PARENT HANDBOOK2021

DEAR AGGIE PARENT

WELCOME TO , HOME OF THE AGGIES.

We hope the next few years are full of learning and growth for your student, and that you feel welcomed as a member of the Aggie family. As the parent of an Aggie, I have seen firsthand the personal growth that occurs as students participate in the learning, discovery, and engagement available at this world- class university.

Students regularly cite parents among the greatest influences in their lives. We recognize you are a tremendous partner in helping your student reach his or her goals. We thank you for your influence and support as your student experiences both the successes and challenges that will shape his or her experience as a learner. Whether you are a returning parent, a first-time parent, or alumni, this handbook will provide you with resources and information to help support your student's transition to college.

While the past year was challenging, we are anticipating fall semester back in the classroom and looking forward to offering students a more traditional Aggie experience. Our campus community has shown enormous resilience during the pandemic, and we are excited to come together again on campus. To stay up-to-date on the university’s plans, please visit usu.edu/parents, subscribe to the Aggie Parent and Family Podcast, and join the Parent and Family Network for regular newsletter communications.

Welcome to Utah State, and welcome to the Aggie family.

Sincerely,

Noelle E. Cockett, President

PARENT HANDBOOK 2021 | 17 FERPA usu.edu/registrar/ferpa-info

WHAT IS FERPA The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a U.S. federal law that protects the privacy of student educational records. FERPA protects your student’s rights by ensuring we don’t release any information to anyone without their consent; that includes you, as parents. In order for you to have access to this information, your student will need to go to myid.usu.edu, and assign you as a delegate. To find out more about FERPA, visit usu.edu/registrar/ferpa-info.

WHAT IS A DELEGATE A delegate is especially useful for, but not limited to, students who may be taking a leave of absence from the university for church or military service. If your student plans to take a leave of absence, a delegate can assist them in making a smooth transition back to USU by acting on their behalf.

THE ADDING, CHANGING, OR REMOVING OF A SECURITY PHRASE AND/ OR DELEGATES IS THE SOLE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT.

WHAT CAN A DELEGATE DO A delegate may act on a students behalf at USU, which means a delegate may: * Have full access to the student's information, * Change or update the student's information, including their password, * Access the student's information in Banner (Access), including their grades and finances, and add or drop classes on the student's behalf.

A few things you may want to know about delegates... * The student will need to create a security phrase in order to create a delegate. * Students should designate only those they can trust as their delegate(s) and/or entrust those individuals with their security phrase.

Utah State University works to educate students about ways to prevent sexual misconduct, and to inform students about reporting procedures and available resources.

All incoming and transfer students at the Logan, Eastern, and Blanding campuses are required to go through an in-person interactive, peer-led training about consent, healthy relationships, sexual violence, and ways to create a safer campus. Incoming and transfer students at Statewide Campuses, even online- only students, are required to complete an online course about the same topics. PARENT HANDBOOK 2021 | 51 COVID-19 covid19.usu.edu

Utah State University is working hard to make this fall a more traditional Aggie experience for incoming and current students. With COVID-19 case numbers currently trending down in Utah and vaccinations increasing rapidly, Utah State University announced plans to expand the number of in-person classes and campus activities in 2021.

The university will continue to implement guidance from federal, state and local health officials as COVID-19 will likely still circulate. USU does not require students to be vaccinated, but they are highly encouraged to do so in order to protect community members and to allow students to return to social activities that help define the Aggie experience.
