2016 ANNUAL REPORT he year 2016 was historic for South Dakota’s Trail of Governors as the foundation reached the half-way point with 15 bronze statues – Thalf of our former governors’ images. We celebrated this milepost of the journey on this Trail since beginning six years ago with zero dollars and a handful of volunteers. Progress continues to rely on volunteers from board members to underwriters, artists to historians, advisors to donors. Not only does this Trail celebrate South Dakota’s leaders, it also cele- brates the talent and creativity of our artists, it enhances the aesthetics of our capital city, and it showcases the resolve of our citizens. Trail supporters include a variety of South Dakotans and folks from all over the United States. We have business owners, governor family members, governor staff members, art enthusiasts, history buffs, tour- ism promoters, and school teachers. In 2016, we honored Govs. Green, Boe and Rounds. Each of these leaders stood proudly on behalf of South Dakota during tough times and prosperous times. They protected us. They promoted us. These bronze tributes are one way South Dakotans show respect to them Governor Warren E. Green – 13th Governor of South Dakota M. Michael Rounds - 31st Governor of South Dakota for their dedication as our leaders. 2016 Trail of Governors Annual Report Gov. Green – 13th, 1931-1933 Despite his surname, we think of Warren E. Green as our Dirty Thirties Governor. He had the dubious honor of leading South Dakota during the worst of the drought years. Not only would nothing much grow and grasshoppers ate what little green did surface, but the dust bowl created a severe financial crisis. Green’s tenacity and financial acumen helped South Dakota avoid further disaster during these tough, tough times. Green’s statue by Lee Leuning and Sherri Treeby near the Capitol tells the story as you feel the wind blowing mightily while hoppers alight on his slender frame. Green stands with hat in hand, bracing himself against the elements. Green’s donors were Leroy and Charlene Foster, Mansour and Ruth Karim, and Green’s grandchildren and great grandchildren. Warren E. Green - 13th Governor of South Dakota A vision to create a lasting legacy of South Dakota’s governors. 2016 Trail of Governors Annual Report Gov. Boe – 23rd, 1965-1969 Nils A. Boe dealt with many changing policies as governor, both at the federal and state levels. It was a time of change and he was known as a leader of conviction and courage. As U.S. Senator Karl Mundt once said of him, “we have a governor with some guts.” Boe was South Dakota’s only bachelor governor and having four sisters, he would occasionally ask one of his sisters to serve as his hostess. He was very fond of his loyal beagle often found at his feet, Beagle Boe. Boe’s statue by John Lopez and James Michael Maher near BankWest’s headquarters in downtown Pierre features the famous first dog’s likeness. The funds for Boe’s statue were donated by BankWest and Charles Burke II. Nils A. Boe - 23rd Governor of South Dakota A vision to create a lasting legacy of South Dakota’s governors. 2016 Trail of Governors Annual Report Gov. Rounds – 31st, 2003-2011 M. Michael Rounds was Pierre’s only hometown boy to serve as governor. In fact, he grew up in a house not far from where his statue stands near the Governor’s Mansion. When not making decisions at the Capitol or attending meetings, Rounds would often be walking corn and milo fields, hunting ring neck pheasants like other avid South Dakota hunters. He not only enjoyed the sport, he promoted it to lure visitors to the state. Rounds’ bronze image by James Michael Maher features his beloved dog Baby at his side, with his hunting gun in hand, ready to take on another field and bring home dinner. Rounds’ statue was funded by his friends and family, the families of Steve and Trace Beck, Beck Motor Company, and Fischer Rounds and Associates. M.
