Communication with Peers Please observe all rules regarding appropriate student conduct in http://www.wlac.edu/academics/pdf/WLAC_Catalog_Policies.pdf. About this English 101 class... Q: What will we be doing in this class? A: Here in English 101, College Reading and Composition I, you will be learning to write a 7-10 page college research paper. In this paper, you'll support your thesis (overall opinion) about this specific question: What is the nature--the essence--of the kind of love that exists between two people who meet and become significant others or spouses, and how should it be expressed to make these relationships endure? To support your thesis, you will quote and interpret ... 1. Passages from famous songs, poetry and short stories, 2. Statistics and surveys from credible sources, 3. Expert opinions, and 4. Relevant anecdotal information, which can include your own story and your parents' and grandparents' story about the topic. Of course, in any research paper, you also need to counter an antithesis (opposing opinions to your support for your thesis). You will need to anticipate- -and rebut (argue against)--any argument that opposes your support for your thesis. For example, if I argue that people should be from the same culture and racial group to make their relationship endure, then I will need to argue against the opposing opinion: that culture and racial group do not matter. Q. What textbooks do I have to purchase for this class? A. All of our Class Texts are free online, and are in the Syllabus except for our textbook. Our textbook for this class is THIS LITTLE BOOK about How to Write a College-Level Essay by Nuala Lincke-Ivic. It will be available in the West Bookstore by the end of the fourth week of the semester, and you will need to purchase it then. It contains a lot of information that we will require for this class. And ... one hundred percent of the money you use to purchase THIS LITTLE BOOK (minus production costs) will be distributed to an office at West Los Angeles College or to a charitable organization--with the request that it be used to assist students in financial need. Follow all directions. 2. Use Verdana font in size 14, black type. (In research papers, we use Times-New Roman, 12 point black type, but for convenience in an Internet discussion forum, we use a larger type and font.) 3. Demonstrate that you have read, studied and pondered (thought deeply about) class texts. 4. Observe MLA format carefully, using the Purdue MLA OWL and class discussion directions as guidelines. 5. Do not have distracting errors in your posting. Run a spell/grammar check and proofread carefully, so there is no obviously awkward phrasing or other careless errors: word “I” is upper case; initial capital letters begin all sentences, proper nouns (names, titles) are capitalized, and there are no spelling errors. • Hakuin on Kensho: the Four Ways of Knowing/Edited with Commentary by Albert Low.—1St Ed
ABOUT THE BOOK Kensho is the Zen experience of waking up to one’s own true nature—of understanding oneself to be not different from the Buddha-nature that pervades all existence. The Japanese Zen Master Hakuin (1689–1769) considered the experience to be essential. In his autobiography he says: “Anyone who would call himself a member of the Zen family must first achieve kensho- realization of the Buddha’s way. If a person who has not achieved kensho says he is a follower of Zen, he is an outrageous fraud. A swindler pure and simple.” Hakuin’s short text on kensho, “Four Ways of Knowing of an Awakened Person,” is a little-known Zen classic. The “four ways” he describes include the way of knowing of the Great Perfect Mirror, the way of knowing equality, the way of knowing by differentiation, and the way of the perfection of action. Rather than simply being methods for “checking” for enlightenment in oneself, these ways ultimately exemplify Zen practice. Albert Low has provided careful, line-by-line commentary for the text that illuminates its profound wisdom and makes it an inspiration for deeper spiritual practice. ALBERT LOW holds degrees in philosophy and psychology, and was for many years a management consultant, lecturing widely on organizational dynamics. He studied Zen under Roshi Philip Kapleau, author of The Three Pillars of Zen, receiving transmission as a teacher in 1986. He is currently director and guiding teacher of the Montreal Zen Centre. He is the author of several books, including Zen and Creative Management and The Iron Cow of Zen.

Yankee Beemers Motorcycle Club News May 2016 — Goulds and Frosty FIRSTHAND ride reports Cover : Savant of Roads Dana Lewis shows the way to Goulds Sugarhouse His LARGEST group of Followers EVER ! 2 Iron Butt Association RoyJackson’s Iron Butt Memorial 1000 1000+ Miles in 24 Hours ( ALL IN Little Rhody ) Back a few years while looking at the Iron Butt Web site I came across info on this ride. I had just done the MM 1K two years earlier and was feeling like it was time to do another Sad- dle Sore 1000. I contacted Howard Entman to get the info on doing this ride. The following is a brief note of the ride and its history. Each year the lives of many fellow motorcy- cle riders and loved ones are cut short. In their memory, a group of the World’s Toughest Rid- ers will participate in a Saddle Sore 1000 on one of three weekends, September 22-23, September 29-30, or October 6-7. We hope to have rider’s participation in all 50 states, in all of the Canadian provinces, and in several countries around the world. These dates were selected because the weather across the world is generally good—not to hot and not to cold. The IBA (Iron Butt Association will issue a special certificate for this event. To special- ly honor our fallen brethren, we’re asking each of you to find one of your motor- cycle friends who is not and IBA member to ride the Saddle Sore with you. This will give you the opportunity to mentor the ‘newbie’ in the skill of route planning, navigation, hydration, and ATGATT before and during the ride.
