“The Historical Impact and Current Challenges of Christian Ministry
ABSTRACT The purpose of this research is to assess and address issues of contextualization and reconciliation as they pertain to Christianization and cultural preservation within the three Nanticoke-Lenape American Indian tribal communities remaining in the states of New Jersey and Delaware in the United States. The study seeks to provide insight into the challenges for ministry within the socio-cultural and political context of the tribal communities, particularly in regard to meaningful healing and reconciliation over the lingering effects of colonization, in a manner that promotes integral, holistic, contextualized Christian ministry. To achieve this, the study investigates the historical backdrop of the tribal communities, including European contact, colonization, missions, assimilation and cultural survival. Past and present tribal lifeways, beliefs, and practices are evaluated through documented historical sources and contemporary accounts. The research highlights the histories and current ministries of the principal historic tribal congregations, and their role in the spiritual, cultural, and political survival of the tribes. It also assesses possible approaches for effective, mission oriented, compassionate engagement as a matter of faithful contextualization and social justice. It should be noted that within this work the terms “American Indian,” “Native American,” “Indigenous American,” “Aboriginal American,” and “First Nations People” are all used to describe the indigenous people of America. These terms should not be confused with the term “Indian American,” which describes an American citizen whose ancestors can be traced to the nation of India on the continent of Asia. HISTORIC PRESERVATION ELEMENT Sussex Co. Comprehensive Plan Update – Historic Preservation Element – June 2008 HISTORIC PRESERVATION ELEMENT Brief History of Sussex County Native Americans first inhabited Delaware sometime around 14,000 years ago. They lived and hunted along the many tributaries and bays in the county. In 1631, the Dutch established a trading post in present-day Lewes. For most of the eighteenth century, Sussex County remained heavily wooded. In 1728, Reverend William Beckett reported that there were 1,750 inhabitants in the county. Delaware became the first state to ratify the U. S. Constitution in 1787. In 1791, the Sussex County legislature voted to move the county seat from Lewes to Georgetown. The Delaware Railroad reached Seaford in 1856, and Delmar by 1859. The Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia Railroad ran from Harrington to Milford, to Georgetown in 1869. A third line, the Junction and Breakwater Railroad, was constructed between 1859 and 1868 to Lewes; a spur line eventually connected Rehoboth in 1878. These railroads stimulated changes in agriculture and industry, and the growth of new towns. Soon improved transportation made Sussex County’s coastal towns more accessible to the people from Philadelphia, Baltimore and elsewhere. From the 1890's through the Golden Age of the 1920's, Americans discovered the beach. From that time on, steamboats regularly carried travelers to Sussex County’s shores. Sussex County has always been the most important agricultural region in Delaware. In 1880, corn was the dominant cash crop. In 1900, Sussex was the leading strawberry producer in the nation. By the early 1960s, orchard crops had been supplanted by more lucrative agricultural products. -

Sullivan, M.A.A. - Co-Principal Investigator Erve Chambers, Ph.D. - Principal Investigator Ennis Barbery, M.A.A. - Research Assistant Prepared under cooperative agreement with The University of Maryland College Park, MD and The National Park Service Chesapeake Bay Annapolis, MD EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Nanticoke River watershed indigenous cultural landscape study area is home to well over 100 sites, landscapes, and waterways meaningful to the history and present-day lives of the Nanticoke people. This report provides background and evidence for the inclusion of many of these locations within a high-probability indigenous cultural landscape boundary—a focus area provided to the National Park Service Chesapeake Bay and the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail Advisory Council for the purposes of future conservation and interpretation as an indigenous cultural landscape, and to satisfy the Identification and Mapping portion of the Chesapeake Watershed Cooperative Ecosystems Studies Unit Cooperative Agreement between the National Park Service and the University of Maryland, College Park. Herein we define indigenous cultural landscapes as areas that reflect “the contexts of the American Indian peoples in the Nanticoke River area and their interaction with the landscape.” The identification of indigenous cultural landscapes “ includes both cultural and natural resources and the wildlife therein associated with historic lifestyle and settlement patterns and exhibiting the cultural or esthetic values of American Indian peoples,” which fall under the purview of the National Park Service and its partner organizations for the purposes of conservation and development of recreation and interpretation (National Park Service 2010:4.22). -

INTRODUCTION 1.1 THE SUSSEX COUNTY LANDSCAPE Sussex County is the southernmost county in Delaware and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Kent County, Delaware, to the north, and Caroline, Dorchester, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties, Maryland, to the west and south (Figure 1.1-1). The County is within a 100- mile drive of Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. Sussex County has the largest land area of Delaware’s three counties, spanning 938 square miles of land area, and has long been the State’s leading agricultural producer. Sussex County’s diverse landscape also encompasses small towns and growing population centers. -
