The route of this walk is shown below in the two maps. Starting on Fenwick Rd at Lidl Supermarket, walking towards Eastwood Toll then right onto Rouken Glen Rd, turning right at Spiersbridge Roundabout through Thornliebank, and straight on towards the Round Toll at Pollokshaws. Fenwick Road 1. Lidl (site of former Tudor Cinema), at Dalmeny Avenue. Opened as a cinema in 1936 and closed in 1962. Crescent Cinema Company chain, Bernard Frutin. Designed by Lennox & McMath. After cinema closed intended to become a synagogue but demolished and supermarket build. 2. Orchard Park Hotel, at Park Road. Built in the early 1900’s as a private house – Orchard House. On site of Orchard Farm. Became a maternity home from 1947- 1962. 3. Maverton Buildings. Shops on ground floor with flats above. Built c.1908 with a public hall in the basement. At some point hall split into separate basements for each shop. 4. Orchardhill Parish Church, on Church Road. Built c. 1899, Henry Edward Clifford. B listed. Still in use by the Church of . 5. Synagogue, Maryville Avenue. On this site since 1968. Previous to that the Jewish congregation met in premises in May Terrace. 6. Rhuallan House, at Montgomery Drive. B listed. Built as a private house for William Brown, coal merchant, c.1890. In 1940 it became the local branch of the British Legion. By 1956 it was the local library and community facility. Sold to private developer in 2014. Now residential use. 7. Eastwoodhill House, at Berryhill Drive. Built c.1850/60 as a private house for William Miller, the proprietor of the Print Works. B listed. Now a Church of Scotland care home. 8. The Thumb, at Eastwood Toll, 1987. Retirement flats which replaced the old crossroad (Nellie's Toll). Called the ‘Thumb’ as the vacant land was an eyesore – ‘stuck out like a sore thumb’! 9. Giffnock South Parish Church, on Greenhill Avenue. Stewart & Paterson, 1913. "Foundation stone 1927". B listed. 10. 2 & 4 Mains Avenue. Former bank and Post Office now a restaurant. Early 20th century.

Rouken Glen Road 11. Eastwood Lodge. Mid 19th century. Single storey gate lodge with Tudor detailing. B listed. 11a. Eastwood House, Eastwood Park. Eastwood House. A 19th century mansion house, now a function suite for East . C listed. Possibly built in the 1830s by one of the Thomsons of Camphill or was it for Thomas Smith, a leading merchant at the time. Not sure. Land originally owned by the Earl of Eglinton. 12. Thornliebank House (remains), Rouken Glen Park. Built sometime after 1829 by Dugald Bannatyne, Postmaster of Glasgow. Originally known as Birkenshaw House. Name changed to Thornliebank House in 1879 by Alexander Crum. Demolished in 1963.

Spiersbridge Road, Thornliebank 13. Thornliebank Parish Church 1855 14. Thornliebank Woodlands Parish Church (former) at Woodlands Road. 1891, C listed. Converted to flats c. 1999. 15. Alexander Crum Memorial Library. Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, 1897. B listed. Built to commemorate Alexander Crum of the Thornliebank Printworks, who died in 1893. 16. Thornliebank Print Works. All that remains of this substantial enterprise is the gateposts. Area now occupied by Spiersbridge Industrial Unit.

Main Street, Thornliebank 17. Unitas Building. Built by the Co-operative Society in 1906 – stated on wall plaque. Shop on ground floor, flats above. 18. St Vincent de Paul RC Church. Gillespie, Kidd and Coia, 1960. Notable stained glass windows above entrance. 19. Thornliebank Cooperative Building. Instituted 1861 (wall plaque)

Thornliebank Road 20. Thornliebank Primary School. Designed by William Gardner Rowan and built by HE Clifford, 1896. B listed. 21. Old Eastwood Cemetery. Built up around the site of early church, also site of parish churchyard until 1781. 22. Auldhouse Court. 17th century L-plan house, probably dated by 1631 fireplace lintel. B listed. 23. Eastwood Parish Church, Road. Charles Wilson, 1863. B listed. Completed by David Thomson after Wilson’s death. Foundation stone laid November 1862, opened 1863. Some reconstruction 1932, William Baillie. B listed. Gifted by Sir John Maxwell to replace a church of 1781. 24. TA Drill Hall, 230 Auldhouse Road. The building is a purpose built drill hall, built around 1920 with some partial demolitions to the rear and later 20th century alterations to the west gable. Arts and Crafts style. C listed.

Timeline - Giffnock 1833 Nellie's Toll or Eastwood Toll was established. 1835 Sandstone first quarried in Giffnock 1850s Mansion House, now Eastwood House, built 1854 Glasgow coal mining firm, Baird & Stevenson, took over quarrying operations at Giffnock 1858 Thornliebank House, first Birkenshaw House, later Rouken Glen Mansion House, reconstructed by Walter Crum. 1890's Residential Giffnock began to develop around the station and Eastwood Toll 1892 Gas first introduced to Giffnock 1892 Rhuallan House built for William Brown, a coal merchant. 1895 Redhurst House built of local Giffnock brick by Mr & Mrs Yuille 1896 Orchardhill Church opened, "B" listed building. 1904 William Graham Crum sold Rouken Glen Estate to Cameron Corbett M.P. for Glasgow, later Lord Rowallan 1905 First tram to Giffnock 1906 1st May, Lord Rowallan donated the grounds of Rouken Glen to the Corporation of Glasgow for the people of Glasgow - officially opened 26th May. 1911 Last horse bus between and Eastwood Toll Newton Mearns 1914 Lord Weir bought Eastwood Estate including Mansion House. 1934 Giffnock Synagogue in May Terrace is built 1934-35 Williamwood scheme built 1936 Tudor Cinema built by Alex Frutin, on Fenwick Rd where Lidl now stands 1936-38 Orchard Park scheme built 1957 Rhuallan House gifted by the British Legion to the District Council in 1957 1960 Last gas lamp disconnected, now at 272 Fenwick Road 1962 Eastwood Toll reconstructed 1963 Thornliebank House, later Rouken Glen Mansion House, demolished 1968 County Council bought 60 acres of Eastwood Park and Mansion House -Eastwood House 1987 The Thumb retirement flats built at Eastwood Toll
