Edible Subjectivities: Meat in Science Fiction EDIBLE SUBJECTIVITIES: MEAT IN SCIENCE FICTION JOVIAN PARRY A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO January 2019 © Jovian Parry, 2019 ii ABSTRACT This dissertation argues for the critical urgency of both challenging the constitution of subjectivity itself and disputing the a priori exclusion of other animals from attaining some kind of ethico-political subject-status. Deploying a Baradian performative posthumanist analysis attentive to patterns of difference, I engage the theoretical tools of ecofeminism, critical animal studies (CAS), and material ecocriticism to interrogate subjectivity by attending closely and critically to twentieth and twenty-first century Euro- American Anglophone science fiction (SF) stories about meat. Meat animal narratives open the subject to alternative modes of knowing that anthropocentric epistemologies foreclose, intervening against the structural exclusions imposed by various material- discursive apparatuses of domination that define, authorize and enact subjectivity as always and only human, over and against the figure of the animal. SF, a genre of alterity that has long been at the vanguard of literary engagements with nonhuman subjectivities, likewise works to subvert hegemonic notions of the subject as always- already human and complicate overdetermined configurations of “the subject” as an ontologically predetermined entity. Engaging SF narratives about human cattle dystopias, alien encounters, in vitro meat and alimentary xeno-symbiogenesis, I approach subjectivity as an emergent phenomenon born of the intra-action of differentially materialized agential entanglements, and—crucially—their constitutive exclusions. Rejecting subject-object dualism as an unliveable onto-epistemological paradigm that excludes anything edible from relations of respectful use, I argue for the necessity of enacting subjectivities in terms of concrete practices of restraint and humility, with humans firmly situated as embodied animal beings, enmeshed with and accountable to a much larger community of more than human, more than animal and more than animate actants on a finite planet. iii LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT STATEMENT This dissertation was written on the territory of the Huron-Wendat, Petun, Seneca and, most recently, the Mississaugas of the New Credit. Introduction: Subjects in Meat Stories “Among the fogs and miasmas which obscure our fin de millénaire," Guattarri observes, “the question of subjectivity is now returning as a leitmotiv” (Guattarri 1995, 122). Scholarly interest in ‘the animal’ has likewise never been higher than at the turn of the third millennium.1 Critical work on animals and subjectivity typically proceeds either by arguing for the ethical imperative of including (some) other animals in dominant conceptions of ‘the subject,’ or, on the other hand, deploying the material-semiotic figure of the animal as a limit case to deconstruct the notion of subjectivity altogether (Derrida & Roudinesco 2004, 63; Calarco 2017, 35; Glenney-Boggs 2012, 3; Braidotti 2016, 13-4; Weil 2012, 2; Pick 2011, 2). Often construed as ill-matched projects (eg. Haraway 2008b, 176), I argue for the critical urgency of both challenging the constitution of subjectivity itself and disputing the a priori exclusion of other animals from attaining some kind of ethico-political subject-status (Braidotti 2016). Mindful of the well- established role of narrative in the enactment of subjectivities (Vint 2007; McHugh 2011) and attentive to the emergence and proliferation of subject forms through the edible encounter (Bennet 2010; Turner 2014), I deploy the theoretical tools of ecofeminism, critical animal studies (CAS) and material ecocriticism to interrogate subjectivity by attending closely and critically to twentieth and twenty-first century Euro-American Anglophone science fiction (SF) stories about meat: “the most delegitimated subject 1 Following Midgley (1979[1995)], at times I use the word ‘animal’ for convenience to denote “animal other than human," “but it must never be forgotten that we have no clear basis for [this division]… Drawing analogies ‘between people and animals’ is, on the face of it, rather like drawing them between foreigners and people” (15).     Discovering the Lost Race Story: Writing Science Fiction, Writing Temporality This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The University of Western Australia 2008 Karen Peta Hall Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Discipline of English and Cultural Studies School of Social and Cultural Studies ii Abstract Genres are constituted, implicitly and explicitly, through their construction of the past. Genres continually reconstitute themselves, as authors, producers and, most importantly, readers situate texts in relation to one another; each text implies a reader who will locate the text on a spectrum of previously developed generic characteristics. Though science fiction appears to be a genre concerned with the future, I argue that the persistent presence of lost race stories – where the contemporary world and groups of people thought to exist only in the past intersect – in science fiction demonstrates that the past is crucial in the operation of the genre. By tracing the origins and evolution of the lost race story from late nineteenth-century novels through the early twentieth-century American pulp science fiction magazines to novel-length narratives, and narrative series, at the end of the twentieth century, this thesis shows how the consistent presence, and varied uses, of lost race stories in science fiction complicates previous critical narratives of the history and definitions of science fiction. In examining the implicit and explicit aspects of temporality and genre, this thesis works through close readings of exemplar texts as well as historicist, structural and theoretically informed readings. It focuses particularly on women writers, thus extending previous accounts of women’s participation in science fiction and demonstrating that gender inflects constructions of authority, genre and temporality.

Indeed, over the past five decades Rolston has not only developed and defended one of the most comprehensive and recognizable positions in eco-philosophy, but he has also used it to address some of the most difficult and challenging issues that environmentalism in the modern era has had to face. It should come as no surprise, then, that the appearance earlier this year of his A New Environmental Ethics1 represents both the culmination of a professional lifetime of dedication to the discipline that he helped to create, as well as a guidepost out ahead of those of us who have only recently ventured into the territory that he began to explore so many years ago. Readers familiar with Rolston’s work will quickly recognize that A New Environmental Ethics is at one and the same time both a familiar and a novel text. On the one hand, it straightforwardly presents most of Rolston’s now well-known positions in environmental ethics, positions on things such as the intrinsic value of organisms and the ethical priority of ecological wholes that have changed fairly little over the course of his writing.

Peter Singer’s Answer: Animal Liberation Parts I & II (two papers) PART I Lesley McLean University of New England, Armidale NSW Australia Email address: [email protected] Between the Species, IX, August 2009, http://cla.calpoly.edu/bts/ Abstract In this paper and the next I discuss Peter Singer’s approach to answering the question of how one ought to live with nonhuman animals. In the first paper I situate Singer’s work within the larger historical context of moral concern for animals, looking at previous public consensus on the issue, its breakdown and its re-emergence with Singer in the 1970s. In the second paper, I take a closer look at Singer’s highly influential book, Animal Liberation (1975), and argue that as activist literature, his chapter on animal experimentation for example can be seen as morally persuasive in ways other than simply as an example of (the consequences) of speciesism. How I do this is to place Singer’s work side by side that of 19th century activist Francis Power Cobbe’s, in particular her pamphlet Light in Dark Places (1883), and examine their work against the criticisms from scientists defending the practice of animal experimentation. Animal Liberation was first published as a review essay in The New York Review of Books (NYRB) and two years later, in 1975, as a full-length book published by the New York Review.
