepang. Terlepas dari Restorasi Meiji sebagai awal modernisasi Jepang, masyarakat Jepang yang pada masa pemerintahan Keshougunan Tokugawa sangat menjujung tinggi nilai budaya, tidak langsung melupakan pola kehidupan tradisionalnya. 1 UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Bahkan kehidupan dan kebudayaan tradisional masyarakat jepang hingga saat ini masih berjalan sebagaimana mestinya. Masyarakat jepang dikenal sebagai masyarakat yang sangat menjunjung tinggi nilai tradisionalnya. Hal ini terlihat dari banyaknya masyarakat jepang yang masih melaksanakan ritual – ritual yang menitikberatkan terhadap perayaan baik itu di desa maupun perkotaan. Menurut Edwin Reischauer Jepang sebagai negara maju, kurang memperhatikan peran agama dalam kehidupannya. Hal ini juga dijelaskan oleh Ayip Rosidi yang mengatakan bahwa memang sukar mengukur keagamaan orang Jepang dengan menggunakan tolok ukur agama-agama samawi, yaitu agama yang mengakui kemahaesaan Tuhan. Berdasarkan dua pendapat tersebut dan berdasarkan pola hidup orang Jepang yang dikenal sebagai manusia ekonomi yang tekun, gigih, sangat menghargai waktu, ternyata ada sisi lain dalam kehidupan masyarakat Jepang yang menampakkan pola hidup religius, yaitu selalu mengawali segala kegiatan atau usaha yang baru dibuka dengan menyelenggarakan matsuri. Contohnya, orang Jepang akan menyelenggarakan matsuri, seperti melakukan Oharai (pengusiran roh-roh jahat) bagi mobil yang baru dibeli. Atau ketika sebuah perusahaan pesawat terbang yang baru membeli pesawat jet, maka merea akan menyelenggarakan matsuri sebelum mengoperasikan pesawat tersebut. Sebuah keluarga yang baru membeli rumah juga akan menyelenggarakan

    Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1993 20/2-3 The Myth of the Goddess of the Undersea World and the Tale of Empress Jingu’s Subjugation of Silla Akima Toshio In prewar Japan, the mythical tale of Empress Jingii’s 神功皇后 conquest of the Korean kingdoms comprised an important part of elementary school history education, and was utilized to justify Japan5s coloniza­ tion of Korea. After the war the same story came to be interpreted by some Japanese historians—most prominently Egami Namio— as proof or the exact opposite, namely, as evidence of a conquest of Japan by a people of nomadic origin who came from Korea. This theory, known as the horse-rider theory, has found more than a few enthusiastic sup­ porters amone Korean historians and the Japanese reading public, as well as some Western scholars. There are also several Japanese spe­ cialists in Japanese history and Japan-Korea relations who have been influenced by the theory, although most have not accepted the idea (Egami himself started as a specialist in the history of northeast Asia).1 * The first draft of this essay was written during my fellowship with the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, and was read in a seminar organized by the institu­ tion on 31 January 199丄. 1 am indebted to all researchers at the center who participated in the seminar for their many valuable suggestions. New York: Weatherhill, Inc., 1973) INTRODUCTION Both Kendo (the Way of the Sword) and Karate-do (the Way of Empty-hands) are deeply rooted in a rich tradition of Japanese warrior culture. To understand the tradition and the philosophies that our sports and arts represent, we must first visit the origin of budo, Japanese martial arts, and trace the path on which it was formed. 1. The Birth of Japan The land around the current Japanese islands was formed about 70 million years ago. According to archaeologists, humans lived on the land as early as 2.5 million years ago. During the last ice age (50,000 to 10,000 years ago), a massive movement of the earth separated the land from the Eurasian Continent, and the Japanese islands were formed. This geographical isolation from the continent provided the Japanese with protection and the opportunity to develop their own unique culture. From 10,000 B.C through 300 B.C., the prehistoric peoples of Japan followed a hunting and gathering way of life. Collective farming began around 300 B.C., triggering the development of irrigation systems and iron-edged tools which increased harvests, in turn stimulating a massive population explosion. As social hierarchies and political structures developed, competition and warfare between villages intensified. Bronze and iron weapons were initially obtained from the continent, but soon the Japanese were making their own weapons such as swords, pikes, and spears.

    Volume 13, No 1, Spring 2018 ISSN 1932-1066 Transcendence and Immanence, West and East A Case Study of Japanese Divinity Tomoko Iwasawa Reitaku University in Chiba, Japan [email protected] Abstract: This essay discusses the psychosomatic aspect of Japanese religiosity by first providing an etymological analysis of kami (the Japanese notion of divinity) and then, by analyzing how kami is symbolized in a contemporary Japanese Shinto festival, The Great Pillar Festival of the Suwa Shrine. The study shows that the Japanese kami at no point refers to a transcendent, extra-cosmic, eternal God of Logos, but rather refers to an intra-cosmic divine essence that gives constant dynamism to all beings in the world, exerting itself only by way of residing in materiality. As such, the Japanese notion of divinity is inescapably a combination of the material and the spiritual, being surprisingly indifferent to the Western philosophical tradition of the mind-body dualism. By means of evaluating from a Jaspersian perspective this kind of Japanese divinity that is in no regard based on the concept of Transcendence, the essay explores the question whether this absence signifies an earlier stage of consciousness or whether there is a different way to interpret this disparity between Transcendence and Immanence, West and East.
