Summer Term 2017 In Federation with Bilbrook (CE) and Middle Schools

Welcome to

Welcome to our summer term newsletter. CONTENTS This academic year has seen many high points with some excellent STUDENT NEWS work in many academic areas. However, it is the breadth and depth English trip to Paris of education we provide for our students outside the classroom that 6th form Cambridge visit makes me proudest. One of the stated goals is to educate the whole Y12 trip to person and to not just focus on exam results. There are innumerable opportunities for our youngsters to get involved in activities beyond Geography visit to Borth the classroom and I am very grateful to the staff who volunteer Y10 Work Experience there own time to ensure our students are so well catered for. Business in the Community

The end of the academic year is a time of transition for both Visit to Jaguar Land Rover students and staff. In the days leading up to the Easter break, Mrs Carter and Ms Lewis accompanied a group of 19 Post-16 students on a trip to the French capital. This was to help them understand and contextualise the ‘Paris Anthology’ that the group have been studying as part of their A-level English Language and Literature qualification.

Over a warm and busy four days, we covered a vast array of what Paris had to offer: from the depths of the city’s catacombs to the heights (and many steps leading up to it!) of Sacre Coeur; from the tranquillity of a cruise down the River Seine to the mania of the Champs Elysees on a sunny Saturday morning.

If you think of Paris and all of its cultural delights, we went there! The Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, Pon Neuf, Bastille, Le Louvre… no stone was left unturned, no metro line untraveled. We left with sore feet, aching limbs and memories to last a lifetime: le voyage était incroyable!

In April, a group of eleven Year 12 students visited Sidney Sussex college in Cambridge on a two-day visit and stayed in the halls of residence overnight.

During their trip they experienced a lecture from a professor of Veterinary Science about the drugs testing of Olympic horses, and had some UCAS related master classes.

They also had the opportunity to explore the

city centre. Page 5 Volume 29

On 13th June, our Year 12 Geographers travelled to Birmingham to investigate the success of urban regeneration schemes in the city centre.

The students completed surveys around the Bullring before looking at the Central Library and Brindley Place, as well as the Mailbox and the proposed changes to Paradise Circus.

On 22nd June, the Y12 Geography students visited Borth on the Welsh coast where they investigated the impact of coastal defences.

The students carried out research using questionnaires and spoke to local residents, businesses and visitors to the area, as well as measuring sediment height either side of the groynes.*

The weather was dry and breezy and the ice-creams were cold!!

* groyne = a low wall or sturdy timber barrier built out into the sea from a beach to check erosion and drifting Page 6 Summer Newsletter

As a result of the Football Academy visit to Boston, USA to take part in the Needham Memorial Trophy in 2016, two of our Year 13 students were talent-spotted by scouts and have been offered scholarships in the USA. Well done and best of luck to them both.

James Weaver has been offered a scholarship at Central Mississippi College from mid-August. James was also the top goal scorer in the British Colleges Division this season.

Tom Edge has been offered a full scholarship at Campbellesville University in Kentucky from

In July, 12 Year 9 and 10 students from Codsall High School volunteered to take part in a “cook- off” competition held at the school and run by Mid-Counties Co-op. The Co-op supplied all the ingredients, and the team judging the competition - a panel of senior management from Mid- counties Co-op - couldn’t believe the standard of dishes produced.

The students worked in teams of two and prepared for the event for a few weeks leading up to the competition. All teams chose their own recipes and the judges had a hard task choosing the finalists. The two finalist teams were Chloe Powell and Lily Pearson, and Sophie Lloyd and Chloe Walley.

Chloe Powell and Lily Pearson

The final will be held in store at Codsall Co-op where the finalists recipes will be cooked in-store by a professional cook and the public will choose the overall winner. The judges thought the behaviour and communication skills of the students was a credit to the students, their parents and the school. Sophie Lloyd and Chloe Walley A big thank you to all the students that entered the competition and to Mrs Green and Mrs Patel for their support on the day and during the weeks leading up to the event.

Y10 students took part in a week-long work placement from 3rd-7th July. The aim was to give them an experience of the workplace and to help them decide on a future career path. Here are some of their experiences:

“I had a great time at Porsche. I went in all the cars and was taken out on a number of test drives. I also helped to keep the cars in pristine condition in the showroom, helping to polish them. I worked in a variety of departments including the offices where I helped with filing and worked on spreadsheets. Overall a great experience.” The Porsche Centre told Mrs Davies that Fin had been fantastic and they were really impressed with him.

Fin Bevan (O1) following his placement at The Porsche Centre.

“I spent my time training with the U18s. I did a bit of analysis to help me understand what they do in game situations. I went to the first team training ground and did some gym work there. I trained at the Alan Higgs Centre with the first and second year scholarships and it made me understand and think about what I want to do. I really enjoyed my time with them.”

