Last Folio Yuri Dojc LAST FOLIO YURI DOJC L A S T F O L I O Y U R I D O J C 1 Die fotografi sche Reise Last Folio von Yuri Dojc ist nach vielen Stationen in der Welt an der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien angekommen. Die nunmehrige Station ist die Aula der Akademie mit den 1880 von Anselm Feuerbach gestalteten Deckenbildern des Titanensturzes, ein Ort der geradezu prädestiniert für diese Reise ist. Die Reise hat Yuri Dojc, der in Kanada lebt, in die Slowakei geführt, dort wo er aufgewachsen ist, dort wo er seine Schulzeit verbracht hat, dort wohin er 1968 nach einem Studienaufenthalt in London nicht mehr zurückkehrte. Er kam zurück, um in Bardejow, im Osten der Slowakei, nahe der polnischen Grenze dort in einer Synagoge, in einer verlassenen Schule, shul zu fotografi eren, zu dokumentieren, zu berühren. Dort in Bardejow, wo vor dem Holocaust mehrere tausende Juden und Jüdinnen lebten, wo es ein jüdischen Viertel mit einer Synagoge aus dem 18. Jahrhundert gibt, dort wo Juden und Jüdinnen lebten, dort wo es ein rituelles Badehaus, mikveh, gab, dort wo es koschere Schlachter gab, dort wo es einen jüdischen Friedhof gibt, dort wo am 12. Mai 1942 die Juden und Jüdinnen von den Nationalsozialisten zusammengetrieben wurden, dort wo 3.700 Juden und Jüdinnen in Viehwaggons gedrängt wurden, dort wo sie in die Ghettos und Konzentrationslagern gebracht wurden und die meisten von ihnen ermordet wurden, dort wo sie alles liegen und stehen lassen mussten, dort wo sie die Schule, shul, verlassen mussten, dort wo ihre Bücher in den 2000er Jahren zerfallen, verstaubt, achtlos auf die Böden geworfen zu fi nden sind, dort wo die Bücher auf ihre Leser vergebens warten. Die Reise der Bilder dieser Bücher darf nicht aufhören. Eva Blimlinger Rektorin der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien Last Folio, the photographic journey of Yuri Dojc has reached the Academy of Arts in Vienna after many stops around the world. The Great Hall of the Academy, with its famous ceiling mural of the Battle of the Titans, painted in 1880 by Anselm Feuerbach, seems to have been made for this journey. The journey has led him from Canada where he lives today, to Slovakia, the country in which he grew up, where he went to school, and which he left behind in 1968 after studying in London. In 2006 he returned to eastern Slovakia, to the town of Bardejov near the Polish border, where he stumbled upon an abandoned school, a shul in a synagogue and felt compelled to photograph, to document, to touch. It was here in Bardejov that in the Jewish quarter over three thousand men, women and children had lived before the Holocaust, prayed in an 18th century synagogue, bathed in the mikva ritual bath and were buried in a Jewish cemetery. It was here in Bardejov that 3 700 Jewish men and women had been assembled on May 12th 1942, dragged into cattle trains and deported to concentration camps and ghettos where most of them were murdered. It was here in Bardejov that they were forced to leave all their possessions, to leave behind their school, the shul, and it is here that the decaying, dusty books lie carelessly scattered on the fl oor now, in the early 21st century, waiting in vain for their readers. The images of these books must continue their journey. In heutigem Europa ist es dringender denn je, auf die Humanität des Handelns aufmerksam zu machen. In dieser Zeit, da wir ständig mit Krisen wirtschaftlichen und politischen Ursprungs konfrontiert sind, sollten wir uns bewusst machen, wohin Intoleranz führt und welche Katastrophen sie verursacht. Diese Bilder, die uns zerfallene Bücher präsentieren, oder die uns menschliche Porträts der Überlebenden aus den KZs entfalten, sind dabei nicht nur die Dokumentation einer nicht mehr existierenden Gesellschaft, sondern Warnungen vor jeder extremistischen Strömung, die sich in oft harmlosen Formen auch heutzutage in die zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen einschleichen kann. Der besondere Wert dieser Ausstellung liegt darin, dass sie einen der wichtigsten im Ausland lebenden slowakischen Fotografen zeigt, Yuri Dojc. Auch nach seiner Emigration nach Kanada hat er seine Heimat nicht vergessen. Er kehrt immer wieder zurück, um die Orte und die Menschen zu besuchen, die ihn dazu bewegen, eine so intensive Botschaft der Menschlichkeit zu übermitteln, die wir in diesen Fotografi en spüren. Nach New York, Prag, Cambridge, Brüssel, Rom