Donald L. Korb Chief Counsel, Internal Revenue Service Speech at Baseball Hall of Fame to Tax Section of New York State Bar Association in Cooperstown, New York Saturday, July 15, 2006 Thanks to Kim Blanchard for thinking of me and inviting me to speak here this evening. And thanks for the great reports you and your colleagues prepare for us. My wife Pat came with me to Cooperstown for the weekend. She just joined me in Washington, D.C. after two years of my commuting back and forth to our home to Cleveland. When I told her that we were going to celebrate her arrival in Washington by going to the Baseball Hall of Fame, and not only that, but we were going there to attend a meeting of tax lawyers, her response was “After all of these years” – and we have been married for 34 years – “you still really know how to win a girl’s heart.” When I was a young boy playing pick-up baseball on the sandlots back in Cleveland, I would often daydream – as I was standing out there in right field – about being enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame here in Cooperstown. And I would also fantasize about what I would say during my acceptance speech on that momentous – albeit hypothetical – occasion. Well since I am now 58 years old and still can’t hit a curve ball, I guess my talk to you tonight is about as close as I will ever get to fulfilling that particular dream. I was walking around the museum earlier this afternoon and I came across an exhibit that I suspect is little noticed by the average baseball fan who visits here.

“The Royals of Sir Cedric” by Steve Treder of The Hardball Times December 21, 2004 At its inception, the most successful expansion franchise in pre-free agency baseball history didn’t impress many observers. • Mickey Owen Baseball School Along Old Route 66 in Miller, About 25 Miles West of Springfield
July 31, 2005----- MILLER, Mo. -- Mickey Owen was the Brooklyn Dodgers catcher known for his passed ball in the 1941 World Series that led the New York Yankees to a championship. But later in life, the popular All-Star never passed on giving an assist to a youngster. Owen had a 13-year major-league career, including a 1949-51 stint with the Cubs. He retired to his central Missouri roots in 1954. In 1959, Owen founded the Mickey Owen Baseball School along old Route 66 in Miller, about 25 miles west of Springfield. Notable pupils include Yankees coach Joe Girardi, actor Charlie Sheen and former Birmingham Baron Michael Jordan, who was awarded a summer scholarship to the school when he was 13. Owen died earlier this month from complications of Alzheimer's disease. The native of Nixa, Mo., was 89. But his school is still going as if it were the summer of '59. A tapestry of six baseball diamonds, batting cages and forest green cabins are set off the highway in a lush grove of tall oak trees. The 15 cabins are homes for summer players, ages 8-19. Players come from the Midwest, Japan, Puerto Rico and South Africa. They live on the 77-acre grounds for one or two weeks. Each cabin is named after a vintage major-league team. Eight to 10 players are assigned to a cabin. There is no "Devil Rays" cabin. During the summer of 1976, Jordan stayed in the "White Sox" cabin. The cabins are not air conditioned. This is baseball unplugged.

Through my research I have found that both entities follow a very similar timeline with highs and lows coming around the same time in the same province; although, I have not found any direct linkage between the two. My analysis begins around 1837 and continues through present day, and by analyzing the histories of each movement demonstrates clearly that both movements followed a unique and similar timeline.

  • Weekly Notes 082417
MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES THURSDAY, AUGUST 24, 2017 NATIONAL TREASURE With a victory on Sunday at San Diego, Washington Nationals starting pitcher Gio Gonzalez improved to 12-5 on the season with a 2.39 ERA. The 31-year-old left-hander has won each of his last four starts, permitting just one earned run over 27.2 innings pitched (0.33 ERA). According to Elias, the only other pitchers in Expos/Nationals history to post an ERA below 0.50 over four straight starts within one season (all wins), are Charlie Lea (0.28 in 1981), Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez (0.30 in 1997) and Javier Vazquez (0.28 in 2001). With his next start, Gio will attempt to become the fourth pitcher in Montreal/Washington franchise history to pick up a victory while tossing at least 6.0 innings and allowing one earned run or less in fi ve consecutive starts, and just the second to do so in a single season. Jordan Zimmermann accomplished the feat in six consecutive starts in 2012, while Martinez did so in six straight starts across the 1996-97 seasons. Gonzalez’ teammate Joe Ross compiled a streak of fi ve such starts between 2015-16. The two-time All-Star has now pitched into the sixth inning in 19 consecutive starts, and he has lasted at least 5.0 innings in 25 straight outings. Steve Rogers holds the all-time franchise mark of 62 straight starts of at least 5.0 innings pitched from May 22, 1977 - April 15, 1979.