Jaiden White (M7) following his placement at Coventry City FC.

“I was at Tettenhall College working on their school production of ‘Seussical the Musical.’ I did their stage make-up and was on-call (helping out) back stage during the show. I enjoyed it because it fits the career path I would like to go down as I enjoy musicals, taking part and helping out. They invited me back to help with their production next year.”

Hannah Austin (V5) following her placement at Tettenhall College.

“For my work experience I went to Moog where I used CAD programming, testing the stress actuators can take, system engineering. I enjoyed wiring an actuator so it can be used on a test rig, taking an actuator apart and then rebuilding it to go on a test rig. I enjoyed using a CAD program called Solidworks. I also worked with many different teams throughout the week such as the design team, stress team and production team.”

Jack Nichols (O2) following his work experience at Moog.

“On work experience I had a lovely time. I experienced what it was like working with ages between 19-60. This isn’t something that I would come across on my daily schedule at school. I worked in a very established hair and beauty salon where I was able to learn the shade charts of hair colours. I learned how to deal with customers and gained customer service knowledge.”

Ellie-Mai Humphries (J5) following her work experience at ND Hair and Beauty in Tettenhall. Page 8 Volume 29

Students at Codsall High School have opportunities to be involved in an extensive, nationally accredited awards programme.

In 2017, the school was awarded the Quality in Careers Standard national quality award for its careers education, advice, promotion and delivery of work related learning.

Our careers service informs and advises, providing guidance and inspiration for students’ next steps in education, training, work placements and apprenticeship opportunities.

Students in Years 10 and 12 benefit from our work experience programme in the summer term which allows them to build useful skills that cannot be taught in the classroom environment as well as helping to guide them in choosing the right sector to work in.

There are many careers advice opportunities available throughout the year from college and university presentations and visits to the Skills Show, RAF STEM Roadshow and JLR site visits, to our annual employability skills day and careers event attended by many local colleges, universities and businesses including Staffs. Police, Royal Navy and the RAF.

We are also part of the Speaker for Schools programme which provides our students with the chance to meet with leading, influential figures from all industries and backgrounds, who share their experiences, inspiration and insights.

During National “Responsible Business Week” in April some of our Year 12 Business students took part in a Question Time event organised by the Education Manager from Business in the Community. Codsall high School are business class partners with JLR through BITC.

The event was hosted by the Director of Energy and Programme Management at Walsall Housing Group and the panel was made up of representatives from the Walsall Housing Group, BUILDBASE, Axis, Wates, Jaguar Land Rover and Blakemore & Son Ltd.

Our students, with students from Walsall College and ACE Academy, were given a unique opportunity to question the representatives about ethical business practices, sustainability, how to adapt to modern business practices, recruiting to sustain the local community, and much more. They were prepared for the event by Mr Pollitt. Well done and thank you to all involved, our students were a credit to the school. Summer Newsletter Page 9

On 11th July we held our annual Y10 employability skills day at RAF Museum Cosford. All year 10 students were taken out of their comfort zone to take part in this very realistic event.

Over 50 volunteers from colleges, universities, local companies, the NHS and the Armed Forces conducted one -to-one interviews with the students.

The students completed generic application forms which were submitted before the event. All students attended the day dressed for the work place. This event involves over 200 students taking part in eight Employability skills-based workshops.

Employees from Jaguar Land Rover’s i54 site facilitated the “Production Car Challenge” workshop and monitored students through their tasks. This workshop is used to develop listening and communication skills, understand the skills required to work in a team, develop organisation skills and to enhance the individuals ability to compare quality to specification.

Other activities included team building with rockets; “Career planning for life beyond school” with Carillion; “LEGO team building challenge—Let’s Build!” led by College; and “Preparing for work” led by University, and students took part in a careers quiz based around information, advice and guidance from Ms Flint, our ENTRUST level 6 careers advisor. They were all put through their paces by the RAF motivation team in a team building exercise.

Feedback collected from students and volunteers involved in the day was very positive. This event raises the profile of our students within their community and with future employers. All the students rose to the occasion and were a credit to themselves, the school and their parents.

All interviewers were asked to nominate the one student who they would employ from those they had interviewed during the day. Summer Newsletter Page 10

In June Mr Pollitt and Mr Pickering took a group of Y12 A-level Business students to the Jaguar Land Rover Engine Manufacturing Centre (EMC) at the i54 site in .

As part of their visit they observed a newly built, world class production site and analysed how a variety of production techniques are used to create the new Ingenium range of engines. These engines are shipped to car production facilities across the UK and the world.