und der Europäischen Kulturhauptstadt Kosice 2013 folgt jetzt Wien. Ich hoffe, dass die Ausstellung in der Akademie der bildenden Künste genau die Nachricht und die künstlerische Botschaft, die hinter diesem Gedanken steht, auch weitergibt, und dass sie so wie bisher in allen anderen Metropolen aufgenommen und gewürdigt wird. Today in Europe it seems to be more important than at any other time in history to underline the need for human fraternity. At a time of seemingly continuous economic and political crisis, we should more seriously contemplate the catastrophic consequences of intolerance. These pictures, showing us disintegrated books and portraits of those who survived Nazi concentration camps, are not only documents of the life of disappeared communities, but they are also a warning against those extreme currents which have more recently begun to fl ow into the fragile world of human relations. From this point of view the exhibition is of great value, even more so since its creator, Yuri Dojc, is one of the most important and best known Slovak photographers living abroad. Although he emigrated to Canada, he has never forgotten the country of his birth and regularly returns to visit those people and places which inspired him to publish the intense testimony to humanity which can be recognized in these photos. After New York, Prague, Cambridge, Brussels, Rome, and the European capital of culture 2013 Kosice, Vienna follows. I hope that the exhibition being installed in the Akademie fur bildenden Kunste mediates exactly this message, this artistic testimony, and that it will be accepted and evaluated with as much success as it has already experienced in many other places. Es ist unsere Pfl icht, für immer die Fragmente und Überreste der Erinnerungen an Menschen, die wegen mörderischer Ideologien und boshafter Feindschaft gelitten haben, vom Staub der Vergänglichkeit zu bewahren. Yuri Dojc ist einer der Künstler, den seine eigene Vergangenheit, seine eigene Identität dazu bewegt, diese Botschaft des Nicht-Vergessens auf seine eigene Art und Weise weiter zu modifi zieren und auf sie aufmerksam zu machen. Als Sohn eines Überlebenden war es für ihn auch ein Akt persönlicher Rechtfertigung gegenüber dem Schicksal der Juden in Europa, und zwar nicht nur während des Zweiten Weltkriegs, sondern auch in der Zeit danach, bis heute. Das bezeugt auch die Ausstellung „Last Folio“, in der wir nicht nur der menschlichen Geschichte eines verfolgten Volkes begegnen, sondern gleichsam einer intimen Sonde in das, was von einer ganzen Kultur am Rande der Slowakei übriggeblieben ist. Es sind leere Räume, mit Spinnennetzen bedeckte Regale, verschimmelte Bücher und zerfetzte Seiten, die einem den Eindruck vermitteln, als ob alles, was den gebildeten und geistigen Menschen ausmacht, nämlich Literatur, Bibliotheken, Gotteshäuser usw., dem Zerfall geweiht wäre. Das Starke an den Photographien von Yuri Dojc ist nicht nur die Ästhetik des Vergänglichen, sondern vor allem dieser Appell zur Erinnerung, Appell, der mit jedem Staubkorn auf den Torarollen zum Nachdenken anregt, Appell, der mit jedem hebräischen Buchstaben als Menetekel immer wieder neu erscheint. Eine Warnung vor der Katastrophe, die jederzeit wieder passieren kann, wenn die Menschen einander vergessen. Diese Photographien sollen also nicht, in Anführungszeichen, zum „letzten Blatt“ einer tragischen Geschichte werden; sie zeigen nur, wie vergesslich die Menschen sind, und welche Folgen es hat, wenn wir etwas unberücksichtigt beiseite lassen, vor allem etwas so Fragiles wie das Wissen, das in den Worten und Zeilen der Bücher verborgen ist. It is our task to ensure the survival of those fragments and remains of the memories of people who suffered at the hands of murderous ideologies and malicious enmity, maintaining these fragments even through the dust of transience. Yuri Dojc is one of those artists capable of shifting their identities into their own pasts. He does this in his own way, something typical for his art, sending a message of unforgettable challenge and drawing attention to a most painful history. As a son of victims, who were persecuted and who survived, he himself wants to confront the fate of Jews in Europe during and after the Second World War. The exhibition „Last Folio“ testifi es to the story of a persecuted people, and is also an intimate exploration of what was left of a culture forced to the margins of Slovak life.

