Natural Environment for a Good Holiday and Leisure Time

Located at the crossroads of several bio-geographic regions, is an area of above average diversity of land, sea and underground habitats. This is a rare European landscape which on a small area boasts as many as eight national parks and eleven nature parks. Untouched natural landscapes and flora and fauna make an excellent itinerary for ecological tourism. Along with a rich cultural history, landscape diversity ranging from plains to high mountains and the sea, Croatia is also an ideal place for lovers of adventure. The unique Croatian seascape, beautiful coastline, bays, beaches with pine trees, picturesque coastal towns scattered throughout the land, and more than a thousand islands, simply grab one's attention with their uniqueness.

The Purity and Beauty of Croatian Beaches

Due to the beautiful beaches and clear waters, the Croatian coast has, in the past few years, attracted more and more visitors hungry for fun, rest and recreation. It has been recognized by the world's magazines, which continually and increasingly place it on their lists of the best summer destinations. In 2011, a number of world-renowned magazines included some of Croatian beaches on their prestigious lists of the best and according to the readers of the British newspaper The Sunday Times Travel Magazine, Croatia was declared the third best European destination in the category 'European Beach Destination' for 2011, in a strong competition of world famous destinations.

The annual report by the European Environment Agency and the European Commission best speaks in support of the high environmental standards of the Croatian Adriatic. In 2012 the report showed that Croatian beaches were among the cleanest in Europe, with 97.3 percent purity, immediately after Cyprus, where 100 percent of beaches are pure. Countries which were ranked after Croatia are Malta (95.4 per cent), Greece (94.2 percent) and Ireland (90.1 percent). The data for Croatia refers to 913 beaches of which 887 are on the coast. The report stated that not a single beach had an unauthorized amounts of Escherichia coli and none had to be closed during the season.

The results showed that the overall purity of European beaches remains high, however in 2010, compared to the previous year it was reported that the amount of water that meets the criteria of purity had fallen by 3.5 percent, while the number of those which meet the recommended criteria was down by 9.5 percent.

In total, across Europe there were more than 21 000 coastal beaches and inland bathing sites on the territory of the European Union, Croatia, Montenegro and Switzerland.

Another statistic which shows that the sea at Croatian beaches is of high quality and among the cleanest in the Mediterranean is the data of the Croatian Ministry of Environmental Protection, Physical Planning and Construction for last year by which the water was excellent at 94 percent of Croatian beaches.

Also, from year to year more than a hundred Croatian beaches and marinas have been awarded the Blue Flag - a guarantee that the beach and the sea are clean and well maintained, that there are lifeguards watching over the swimmers and that you can get ice cream and juice without a lot of walking. At the beginning of the 2012 season, such a flag could be seen at 124 places. Along with the crystal clear sea, the main feature and specialty of the long Croatian coast with more than a thousand islands and islets are its many and varied beaches, where everyone can find their favorite part of the sea and shore: the shallow sandy or pebble beaches for families with children, romantic and hidden coves or rocks, the already famous beaches with entertainment and nightlife or sports programs, windy bays and channels for windsurfers, quiet bays and reefs for diving ... The coast and beaches are mostly stone, gravel and sand with countless bays and rocks. The vegetation is mainly conifers (pine, larch, cypress ..), but in some areas of Istria and the Kvarner one can find shade under pine and sessile oak. Tides have relatively small amplitudes at approximately 0.5 m

Sandy Coves of Spjaža and Bok on the Island of West and south of Lošinj is a group of inhabited islands (Lošinj Archipelago). Archipelago of islands - Susak, Srakane and Ilovika, protect Lošinj from the open sea and impose an outer, historic navigation route. Standing out with its uniqueness is the island of Susak , which is made of sand, and is the only such island on the Adriatic. Natural sandy lagoons, reed bed, open waters, isolation, peace and quiet... all this can be found in a sea of sand on Susak. The island has no roads, cars or noisy nightclubs - just dusty paths that connect the Lower and Upper Village, the cemetery and the surrounding bay. The coast of the island is rocky, with some gravel and two large sandy bays: Spjaža and Bok. One might say that these bays are like twin sisters: located next to each other and both graced with a shallow, sand covered seabed.

Spjaža is the largest bay on the island. On its west coast lies the Lower Village. Shallow water, soft sand and the vicinity of the village make this bay ideal for small children. Given that the entire Lower Village lies on its banks, it is also the most accessible beach. Apart from this, it is the only one on Susak that offers some additional benefits such as sunshades, deckchairs, kayaks and beach volleyball. In its vicinity there are several cafes and restaurants.

Unlike Spjaža, in the Bok Bay there are no houses, coffee shops or any other facilities. Bok was always considered a nudist beach. The large sandy beach in the Bok Bay became known as the health resort Seebad Sansego at the beginning of the 20th century. In those days the Lošinj spas and sanatoriums offered sun, air and sand baths, as well as grape therapy, as part of their healing program on Susak. The sun-warmed sandy shallows and fine hot sand are believed to be medicinal for women who have problems with fertility.

The bora wind, which starts at the foot of Velebit, generally slightly calms down by the time it reaches Susak, but big waves on the shallow sandy Bok Beach can pose a fun challenge for swimmers. If you happen to have some sort of board at hand, you can try riding the waves.

Paržine Beach on the Island of Ilovik Island continues form the southern part of the island of Lošinj, from which it is divided by Ilovačka Vrata (gate). The largest bay with a sandy beach is Paržine, located on the southeast side of the island. Ilovik now has about 100 inhabitants, who mostly work in fishing, sheep-breeding, agriculture and tourism. It is interesting that today, three times more Iloviknians live in the U.S. than on the island.

The rocky landscape with only one or two branches of aromatic herbs that are grazed by sheep creates a unique impression. Due to the location of the island under the Velebit Mountain, from which strong bora winds blow throughout the year (especially in the winter) the island of Pag is almost completely covered with salt from the Velebit Channel. In the south of the island of Pag, in a beautiful natural bay lies Povljana. Facing the west, it enables every guest to enjoy the beauty of the Mediterranean. It is protected from the strong winds bora and scirocco and many beaches offer the possibility of an unforgettable holiday. Here the Dalmatian and the Kvarner islands touch each other in the crystal clear waters along the rows of rugged islands and pine forests. Povljana boasts miles of beautiful beaches. The sandy beach, with the status of the main city beach, is in fact very rare for this part of the Adriatic Sea and is the oldest beach in Povljana.
