Presents Saxophonist Donald Harrison; a Book Signing by Hugh Wyatt; the Musical, SS Nirvana, and a Talk on the Rescue of Jazz by Foreign Nations Sunday, July 9, 2017 at 2 p.m.

hurch of the Covenant, in conjunction with Kamama Books, will Cpresent acclaimed saxophonist Donald Harrison; a book signing by journalist Hugh Wyatt; a jazz musical called SS Nirvana, and a discussion about the demise of jazz in America and its rise abroad. The event is part of the new Music at Covenant/Jazz Vespers series being sponsored by the Church of the Covenant, a 151-year-old Presby- terian church that attracts a global community and many different faiths because it is located a block away from the United Nations. While jazz has become an international art form that continues to flourish in Europe, Israel, Japan, Africa, and elsewhere, the music is losing its popularity in America. Phoebe’s Fantasy is a biography of Phoebe Jacobs, a Jewish woman who also helped save jazz by serving as a publicist, manager, and “fix- er” for most of its African-American jazz pioneers. They included Eubie Blake, , , , Sarah Vaughan and Wynton Marsalis. She also represented Benny Goodman, , Dave Brubeck, and others. SS Nirvana is a celebrated musical that focuses on many of the afore- mentioned jazz pioneers and is set on a luxury cruise liner. Donald Harrison is a world-famous saxophonist known for creating the “Nouveau Swing,” a style that melds swing jazz and dance music.

Church of the Covenant’s musically-focused vision acts as a catalyst to help the church grow and prosper in body and spirit. Suggested donation: $15. Complimentary coffee and snacks will be served during the book signing and forum. Reverend Cornell Edmonds, Interim Pastor