By understanding these meanings, the educational community can better understand how a particular context and approach influences teacher meaning-making and the ways in which museum teacher education programs shape the learning of participants. Meaning- making is a process of interpretation and understanding experiences in ways that make sense to each individual teacher. Meanings that are formed may impact teachers’ pedagogic interpretation of the Holocaust, which may in turn shape their instructional practices. This instrumental case study used multiple interviews, observations, surveys and documents to explore the meanings teachers make about the Holocaust from participation in Holocaust professional development at a Jewish heritage museum. Participants in the study included nine teachers from public schools and private Jewish schools and two professional developers from the Museum. Each participant was interviewed three times, and six different professional development programs were observed over a period of six months. Programs typically lasted from one to six days and included a presentation by museum staff, Holocaust experts, and survivors. At any museum, each representation of the Holocaust conveys particular messages and mediates Holocaust history through a particular lens.

Serendipity led him, his producer Katya Krausova and their documentary film team to an abandoned Jewish school in Eastern Slovakia, where time had stood still since the day in 1942 when all those attending it were deported to the concentration camps…the school books were there still, essay notebooks with corrections, school reports, birth certificates, school accounts, even sugar still in the kitchen cupboard… all decaying on dusty shelves, the final witnesses to a once thriving culture. These abandoned, disintegrating books are treated by Yuri Dojc like the survivors that they each are - every one captured as a portrait, preserved in their final beauty, pictures speaking a thousand words. Now, years later, his own search, which started with portraits of survivors following his father's death, is transformed into a remarkable photographic narrative. Amongst these many hundreds of books and fragments photographed by Dojc, one stands out especially - one which miraculously found its way from a dusty pile to its rightful heir - a book once owned by Dojc’s grandfather Jakab. Dojc, encountered a Holocaust survivor at his father’s funeral in 1997.

Izstāde „Last Folio” ir sasniegusi Daugavpili laikā, kad Latvija ir Eiropas Savienības Padomes prezidējošā valsts un 2014. gadā Rīga bija Eiropas kultūras galvaspilsēta. Izstāde ir uzskatāms piemērs Eiropas Savienības pieaugošajai klātbūtnei Latvijā un apliecinājums draudzīgu savstarpēji izdevīgu starpvalstu attiecību veidošanai ne vien ar Latvijas galvaspilsētu Rīgu, bet arī ar reģioniem, kā strauji augošo un dinamisko Daugavpili. Nenoliedzami 2013. gadā atklātais iespaidīgais Marka Rotko mākslas centrs ir tam spilgts apliecinājums. Slovākijas Republikas vēstniecības Latvijā vārdā vēlos teikt, ka esam pagodināti pirmo reizi izstādīt “Last Folio” Baltijas valstīs, un ceram, ka fotoizstāde tās apmeklētajiem kļūs par vērtīgu emocionālo pārdzīvojumu, atskatoties tajās smeldzīgajās Eiropas vēstures lappusēs, kas nākotnes vārdā nedrīkst tikt aizmirstas.     PRESS RELEASE Bertelsmann Brings Unique ‘Last Folio’ Exhibition to Latin America • Impressions of bygone Jewish life in Slovakia to be shown in São Paulo • Brazil is a growth market for Bertelsmann Gütersloh/São Paulo, June 30, 2016 – The international media company Bertelsmann is bringing the touring exhibition “Last Folio” to Latin America for the first time. For two months starting August 18, 2016, select artistic photographs by the renowned photographer Yuri Dojc will be on display in Brazil’s biggest city São Paulo. Dojc spent years tracking down possibly the last testimonies to historic Jewish culture in Slovakia – first on his own and then, from 2005, together with the filmmaker Katya Krausova. The result are poignant still lifes of abandoned Jewish buildings and books left behind, as well as memorable portraits of survivors of the terrors of the Nazi reign. At this point the exhibition connects with many of these survivors who came to Brazil and now form a large community in the country. Bertelsmann had already brought the pictures, unique in their authenticity and intensity, to Berlin in spring 2015 to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. At the time, the highly acclaimed exhibition attracted thousands of visitors. The exhibition’s opening at the Jewish cultural center Unibes in the metropolis of São Paulo will be attended by Thomas Rabe, Chairman & CEO of the international media, services, and education group, among others.
