Box 304 L’Orignal, ON K0B 1K0 NEWS RELEASE For immediate release Glengarry-Prescott-Russell Day: fifth time’s the charm TORONTO, March 19, 2014 – It was with great pride that the United Counties of Prescott (UCPR) and Russell organized today the fifth edition of Glengarry-Prescott-Russell Day at Queen's Park. Since 2008, Glengarry-Prescott-Russell Day has allowed the UCPR and the Township of North Glengarry to showcase local food products in front of the entire Legislative Assembly of the Government of Ontario as well as members of their staff. This year, more than 200 people took part in the event, which was an undeniable success. Among those in attendance were Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, Ministers Bob Chiarelli, Brad Duguid, John Gerretsen, Michael Gravelle, Eric Hoskins, Linda Jeffrey, Jeff Leal, Deb Matthews, Ted McMeekin, Madeleine Meilleur, Glen Murray, Yasir Naqvi, Charles Sousa, and Official Opposition Leader Tim Hudak. “This wonderful day allows us to showcase to Ontario Ministers and MPPs our regional products as well as our ongoing projects,” stated Jean Paul St. Pierre, Warden of the United Counties of Prescott and Russell. “Thanks to Glengarry-Prescott-Russell Day, we have been and continue to be recognized across the province – and we reminded them that the sun rises right here in Eastern Ontario.” The showcased regional products include those of the St-Albert Cheese Cooperative, L’Orignal Packing, Skotidakis Goat Farm (St-Eugène), Mariposa Farm (Plantagenet), Cakes On St-Philippe (Alfred), le Café Bocado (Rockland), Au Domaine du verger Cléroux (Casselman), Chez l’Boulanger Bakery (Rockland), Vert Fourchette (Vankleek Hill), La Binerie Plantagenet, Beau’s All Natural Brewing Co. (Vankleek Hill), Cassel Brewery Co. From the Yonge Street Riot to the Carding Controversy: Policing and Surveilling the Black Community in Toronto, Canada, 1992-2016 By Maria Kyres A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate Program in Cultural Studies in Conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada September, 2017 Copyright © Maria Kyres Abstract In the last decade, the conversation surrounding racial profiling and carding in the city of Toronto garnered much public and scholarly attention. Many journalists, academics and activists have examined the Community Contacts Policy, also known as carding, as well as mass incarceration and the police shootings and killings of unarmed, young Black men. The Yonge Street Uprising and the carding controversy in Toronto serve as two case studies to explore the ways that Black men have been disproportionately profiled, policed and surveilled in this country, particularly in the province of Ontario. Despite the fact that the Yonge Street Uprising and the carding controversy occurred decades apart, a common thread throughout both cases was the narrative of Black male criminality. In addition, it became apparent that many of the practices employed in contemporary society, such as racial profiling, carding and mass incarceration were derived from slavery, with the goal of limiting the freedom and mobility of Black people. Therefore, an examination of Canada’s historical treatment of Black people is necessary in order to demonstrate how practices rooted in slavery, such as, fugitive slave advertisements and historical representations of Black criminality helped inform current police practices. Through an analysis of historical, legal, criminological, and critical race scholarship, this work seeks to examine how and why Black people, specifically Black men, were and continue to be disproportionately more likely to be policed, surveilled and incarcerated.

Their requests are apparently based on Draft Policies which have not been formally introduced or discussed in the house. These articles have been reported by media, but in subsequent communications from the provincial government in response to such articles, they have steadfastly reiterated their commitment to expanding access to natural gas in rural Ontario. With all due respect, it is unacceptable and frankly insulting that attempts are made by some to influence the Ontario Energy Board based on rumors and newspaper reports. Particularly without having or requesting input from others involved in the hearing who may have a different view on this important issue. Based on our understanding, and based on dealings with other arm’s length Boards appointed by the Province, it is a Board’s duty and obligation to act and consider matters before the Board. Not to act, or react or interfere with ongoing proceedings based on rumours or based on something that may or may not take place in the future is wrong.

Ensuring the Right Care, at the Right Time, in the Right Place Ontario Improving Access to Home and Community Care in York Region NEWS December 11, 2013 Seniors and residents in York Region are receiving better access to home care and community supports to help them live independently and at home longer. Ontario is providing over $27.5 million to support home care for over 7,400 more seniors and for expanded community health care services, including mental health supports, in the Central Local Health Integration Network (LHIN). This investment will support programs that reduce unnecessary emergency room and hospital admissions, including: . Improved access to culturally and linguistically appropriate mental health and addictions services, including enhanced crisis and trauma care through expanded services such as mobile crisis teams . Increased home care and an expansion of Home First, which helps patients move from hospital to home faster with additional community services . Additional spaces for supportive housing and assisted living services. Improving access to home care and community supports is a key priority of Ontario’s Action Plan for Health Care and helps to provide the right care, at the right time, in the right place. This is part of the Ontario government's economic plan to invest in people, invest in infrastructure and support a dynamic and innovative business climate.
