Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals 2nd Meeting of the Sessional Committee of the CMS Scientific Council (ScC-SC2) Bonn, Germany, 10 – 14 July 2017 UNEP/CMS/ScC-SC2/Inf.3 DISAGGREGATION OF BIRD FAMILIES LISTED ON CMS APPENDIX II (Prepared by the Appointed Councillors for Birds) Summary: The first meeting of the Sessional Committee of the Scientific Council identified the adoption of a new standard reference for avian taxonomy as an opportunity to disaggregate the higher-level taxa listed on Appendix II and to identify those that are considered to be migratory species and that have an unfavourable conservation status. The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. The document has been prepared by the COP Appointed Scientific Councilors for Birds. The area’s hill jungle is largely untouched by humans and has not been visited by ornithologists since the late 1940s. Even today, this jungle can be considered a primary forest in the literal sense and a “white map” area for most biodiversity. During our recent visits to this extraordinary, species-rich area we compiled an inventory of the avifauna that includes records of more than 440 species. Although the area inventoried covers only about one per- Bonn zoological Bulletin cent of the land surface of Myanmar, the species reported in the inventory include endemics as well as globally threatened taxa and represent more than a third of all known bird species from the Supplementum Vol. 62 (2015) country. Bates 2,3 Signifcant uncertainties remain of how global change impacts on species richness, relative abundance and species composition. Recently, a discussion emerged on the importance of detecting and understanding long-term fuctuations in species composition and relative abundance and whether deterministic or non-deterministic factors can explain any temporal change. However, currently, one of the main impediments to providing answers to these questions is the relatively short time series of species diversity datasets. Many datasets are limited to 2 years and it is rare for a few decades of data to be available. In addition, long-term data typically has standardization issues from the past and/or the methods are not comparable. We address several of these uncertainties by investigating bird diversity in a globally important mountain ecosystem of the Hkakabo Razi Landscape in northern Myanmar. The study compares bird communities in two periods (pre-1940: 1900–1939 vs. post-2000: 2001–2006). Land-cover classes have been included to provide understanding of their potential role as drivers. While species richness did not change, species composition and relative abundance difered, indicating a signifcant species turn over and hence temporal change. Only 19.2% of bird species occurred during both periods. Land-cover model predictors explained part of the species richness variability but not relative abundance nor species composition changes. The temporal change is likely caused by minimal methodological diferences and partially by land-cover. Species richness, relative abundance and species composition are dynamic phenomena and vary in space and over time1,2. -

A multi-gene phylogeny disentangles the chat- Accepted: 20 January 2010 flycatcher complex (Aves: Muscicapidae).—Zoologica Scripta, 39, 213–224. doi:10.1111/j.1463-6409.2010.00423.x We reconstructed the first well-sampled phylogenetic hypothesis in the chat-flycatcher complex combining nuclear and mitochondrial sequences. The dichotomy between chats- terrestrial feeders and flycatchers-aerial feeders does not reflect monophyletic groups. The flycatching behaviour and morphological adaptations to aerial feeding (short tarsi, broad bill, rictal bristles) evolved independently from chat ancestors in three different lineages. The genera Alethe, Brachypteryx, and Myiophonus are nested within the Muscicapidae radia- tion and their morphological and behavioural similarities with the true thrushes Turdidae are presumably the result of convergence. The postulated close relationships among Erith- acus, Luscinia and Tarsiger cannot be confirmed. Erithacus is part of the African forest robin assemblage (Cichladusa, Cossypha, Pogonocichla, Pseudalethe, Sheppardia, Stiphrornis), while Luscinia and Tarsiger belong to a large, mainly Asian radiation. Enicurus belongs to the same Asian clade and it does not deserve the recognition as a distinct subfamily or tribe. We found good support also for an assemblage of chats adapted to arid habitats (Monticola, Oenanthe, Thamnolaea, Myrmecocichla, Pentholaea, Cercomela, Saxicola, Campicoloides, Pinarochroa) and a redstart clade (Phoenicurus, Chaimarrornis and Rhyacornis). Five genera (Muscicapa, Copsychus, Thamnolaea, Luscinia and Ficedula) are polyphyletic and in need of taxonomic revision. Nature is further a dynamic entity that never remains the same- that changes, that adjusts, that evolves; 'equilibrium', that is in spirit, balanced and harmonious. Nature, in fact, promotes evolution, radiation and diversity. The current biodiversity is an inherited vital resource to us, which needs to be carefully conserved for our future generations as it holds the key to the progress in agriculture, aquaculture, clothing, food, medicine and numerous other fields. -

We had great views of the endearing Golden-breasted Fulvetta (Hannu Jännes). ULTIMATE NORTHEAST INDIA 31 MARCH / 2 - 23 APRIL 2019 TOUR LEADERS: HANNU JÄNNES This year’s Birdquest epic 24 day tour to the remote northeast corner of the Indian subcontinent was very successful and amassed nearly 500 species. The pre-tour extension to the Khasi Hills of Meghalaya proved a good start with both Dark-rumped Swift and Tawny-breasted Wren-Babbler. The grasslands and semi- deciduous forests of Orang National Park produced a magnificent Tiger and a pair of Brown Fish Owls, and from the Himalayan middle lands to the snowy heights of the Dirang Region, we enjoyed Snow Partridge, Blood Pheasant, Himalayan Monal, Black-tailed Crake, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Slender-billed Scimitar Babbler, the first Naumann’s Thrush for India, a big movement of Fire-tailed Sunbirds and many gorgeous Grandalas. The magnificent Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary never disappoints, and we saw such gems as Rufous-necked Hornbill, Hodgson’s Frogmouth, Ward’s Trogon, Beautiful Nuthatch, Yellow-rumped Honeyguide, Rufous- 1 BirdQuest Tour Report: Ultimate Northeast India www.birdquest-tours.com throated and Long-billed Wren-Babblers, Sikkim Wedge-billed Babbler and Bugun Liocichla. Briefly side tracking into Nagaland was rewarded with Yellow-throated Laughingthrush, a Birdquest lifer, whilst at the world famous Kaziranga National Park we were rewarded with Indian Grassbird, Slender-billed Babbler, Finn’s Weaver, Swamp Francolin and Greater Adjutant. The Assam Plains close to the Dibru Saikhowa National Park and mosaic of the floodplains on route to Roing brought us Bristled Grassbird, Marsh and Jerdon’s Babblers, and Black-breasted Parrotbill. -
