Excellency,

I would like to extend my warmest thanks to you for welcoming me and my delegation during my visit to the Union of Myanmar from 29 April to 1 May 2012. My visit has taken place at a momentous time in your country's history. I was honoured to meet again with you and to exchange views on the cooperation between your Government and the United Nations in a wide range of areas in support of the political and economic reforms being undertaken under your leadership.

I wish to thank you and Daw Khin Khin Win for graciously hosting a State banquet in honour of Mrs. Ban and myself, as well as for the beautiful gift you gave me.

I was pleased to have the opportunity to meet with His Excellency Vice-President Sai Mauk Kham and with members of your Cabinet, notably Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin as well as Ministers U , U Soe Thein, U Khin Yi and others who I understand are most closely involved in the national reconciliation process.

I am most grateful to your Government for making arrangements to ensure the success of my visit, including through the provision of Government helicopters for my visit to Shan State.

My visit has convinced me that, under your leadership, Myanmar will continue its reform efforts and strive towards greater democratization, national reconciliation and prosperity for all of its peoples. I am encouraged at the prospect of Myanmar regaining its rightful place regionally and internationally, and strengthened in my commitment to further mobilize the support of the United Nations and the international community to help enable the current process to result in a successful transition for Myanmar.

I was honoured to meet you during my visit to the Union of Myanmar from 29 April to 1 May 2012 at a momentous time in your country's history. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to exchange views with you and to have had an extensive visit, including to Shan State. Let me also thank you for the beautiful gift you gave me.

I wish to thank you in particular for joining me in witnessing the signing ceremony of the exchange of letters between your Government and the United Nations in connection with the census planned iri 2014 in Myanmar.

Our joint participation in this event exemplifies the close cooperation between your Government and the United Nations in support ofthe reforms undertaken by your Government under the leadership of President Thein Sein.

I was honoured to meet you and to exchange views on the support that the United Nations can continue to provide to help advance the cause of peace, democracy and respect for human rights in your country.

Allow me to reiterate my profound admiration for your contribution to world peace and for your unwavering commitment to democracy, reconciliation and the rule oflaw in your country. To the United Nations and the international community, you are a symbol of hope for progress all around the world.

I wish to congratulate you once again on your election as a Member of Parliament and for the leadership you have already demonstrated for the greater cause of your people and country. I am convinced that you will continue to play a constructive and active role as a Parliamentarian for the betterment and well-being of your people.

As Secretary-General, I pledge that the United Nations will continue to stand by your people at every step and in any way we can. Excellency,

I wish to thank you for the reception you extended to me and my delegation during my visit to Shan State on 30 April2012. I was pleased to meet with you and am thankful for the kind gift you gave me.

I am grateful for all the arrangements made by your authorities to facilitate my travel and ensure the success of my visit from Heho to KyaukKa Char. The presentation I received on-site was very informative and I was touched by the warm welcome of the people ofKyauk Ka Char.

My visit to your State allowed me to witness first-hand the importance of close cooperation between the United Nations and the Myanri:lar central and local authorities. I was particularly encouraged by the successful work between the authorities of Shan State and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the World Food Programme in the area of alternative livelihoods and drug elimination.

Please be assured that I have concluded my visit strengthened in my commitment to further mobilize the support of the United Nations and the international community to help enable the efforts of Myanmar at all levels to meet its goals in the area of drug eradication and other priorities.
