Davidson: I had a fairly normal childhood. My parents were very strict Democrats. My father didn't like union workers because they did a lot of pot. My mother was a very strong supporter of unions. I thought I was very apolitical, basically. But, raised in a basically Democratic household, I suspect there was some influence on me. Colander: How did you get into economics? Davidson: My first contact was in college. My folks wanted me to be a doctor—the profession for any young Jewish boy. I didn't want to be a doctor, but I compromised and majored in biochemistry at Brooklyn College. Then I went on to graduate school in biochemistry at the University of Pennsylvania. However, as I approached my Ph.D. thesis in biochemistry I decided I didn't like biochemistry. In the meantime I had met Louise, and became more interested in her than in biochemistry. And she was still back in New York City. So I quit biochemistry and went back to the city. And what do you do in the city? You have to go to business. So I thought of taking business and economics courses, as I'd never taken any such courses as an undergraduate. Louise and I took a Principles of economics course together.

Founded in 1603, the academy counts Galileo Galilei among its original members. It has remained an elite organization of only 540 members, with only 180 of those from outside Italy. Although the academy covers all scientific and literary fields, Kregel will be a member of the division for moral, historical, and philological sciences; specifically, the social and political sciences. Robert Solow, Amartya Sen, the late Paul Samuelson, and fellow Levy Senior Scholar James K. Galbraith are among the other American economists who have been elected foreign members of the academy. An expert in international finance, Jan Kregel is a senior scholar at the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College and director of its Monetary Policy and Financial Structure program. He also holds the positions of professor of development finance at Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia, and Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Missouri–Kansas City. In 2009, Kregel served as Rapporteur of the President of the UN General Assembly’s Commission on Reform of the International Financial System. He previously directed the Policy Analysis and Development Branch of the UN Financing for Development Office and was deputy secretary of the UN Committee of Experts on International Cooperation in Tax Matters.

Its focus is on describing monetary and fiscal operations in nations that issue a sovereign currency. As such, it applies Georg Friedrich Knapp’s state money approach (chartalism), also adopted by John Maynard Keynes in his Treatise on Money. MMT emphasizes the difference between a sovereign currency issuer and a sovereign currency user with respect to issues such as fiscal and monetary policy space, ability to make all payments as they come due, credit worthiness, and insolvency. Mitchell Innes, however, MMT acknowledges some similarities between sovereign and nonsovereign issues of liabilities, and hence integrates a credit theory of money (or, “endogenous money theory,” as it is usually termed by post-Keynesians) with state money theory.

MINSKY COLLECTION: FOLDER LIST The Levy Economics Institute of Bard College Bruce MacMillan, Project Archivist March 2009 INTRODUCTION (1) Document Order: The Project Archivist generally arranged the documents in the Collection in the order in which they were found in their original boxes and filing cabinet drawers. Publications without dates were generally dated by reviewing the dates of sources or references and using the latest year shown. These documents were assigned a circa (“c.”) or “post” date. Some articles of similar title and subject matter, or several articles from one specific journal, were grouped together. (2) Date Range: The earliest publication is dated 1933. The most recent is dated 2008. (3) Folder List Format: For each box in the Collection, the first page of the Folder list for that box provides the following information: “Pages”. This is the number of pages in each document. The front and back covers of bound documents are normally included in the page count. “Location/Contents”. This is the Box Number/Title and the description of each document in that box. (4) Biographical/Historical Note: The Collection consists of the personal papers of Economist Hyman Phillip Minsky (Sept. 23, 1919 - Oct. 24, 1996).     the levy economics institute of bard college BIENNIAL REPORT 2006–2007 The Levy Economics Institute of Bard College was founded in 1986, through the generous support of Bard College Trustee Leon Levy, who contributed immeasurably to the Levy Institute’s development and continued to serve as chairman of its board of governors until his death in 2003. As it grew into a highly esteemed nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy research organization, the Levy Institute benefited from Leon Levy’s early guidance, insight, knowledge, and enthusiasm. The Levy Institute is independent of any political or other affiliation and encourages diversity of opinion in the examination of economic issues. The purpose of all Levy Institute research and activities is to enable scholars and leaders in business, labor, and government to work together on problems of common interest. Levy Institute findings are disseminated—via publications, conferences, workshops, seminars, congressional testimony, and other activities— to an international audience of public officials, private sector executives, academics, and the general public. Through this process of scholarship, analysis, and informed debate, the Levy Institute generates effective public policy responses to economic problems that profoundly affect the quality of life in the United States and abroad.
