Diana Davies Photograph Collection Finding Aid Collection summary Prepared by Stephanie Smith, Joyce Capper, Jillian Foley, and Meaghan McCarthy 2004-2005. Creator: Diana Davies Title: The Diana Davies Photograph Collection Extent: 8 binders containing contact sheets, slides, and prints; 7 boxes (8.5”x10.75”x2.5”) of 35 mm negatives; 2 binders of 35 mm and 120 format negatives; and 1 box of 11 oversize prints. Abstract: Original photographs, negatives, and color slides taken by Diana Davies. Date span: 1963-present. Bulk dates: Newport Folk Festival, 1963-1969, 1987, 1992; Philadelphia Folk Festival, 1967-1968, 1987. Provenance The Smithsonian Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections acquired portions of the Diana Davies Photograph Collection in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Ms. Davies photographed for the Festival of American Folklife. More materials came to the Archives circa 1989 or 1990. Archivist Stephanie Smith visited her in 1998 and 2004, and brought back additional materials which Ms. Davies wanted to donate to the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives. In a letter dated 12 March 2002, Ms. Davies gave full discretion to the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage to grant permission for both internal and external use of her photographs, with the proviso that her work be credited “photo by Diana Davies.” Restrictions Permission for the duplication or publication of items in the Diana Davies Photograph Collection must be obtained from the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections. Consult the archivists for further information. Scope and Content Note The Davies photographs already held by the Rinzler Archives have been supplemented by two more recent donations (1998 and 2004) of additional photographs (contact sheets, prints, and slides) of the Newport Folk Festival, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the Poor People's March on Washington, the Civil Rights Movement, the Georgia Sea Islands, and miscellaneous personalities of the American folk revival. -

FRED NEIL LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. Fred Neil (16 th March 1936 –7th July 2001) was one of the most compelling folk singer-songwriters in the 1960s and early 1970s. His marvellously deep, rich and impossibly low baritone enchanted everyone who has ever heard a Fred Neil song - and continues to do so. Surely one of the most beautiful voices in music. Bob Dylan said, “Fred had a strong, powerful voice, almost a bass voice, and a powerful sense of rhythm. He used to play mostly the type of songs that Josh White might sing. I used to sing and play harmonica for him, and then once in a while get to sing a song.” Yet as performer success eluded Fred, mainly because it was the last thing he pursued. A reluctance to tour didn’t help much either (a trait he shared with Bobby Charles and Harry Nilsson). According to his producer, Nik Venet, Fred was “probably the most famous and financially successful ‘cult artist’ in the history of the world...and could have been even bigger if he’d wanted to be....but he just didn’t!” Fred Neil showed up unexpectedly and was gone before you knew it. A loner and somewhat of a recluse, he was exceedingly hard to get to know and thus remained an enigma to most. John Sebastian, who played on his two Elektra albums, describes his background as “sketchy”. He is best known to the world through other people’s recordings of his material, such as ‘Everybody’s Talkin’’, made famous by Harry Nilsson as the theme to the movie Midnight Cowboy (and earned a Grammy) and ‘Other Side of This Life’, recorded by several but most notably by Jefferson Airplane. -

Pastora Pavon, the Last of the Great Flamenco Singers A story by Cynthia Gooding Cynthia Gooding was one of the most popular and influential folksingers of the 1950s, a statuesque woman with a gorgeous voice and a unique repertoire of songs from many parts of the world. She was one of Elektra Records’ defining stars, along with Josh White, her sometime duet partner Theo Bikel, Oscar Brand, Bob Gibson, and Ed McCurdy. By the 1960s, the music business was changing. The Kingston Trio had reached the top of the pop charts and spawned hundreds of collegiate folk groups, most of them barely competent on their instruments and recycling the same tiny repertoire of songs. Gooding had no interest in competing with this flock of commercially-oriented amateurs, so turned her interests in other directions. Her daughter Leyla recalls: “In 1962, my mother wanted to get out of the business. I guess the only way she thought she could do that was to move far away, so we moved to Seville, Spain. She said she wanted to write a biography of a famous singer, Pastora Pavon, known as La Niña de los Peines. When she finally tracked down La Niña, it turned out that La Niña didn’t want her biography written. Mom spent the next two years doing what she loved: collecting music, this time flamenco. She considered it the blues of Spain, sung by gypsies, who were outcasts at the time.” Gooding returned to the U.S., hosted a popular folk music radio show in New York, and continued to be a presence on the folk scene. -

Tradition label Discography by David Edwards, Mike Callahan & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Tradition Label Discography The Tradition Label was established in New York City in 1956 by Pat Clancy (of the Clancy Brothers) and Diane Hamilton. The label recorded folk and blues music. The label was independent and active from 1956 until about 1961. Kenny Goldstein was the producer for the label during the early years. During 1960 and 1961, Charlie Rothschild took over the business side of the company. Clancy sold the company to Bernard Solomon at Everest Records in 1966. Everest started issuing albums on the label in 1967 and continued until 1974 using recordings from the original Tradition label and Vee Jay/Horizon.
