Q: What will we be doing in this class? A: Here in English 101, College Reading and Composition I, you will be learning to write a 7-10 page college research paper. In this paper, you'll support your thesis (overall opinion) about this specific question: What is the nature--the essence--of the kind of love that exists between two people who meet and become significant others or spouses, and how should it be expressed to make these relationships endure? To support your thesis, you will quote and interpret ... 1. Passages from famous songs, poetry and short stories, 2. Statistics and surveys from credible sources, 3. Expert opinions, and 4. Relevant anecdotal information, which can include your own story and your parents' and grandparents' story about the topic. Of course, in any research paper, you also need to counter an antithesis (opposing opinions to your support for your thesis). You will need to anticipate- -and rebut (argue against)--any argument that opposes your support for your thesis. For example, if I argue that people should be from the same culture and racial group to make their relationship endure, then I will need to argue against the opposing opinion: that culture and racial group do not matter.
