Introduction The copperplate inscriptions of the Maitraka period When archaeological material was available only to a contain references to serveral temples of Goddesses such as small extent, the early scholars in Gujarat tried to trace Pandura and Kottammahika at Trisangamaka, the earliest antiquity of the prevalence of Shakti-worship in Gujarat mainly references belonging to the reign of King Dronsinha (circa 500 based on the traditional accounts. Many of them were given in to 520 A.D.). the purans or puran-khandas of late origin, while some others were transmited orally through generations. Thus, epographic references allude to the prevalence, of th goddess-temples in Gujarat since 6 cent.A.D. The prevalence of shakti-worship in Gujarat probably received an impetus from Devi-mahatmya given in The evidence of sculptural remains in the form of Markandeya Puran. The origin of the worship of the Goddeess goddesses leads us to trace the antiquity of Shakti worship in in Gujarat can be traced to the primitive tribe of the Bhils and Gujarat still earlier. Excavations at Amerli have yielded two nd that it received further impetus through the Nagars and Jadeja icons of goddesses. The earlier one dated to 2 cent.A.D., is a Rajputs. However, he could not trace any evidence for its fragmentary stone-bust of a goddess holdinga spear in her prevalence in Gujarat before 1000 A.D. -

Arrington Utilizing a feminist hermeneutical inquiry, my research through three Celtic goddesses—Aine, Grian, and Brigit—shows that the sun was revered as feminine in Celtic tradition. Additionally, I argue that through the introduction and assimilation of Christianity into the British Isles, the Virgin Mary assumed the same characteristics as the earlier Celtic solar deities. The lands generally referred to as Celtic lands include Cornwall in Britain, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and Brittany in France; however, I will be limiting my research to the British Isles. I am examining these three goddesses in particular, in relation to their status as solar deities, using the etymologies of their names to link them to the sun and its manifestation on earth: fire. Given that they share the same attributes, I illustrate how solar goddesses can be equated with goddesses of sovereignty. Furthermore, I examine the figure of St. -

A Definition of olklorF e: A Personal Narrative Abstract My definition of folklore as "artistic communication in small groups" was forged in the context of folklore studies of the 1960s, in the discontent with the definitions that were current at the time, and under the influence of anthropology, linguistics - particularly 'the ethnography of speaking' - and Russian formalism. My field esearr ch among the Edo people of Nigeria had a formative impact upon my conception of folklore, when I observed their storytellers, singers, dancers and diviners in performance. Oral Tradition, 27/2 (2012): 291-318 Sensing “Place”: Performance, Oral Tradition, and Improvization in the Hidden Temples of Mountain Altai Carole Pegg and Elizaveta Yamaeva Dedicated to Arzhan Mikhailovich Közörökov (1978-2012) 1. Introduction: Altai’s Ear The snow-capped Altai Mountain range runs from southern Siberia in the Russian Federation, southwards through West Mongolia, eastern Kazakhstan, and the Xinjiang autonomous region of Northwest China, before finally coming to rest in Southwest Mongolia. This essay is based on fieldwork undertaken in 2010 in that part of the Altai Mountains that in 1990 became the Republic of Altai, a unit of the Russian Federation.1 The Altaians, known previously as Kalmyks and Oirots, engage in a complex of spiritual beliefs and practices known locally as Ak Jang (“White Way”)2 and in academic literature as Burkhanism. Whether this movement was messianic, nationalist, or spiritual and whether it was a continuation of indigenous beliefs and practices or a syncretic mixture of local beliefs (Altai Jang), Buddhism, Manichaeism, Zoroastrianism, and Orthodox Christianity have been argued 1 Dr. Pegg wishes to thank the World Oral Literature Project, University of Cambridge (2010), the Economic and Social Research Council (2003-07), and the British Academy (2002) for funding her field research in Altai, as well as the Gorno-Altaisk State University for facilitating that research. MAPUCHE PANTHEON The Mapuches believed in two worlds: the natural world, made up of the earth with its people, and a supernatu- ral one which is magical and religious in the sky. The supernatural world is called Wenumapu, and it is a balanced region between the clouds and the universe. It is where gods, spirits and ancestors live. The Anka- wenu was a disorganized and chaotic space next to Wenumapu where evil spirits or Wekufes live. These cause suffering and harm to mankind. CHAU was the creator god of the Mapuche. He was also known as Nguenechèn, Father, the Sun, and Antü. HUEÑAUCA was an evil and fiery spirit who lived in the depths of the Osorno volcano. He produced fire and ruled over a court of beings that could not speak. There was often a male goat protecting the entrance to his cavern. KAI-KAI FILU was the evil sea serpent who carried two of Chau’s rebellious sons within him. Kai-Kai Filu was always planning to take power away from his father the creator. When he got mad he created tidal waves, floods and earth quakes by violently flapping his giant tale. KÜPUKA FUCHA and KÜPUKA KUSHE were the god and goddess of abundance. KUSHE means “witch”. This goddess was both the wife and mother of Chau (Nguenechèn) the creator god. She was also known as Moon, Blue Queen and Queen Maga. NAHUEL was a god in the shape of a tiger. PILLAN was the god of thunder as well as a fire spirit. He protected the elements and humans and was the creator of thunder and lightning. -

Early Metal Technology There is more to metal technology than just straight smelting, melting, casting, hammering, filing and polishing. Maybe not a lot more, but enough to warrant a few modules: 1. The Seven Metals of Antiquity Until the 14th century AD, (Western) humankind only distinguished seven metals, known as the "seven metals of antiquity": Gold, Silver, Copper, Iron, Tin, Lead and Mercury. Zinc, covered above, was unknowingly used as alloy element in copper (producing brass) but never obtained in its elemental state. Copper and iron will not be dealt with here since they are covered extensively in the backbone of the Hyperscript. The distinction of seven metals does not mean that these metals were seen as what we now call elements. Up to about 1700, only the four "old" elements (earth, water, fire and air) plus Aristotle's 5th element ("aether") "existed"; metals were a mixture of earth and water. Mercury, for example, was seen as some modification of silver. Its Greek name was Hydrargyrum", meaning "watery silver". In fact, one and the same word might have been used for different metals in some ancient culture. In ancient Greek Copper and probably all its alloys was called "chalcos" after the copper mines at Chalcis in Euboea.
