NPSForm 10-900a 0MB No. 1024-0018 (Rev. 8/86) United States Department of the Interior National Park Service National Register of Historic Places Continuation Sheet Denver Tramway Powerhouse Section number _7_ Page J_ Denver, Colorado DESCRIPTION The Denver Tramway Powerhouse is a large industrial structure located along the South Platte River adjacent to downtown Denver, Colorado. 1 The building sits at the convergence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River. This location was advantageous for the production of electric power due to nearby rail lines, which provided access to coal for fuel, and the adjacent river, which provided cooling water and a means of discarding waste. The site was also central to other Tramway system facilities. The orientation of the powerhouse along a northwest-southeast axis matches the diagonal compass orientation of the city's downtown street grid. The original 1901-04 building was followed by an addition in 1911 that extended the building to the northwest and increased its square footage by half. 2 A second addition in 1924 served as the battery house. The one-story over basement powerhouse is constructed of concrete foundations, red brick walls, and a steel roof, and is of generally rectangular plan, measuring approximately 108 feet by 440 feet by 55 feet high above grade. The battery house addition is an all-concrete two-story structure located in the north corner measuring approximately 24 feet by 145 feet by 34 feet above grade. The foundations

    2019 FACT SHEETS Regional Transportation District On the Cover: The first on-road deployment of an autonomous vehicle (AV) made its debut as RTD’s Route 61AV at the end of January 2019. The self- driving EasyMile shuttle is 100 percent electric and will connect passengers from the 61st & Pena Station along the University of Colorado A Line to the Panasonic and EasyMile offices. The shuttle can carry up to 12 passengers and will run Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., making a loop to four stops every 15 minutes at an average speed of 12 – 15 miles per hour. The goal of the project is to determine whether the autonomous vehicle could serve as a possible future first and last mile solution for transit riders. Route 61AV is a pilot project that was approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the newly formed Colorado Autonomous Vehicle Task Force.     3.12 HISTORIC AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL PRESERVATION Legislation at the state and federal levels requires that governmental agencies assess the impacts of proposed projects on historic and archaeological resources before undertaking a project. The federal legislation that protects historic and archaeological resources includes Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (NHPA as amended). Section 106 of the NHPA requires that federal agencies or other agencies that use federal funds consider the effects of their actions on historic properties. An historic property is defined as any prehistoric or historic site, district, structure, building, object or archaeological resource included on or eligible for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The Section 106 process includes steps to: 1) identify and evaluate historic properties, 2) assess the impacts of an undertaking on the historic properties, and 3) consult with appropriate agencies for measures to avoid, minimize, or mitigate any adverse effects. The process for complying with the state legislation is similar. This section addresses the requirements of Section 106 of the NHPA and the Colorado statutes protecting historic resources. Four main criteria are used to determine if a property is eligible for inclusion on the NRHP: Criterion A: The property is associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad pattern of our history. Criterion B: The property is associated with the lives of persons significant in our past. Criterion C: The property embodies the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction; or represents the work of a master; or possesses high artistic values; or represents a significant and distinguishable entity whose components may lack individual distinction.

    VIRTUAL FRIELD TRIPS – DENVER’S HISTORIC UPTOWN DISTRICT Fire Station #1 In 1909, the city of Denver built Fire Station No. 1 to help protect the business district. The first floor was used for horse stalls and to park fire wagons. Later, the stalls and wagons were removed to make room for modern‐day fire trucks. The second floor included living, sleeping and eating areas for the firemen. This station served the city for over 60 years. Fire Station #1 Photo: N/A More About This Topic When the city built Fire Station No. 1, it hired an architect to design an attractive building. This station, designed by Glen W. Huntington, includes several elements of the classical style of architecture. (Buildings in the classical style remind one of temples constructed by the ancient Greeks.) The classical elements in this fire station include the columns that frame the windows on the second floor. The long cornice above the columns also gives the building a classical look. The city preserved this building after it was no longer needed as a fire station by turning it into a museum. In 1974, the fire fighters moved to a new building. Four years later, the old Fire Station No. 1 building became the Denver Firefighters' Museum. Visitors to the museum can see early fire trucks and fire‐ fighting equipment on display.
