Two years on from our hugely successful inaugural event in Brussels it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the 2009 World Copyright Summit in Washington, DC. This year’s slogan for the Summit – “New Frontiers for Creators in the Marketplace” – illustrates perfectly what we aim to achieve here: remind to the world that creators’ contributions are fundamental for cultural, economic and social development but also that creators – and those who represent them – face several daunting challenges in this new digital economy. It is imperative that we bring to the forefront of political debate the creative industries’ future and where we, creators, fit into this new landscape. For this reason we have gathered, under the CISAC umbrella, all the stakeholders involved one way or another in the creation, production and dissemination of creative works.

  • Archaeological Starch Preservation and Methodological Parameters: Where Does Qaraqara Fit?
ARCHAEOLOGICAL STARCH PRESERVATION AND METHODOLOGICAL PARAMETERS: WHERE DOES QARAQARA FIT? Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Nicole Marie Hernandez, B.A. Department of Anthropology The Ohio State University 2015 Master’s Committee: Professor Julie S. Field, Advisor Professor Kristen J. Gremillion Professor Robert Cook Copyright by Nicole Marie Hernandez 2015 ABSTRACT Starch granule analysis is a relatively new methodology that can aid in various areas of archaeological research, including the determination of subsistence patterns and transitions, mobility, tool use, and ecology. This study examines undecorated ceramic fragments recovered from Qaraqara, Fiji for the presence of adhered starch. Although the three starch extraction methods used were not successful, the research process provides an opportunity to explain the lack of success by investigating ideal archaeological starch preservation parameters and extraction methodologies. Many factors contribute to the rarity of preserved starch granules in archaeological settings, including its bio-chemical structure, the decomposition of microorganisms in soil, chemical interactions, and environmental conditions. To determine ideal environmental conditions for starch preservation, successful extraction methods, and the effect of archaeological materials on success rates for extraction, a meta-analysis was conducted on a sample of archaeological studies that also sought to extract preserved starch. Key environmental variables that support the preservation of starch were identified, including a specific range of average temperatures, rainfall amounts, and altitudes. Using chi-square statistical tests, this study determined that an average temperature of 19-22° C significantly contributes to the preservation of archaeological starch.

  • Rebooting Roseanne: Feminist Voice Across Decades
Home > Vol 21, No 5 (2018) > Ford Rebooting Roseanne: Feminist Voice across Decades Jessica Ford In recent years, the US television landscape has been flooded with reboots, remakes, and revivals of “classic” nineties television series, such as Full/er House (1987-1995, 2016- present), Will & Grace (1998-2006, 2017-present), Roseanne (1988-1977, 2018), and Charmed (1998-2006, 2018-present). The term “reboot” is often used as a catchall for different kinds of revivals and remakes. “Remakes” are derivations or reimaginings of known properties with new characters, cast, and stories (Loock; Lavigne). “Revivals” bring back an existing property in the form of a continuation with the same cast and/or setting. “Revivals” and “remakes” both seek to capitalise on nostalgia for a specific notion of the past and access the (presumed) existing audience of the earlier series (Mittell; Rebecca Williams; Johnson). Reboots operate around two key pleasures. First, there is the pleasure of revisiting and/or reimagining characters that are “known” to audiences. Whether continuations or remakes, reboots are invested in the audience’s desire to see familiar characters. Second, there is the desire to “fix” and/or recuperate an earlier series. Some reboots, such as the Charmed remake attempt to recuperate the whiteness of the original series, whereas others such as Gilmore Girls: A Life in the Year (2017) set out to fix the ending of the original series by giving audiences a new “official” conclusion. The Roseanne reboot is invested in both these pleasures. It reunites the original cast for a short-lived, but impactful nine-episode tenth season.

Lyricist v Songwriter 4-4 Linda Perry’s Dos & Don’ts For Writing Love Songs Source of article: https://artists.spotify.com/blog/linda-perry%27s-dos-and-don%27t-for-writing-love-songs Continued from article 3: Do: Know who you're writing for. The process changes when you're asked to write for a specific artist. Then, it requires stepping outside yourself. "It's a different experience," says Perry. "If it were up to me, I would write sad, depressing, suicidal, Pink Floyd-ish type of songs. That's my style: I like being dark, I like living down a well. And that's where I feel the most." That can make collaboration difficult, but it can also produce exciting results. "It can be tricky, because you could be dealing with someone who really doesn't have any experience of what it feels like to be really down and out or dark and suicidal. So now it's like: here's Mrs. Doom and here's sunshine and lollipops, and you gotta meet both worlds. I have to interpret the sunshine and lollipops and figure out how to make it me and how to make my doom and gloom them. It can become very interesting." Perry is particularly fond of how this juxtaposition plays out in the love songs recorded by the Carpenters. "The songs are written by Burt Bacharach, the majority of them, and they're like, 'Why do birds suddenly appear…' The cheesiest freaking lyrics.
