June 2) EDHS Day at Heritage Park Longest Running Family Business in by George Allen “the downtown sector” of Elmvale Changes Hands As many of you may know the Whitfield family has had a lengthy tradition of service to this community. My Mom and Dad, Mary and Jack Whitfield, bought the pharmacy business in Elmvale in April 1953. At the same time they purchased the Woodland Beach General Store and we ran that business, as a family, for 40 years. It became an icon in the area to the extent that the Beach Store or the “Ice Cream Store” was the busiest account for Sealtest Dairies during the summer months, in Simcoe County. Mom and Dad ran the pharmacy for 30 years and became leading members of our community. The example of my parents inspired me to emulate their involvement not only locally, but at the provincial and national levels as well. I purchased the business from them in December of 1982 and have operated the pharmacy for more than 31 years. I'd like to hope that we, as a family, have made some small contribution to the village of Elmvale. This community certainly has returned the reward of kindness, generosity of spirit, wholesome lifestyle, camaraderie and friendship one hundred-fold to us. As many of you may already know the pharmacy has been sold as of April 28, 2014 ….almost 61 years to the day that it has been in our family! I wanted to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude and thanks to all of you for making this business the success that it has become today. I also wanted to reassure you that the staff, that you have come to know and appreciate, will continue to provide the same excellent customer service. I’d like to share with you a bit of prose that I penned a of years ago that found its way to my Wed., May 7 was one of those rare days with sunshine, a great day book of photography entitled “In the Blink of an Eye.” It seems to encapsulate the emotions and feelings for outdoor work, even if the temperature was cold.