The students toured the factory in both the Diesel assembly line, and the machining area to understand how Lean Production techniques are used across the site. Presentations were given to the students from JLR tutors about the company and its operational plans for the site. There was an opportunity to meet current Level 3 apprentices working at the site and ask questions about their recruitment and current role.

Two main activities were undertaken following the tour; a productivity calculation task and a lean engine production group activity. In the productivity task, students worked with a senior manager from JLR to understand the different variables affecting the HPE (Hours Per Engine) key performance measure of the factory.

The lean engine production activity enabled students to work in groups to produce a model of an engine.

Overall the day was a resounding success with students able to understand at first hand the issues and complexity of the JLR engine production process. We were very fortunate to be able to visit the site. Volume 29 Page 11

Year 11 students took part in their Dressed for Success day on Friday 22nd May. They dressed up in their finery and had a get-together where they were entertained by Aaron Hodgetts and Ms Wakely-Jones.

What an amazing group of young people we said farewell to this year. GOOD LUCK FOR THE FUTURE Page 12 Volume 29

Thursday 6th July saw our Year 11 students dressed up and ready for their Prom at The Park Hall Hotel, in Wolverhampton.

This academic year, all Year 12 Art students were asked to respond to a commission from Codsall Parish Council.

They were given the brief to produce a painting for the Lone Singer gardens in Codsall. Students were asked to produce a mural that represented the many aspects of Codsall from past and present.

Students liaised with Judy Davies, a member of Codsall History Society, in order to gain a better understanding of the events and people that have left a legacy in and around Codsall. The students worked collaboratively to generate ideas and see their creative vision come together in the final outcome.

Welcome back to Beth Edwards who has been coming into Art recently to support students in Year 12 with specialist areas in their learning.

Beth has recently completed her first year of a Fashion and Textiles degree at Wolverhampton University and has returned to offer tuition to some of the Year 12s. She has been offering one-to-one support and teaching students how to develop printed fashion designs in ‘Illustrator’.

It’s great to see how much Beth is loving her degree studies and fantastic that she’s coming back to share what she has been learning within the Art department. A big thank you from us Beth! Page 16 Summer Newsletter

In April 51 students left Codsall and settled in for a long 24-hour coach ride to Zell am See in Austria. We arrived at our superb accommodation for a well-earned rest.

The next day, after the equipment was issued, we set off for the slopes. The snow conditions were fine with a lot of sunshine. The party stayed at Zell am See for a couple of days whilst the groups practiced and refined their skills.

Tobogganing at Zell am See

We spent the last couple of days at the glacier at Kaprun. The snow there was fantastic as was the weather. Despite being a very popular resort, the group made good progress and had a great time.

Many thanks to the students, and to the staff who made the trip run so well - to Mrs Page, Mrs Shillingford, Mr Humphries, Mr Johnson, Mr Davies and Louis Page. Summer Newsletter Page 17

On what turned out to be the hottest Sunday this year, Science teacher Ms Boot braved the heat to complete in the Staffs 70.3 Race with the swim at Chasewater, cycle ride around Staffordshire to Shugborough and a run of laps around Shugborough.

Ms Boot’s report:

Staffs 70.3 Race Report - what can I say? 'Hot' 💦

I wasn’t as relaxed as I would like to have been, and it was very warm waiting in a wet suit. The swim was horrendous for me, but ideal conditions really - not sure if it was asthma or panic - need to get this sorted! I really thought I was going to miss the cut off - thank you to all the concerned supporters - as the announcer let everyone know I was safely out.

I was a bit worried as I would be near the bottom of Age group as I had such a slow swim at 1:06, but I soon caught up with everyone on the bike and passed lots, felt strong on the hills and even got quite a few personal records on sections. I really enjoyed the bike, even with the heat, I just chucked water on me at every chance.

The run was roasting - knew there was no point in trying to beat last years’ time and just took it steady, the showers on route were fab I've never chucked so much water over myself! I felt I finished strong if not as quick as I would have liked to. Grateful to finish considering how many didn’t. A special mention to my daughter for being there at the end and suffering the heat.

Lesson learned now as I look back - Don’t ever, ever give up!

Ms Boot’s next, and main race, is Ironman Wales on 10th September 2017, 2.4 mile swim, 112mile bike, 26.2mile run.

I suppose I had better get back to training. Page 18 Summer Newsletter

On Friday, 16th June, the Football Academy hosted an U15 football

tournament on the 4G pitches.

The event attracted 20 teams from across the area and spanning four leagues locally.

The event was specifically a recruitment evening for the Football Academy, to show off our facilities and do a presentation for the lads and their parents.

The final, between Stafford Rangers U15s and Continental Star from Birmingham, finished 0-0 after full-time and went straight to sudden death penalties. The eventual winners, Stafford Rangers, won 1-0. Commiserations to Continental Star who played some fantastic football throughout the tournament.
