Card Games for Individuals
Card Games for individuals Patience The game is played using a tableau of seven columns. Running from left to right, the first column contains one card, the second contains two, the third three, etc. In each column, the top card should be face up and the rest face down. Deal by placing one card, face up, on the table in front of you then, to this card’s right, six more face down. Repeat this row by row, dealing one less card each time. As well as the face-up cards in the tableau, you’ll work with every third card in the remaining pack, one at a time. Move through the pack by taking three cards from the top and turning them over, creating a new face-up pile. When you’ve passed through the deck, turn it over and start again. In the tableau, a card from the pack may be placed on another card that is one rank higher and of an alternate colour. An eight of hearts, for example, may be placed on either a nine of spades or a nine of clubs - both black suits. Sequences of grouped cards can be moved around according to the same rules as individual cards. Whenever you free up a face-down card on a tableau column, turn it over. If a column is emptied, you can shift any card or sequence into it. If an ace comes into play, position it face up above the tableau, thus beginning a foundation. Foundations are suited and built from ace to king. -

ORCHESTRA FILARMONICA DEI NAVIGLI The name NAVIGLI PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA comes from the intention to put together the three elements that characterize it: NAVIGLI the orchestra gets together and makes its own rehearsals at San Pietro Cusico in the municipality of Zibido San Giacomo. This place is located right in the middle between the two branches of the canal called Naviglio, within the Agricultural South Park of Milan and in the middle of the lower Po Valley. PHILHARMONIC the word means "Association of Music Lovers", and the definition is more appropriate than ever for the intentions and goals of its members. ORCHESTRA this is a group composed of strings, winds and percussion instruments; these elements precisely configure an ensemble of orchestral type. It is an orchestra of "music lovers“ founded with the intent to promote the music at the end of fun, sharing of intentions and musical spirituality among its members, and with the ambition to spread the music and culture music as a whole. Navigli Philharmonic Orchestra, due to its heterogeneous nature, is able to perform the most varied musical repertoires, ranging from '500 to contemporary authors. The orchestra not only performs the classical repertoire, but also jazz, pop and rock, experimenting in different genres of the '900 and of the second millennium. The orchestra is able to deal with a wide repertoire. Each score, to be addressed with coherence, requires its own interpretive scheme that requires, therefore, a variable organic. -

3 ‘Writing back’: literary satire and Oskar Panizza’s Psichopatia criminalis (1898) Birgit Lang Oskar Panizza’s Psichopatia criminalis (1898) constitutes the most biting parody of the psychiatric case study genre in German literature, and has been praised as a subversive work in the broader context of the anti-psychiatry movement of the 1960s and 1970s.1 As a former psy- chiatrist who had been designated for priesthood and later prosecuted in court for blasphemy, Panizza (1853–1921) had intimate knowledge of ‘the three great professions of the Western tradition – law, medicine, and theology – [that] developed practices centred on cases’.2 Psichopatia criminalis for the first time and in literary form problematised the overlap- ping of legal and medical discourse, as well as the interdisciplinary nature of forensics. A short work, Psichopatia criminalis echoes the deterministic reasoning that characterised the psychiatric discourse about creative artists explored in Chapter 2. Panizza’s text is of satirical and even dystopian character. A site of casuistric mastery, it is also the site of the first appearance of Panizza’s doppelgänger, the German Emperor, who became the central figure in the author’s increasingly delusional system of thought. The intrinsic element of judgement that is inherit to the case study genre suited both of these ‘objectives’ well. For a range of reasons Psichopatia criminalis has remained deeply un- comfortable for readers from the very beginning. As this chapter explores, the text has found varying and disparate reading publics. German playwright Heiner Müller (1929–95) affirmatively claimed Panizza as a textual terrorist, and over time various audiences have felt drawn to the theme of political repression in Psichopatia criminalis, without necessar- ily being able to reflect on the link between their attraction and Panizza’s perceived victimisation. -

Trials and Tribulations: Readings and Misreadings of the Revolutionary Body in French Women Novelists, 1792-1799. The Revolution! An unutterable word. Who can claim to understand clearly and precisely that set of events, alternatively glorious and deplorable, some of them the fruit of genius and daring, or again, of the most respectable integrity, and others born of the most perverse iniquity. Jeanbon Saint-André, Committee of Public Safety One would be hard pressed to find a more confusing period than that of the French Revolution, a time when the body politic tried to integrate and embody two equally powerful but ostensibly oppositional ideologies of the eighteenth century: sensibility and rationalism. The dramatic and tragic disjunction between the two, the one calling on passion, the other dispassion, resulted in a schizophrenic production of contradictory signs, symbols, discourse and actions during the revolutionary period, coming into sharp focus during the Terror, 1793-1794. For the Revolutionaries, it was not a question of one mode opposing the other, but rather they conceived the two modes along a continuum as one led to, and justified, the other. The philosophical, medical, and literary work on materialism and sensationism earlier in the century and in the years leading up to 1789 set the foundations for this connection. Following J. J. Rousseau, the revolutionary’s aim was to embody reason, virtue and sensibility. The violent acts resulting from the sensibility/rationalism dyad, however, showed up the contradictions inherent in connecting the two. The internal conflict within revolutionary discourse, which proclaimed on the one hand love and compassion for one’s fellow man, and cold hard impartial justice on the other, was subject to heated discussion amongst the revolutionaries whose members tried to negotiate the disjunction; for some, such as St. -

Phytopoetics: Upending the Passive Paradigm with Vegetal Violence and Eroticism Joela Jacobs University of Arizona [email protected] Abstract This article develops the notion of phytopoetics, which describes the role of plant agency in literary creations and the cultural imaginary. In order to show how plants prompt poetic productions, the article engages with narratives by modernist German authors Oskar Panizza, Hanns Heinz Ewers, and Alfred Döblin that feature vegetal eroticism and violence. By close reading these texts and their contexts, the article maps the role of plant agency in the co-constitution of a cultural imaginary of the vegetal that results in literary works as well as societal consequences. In this article, I propose the notion of phytopoetics (phyto = relating to or derived from plants, and poiesis = creative production or making), parallel to the concept of zoopoetics.1 Just as zoopoetics describes the role of animals in the creation of texts and language, phytopoetics entails both a poetic engagement with plants in literature and moments in which plants take on literary or cultural agency themselves (see Moe’s [2014] emphasis on agency in zoopoetics, and Marder, 2018). In this understanding, phytopoetics encompasses instances in which plants participate in the production of texts as “material-semiotic nodes or knots” (Haraway, 2008, p. 4) that are neither just metaphor, nor just plant (see Driscoll & Hoffmann, 2018, p. 4 and pp. 6-7). Such phytopoetic effects manifest in the cultural imagination more broadly.2 While most phytopoetic texts are literary, plant behavior has also prompted other kinds of writing, such as scientific or legal Joela Jacobs (2019).
