On March 11th, just three days before DAFT’s annual full-day assembly of media pros and teachers for Round 1 judging at Lawrence Technological University, we had to make the call to move all the entries and evaluations online due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Our judges rallied and over the weekend, over 60 judges carefully reviewed nearly 300 hundred entries-- many devoting much more time to their comments than would normally be permitted in a 7-hour day. Thank you judges and special thanks to Jody Gaber and her team at LTU who had done so much preparation-- and special thanks to Dan and Michelle and the Buddy’s Pizza family who was ready to feed our judging team as they have done for so many years--and for once again designing and donating this year’s awesome t-shirts.

The quality of production, script-writing and insight from Michigan’s young filmmakers continues to astound our judging panel. The school programs and their excellent instructors (many new to DAFT this year) show their untiring support in providing students the foundation for achieving their dreams of producing their own artwork. Over the past 52 years, DAFT’s alumni have moved on to great things--even this spring director Dan Scanlon of ’s Onward, screenwriter Dan Casey of Fast & Furious 9 and writer/director brothers Brett and Drew Pierce with their indie horror drive-in hit The Wretched are all doing DAFT proud.

Thanks everyone for making our four nights of live-streaming a huge success, especially Larry, Elliot, Emily, Margaret, Jody, Catherine and the whole team at the DIA and Detroit Film Theatre for supporting this venture as we celebrate our 30 year partnership. 5 Judging and Awards 52nd Michigan Student Film Festival

Recognized by the American Film Institute as the longest-running K-12 student film festival in the nation, the Michigan Student Film Festival was founded by the non-profit DAFT (Digital Arts, Film and Television) as a showcase for Michigan students to demonstrate their skills and to network with one another and industry professionals.

The Judging Process March 14-17th, first-round judging took place online with over 60 judges viewing entries from across the state. After each viewing, every judge completed a digital review form which will be returned to the students--rarely done in film festivals. The second round of judging makes overall recommendations of the follow levels of awards based upon judges’ feedback:

Merit Certificate - Commendation for undertaking and completing a media production. Honor Certificate - Cited for a higher than average level of quality in their content and/or technical achievement. Excellence Certificate - Cited for an outstanding level of quality in their content and/or technical achievement. Best of Show Certificate and Trophy - Chosen from the Excellence level to represent the best student work at the Festival screening.

Recommended Excellence and Best of Show contenders were sent on to the final round hosted by Specs Howard School of Media Arts to determine the Best of Show reel for the four-day streaming--May 14-17, 2020 on Facebook Live.

The 52nd Michigan Student Film Festival is supported primarily through a generous grant from Mary Beth Castorri, honoring her late-husband producer Ron Castorri. The MCACA grant requires matching funds which is gathered through DAFT student, adult and institutional memberships and festival entry submission fees of $12 per entry. We also wish to thank generous financial support from the Michigan Film and Digital Media Office.

Nettie Kravitz (1924 - 2019)

DAFT would like to remember Nettie Kravitz, who died in December 2019 at age 95. Nettie was a colorful character and an outstanding person – a teacher, a thinker, an activist, a friend and benefactor.

Nettie was a founding member of what was then called Detroit Area Film Teachers in 1972 and remained a member until her recent passing. She believed in its core mission of media literacy and remained interested in the films young people created. Nettie held a BFA from Temple University and an MFA from Wayne State University.

She taught Junior high through college, ending her career at Oakland Community College teaching Women’s Studies and Early American Literature. She was beloved by many for her wit and intelligence and dedication to social justice. DAFT honored her at the 50th MSFF.

27 2020 Michigan Media Educator Teacher of the Year Scott A. Galeski Downriver Detroit Student Film Consortium

Congratulations to Scott A. Galeski, DAFT’s 2020 Educator of the Year, a retired police detective who now serves the Downriver Detroit area as a Truant Officer. Scott is also an award-winning independent filmmaker.

“Years ago Scott combined his police work with film making and founded the DDSFC where he recruits kids that are at risk, disadvantaged, outcasts, juvenile delinquents and the abused. The program is mainly funded out of pocket by Scott and the kids pay nothing. If they do not have transportation, Scott arranges rides for them. He recruits students from every walk of life, kids who would never have become close friends if it were not for this program. Once in the program he demands good attendance , grades and behavior in and out of school and they tow the line. He has become more than a disciplinarian or a mentor to these kids, he also is a father figure. Scott makes them realize their lives matter.” -- Nominator, Lisa Adams
