NASA chief big on climate NASA shares sounds of the Mars chopper CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., May 8, (AP): First came the amaz- ing pictures, then the video. Now NASA is sharing sounds of its little helicopter humming through the thin Martian air. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California released this fi rst-ever audio Friday, just before Ingenuity made its fi fth test fl ight, a short one-way trip to a new airfi eld. During the fourth fl ight a week earlier, the low hum from the helicopter blades spinning at more than 2,500 revolutions per minute is barely audible. It almost sounds like a low-pitched, faraway mosquito or other fl ying insect. That’s because the 4-pound (1.8-kilogram) helicopter was more than 260 feet (80 meters) from the microphone on the Perseverance rover. The rumbling wind gusts also obscured the chopper’s sound. Scientists isolated the sound of the whirring blades and magnifi ed it, making it easier to hear. Ingenuity - the fi rst powered aircraft to fl y at another planet - arrived at Mars on Feb. 18, clinging to Perseverance’s belly. Its fi rst fl ight was April 19; NASA named the takeoff and landing area Wright Brothers Field in honor of Wilbur and Orrville, who made the world’s fi rst airplane fl ights in 1903. A stamp-size piece of wing fabric from the original Wright Flyer is aboard In- genuity. The $85 million tech demo was sup- Nelson posed to end a few days ago, but NASA extended the mission by at least a month to get more fl ying time. For Friday afternoon’s 108-second test fl ight, the helicopter Kuala Lumpur and a few other cities will be placed under the Movement Control Order (MCO) as the number of COVID-19 cases and clusters continue to rise. (AP) traveled southward in the same direction the rover is heading. Once over its new airfi eld, the chopper soared to twice its pre- vious altitude - 33 feet (10 meters) - took pictures, then landed. The two airfi elds are 423 feet (129 meters) apart. With the helicopter’s fi rst phase complete, the rover can Coronavirus now start hunting for rocks that might contain signs of past microscopic life. Core samples will be collected for eventual return to Earth. Diversifying Countries wrestle with new COVID surges Meanwhile, NASA’s new administrator is big on tackling climate and diversifying the agency’s workforce, but hedging on whether the US can put astronauts on the moon by 2024. Hungry for adaptations TV’s growth a boon for ‘diverse voices’

LOS ANGELES, May 8, (AP): Growing up an avid reader, Kwana Jackson knew where to look for ro- mance novels with Black characters: Segregated in the “African American interest” section where only deter- mined shoppers would fi nd them. When Jackson became a published author she saw other ways in which writers of color were obscured, potentially affecting both book sales and the odds their work would catch the entertainment industry’s atten- tion. “That’s why, after 10 novels, I was surprised and thrilled when my agent came to me and said, ‘We’ve had interest in ‘Real Men Knit,’” Jackson said of her 2020 novel about four broth- ers in New York’s Harlem, optioned by a production com- pany for a potential TV series. What she calls a dream come true is a pragmatic re- fl ection of the unprecedented number of TV outlets in need of shows and growing pressure for inclusive fare - a one-two punch creating opportunities for overlooked writers and ig- Jackson nored perspectives. “There’s a huge appetite for diverse voices and for almost forgotten voices,” said Steve Fisher, head of intellectual property and a part- ner at the APA talent agency.
