2020 Spring Commencement Program (PDF) CommencementSpring 2020 UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN–MADISON Dear Graduates, t the close of each spring semester, I have the privilege of welcoming our newest Agraduates to the worldwide family of Badger alumni and telling them how proud I am of their achievements. This year, that tradition takes on special meaning. I am humbled by the resilience and grace I have seen from the members of this class as you have stayed focused on finishing your degrees despite months of upheaval and uncertainty. Students come to UW–Madison because they want to be deeply engaged in solving complex problems out in the world, but it is rare for a graduating class to immediately confront a problem that impacts all of humanity. The Class of 2020 faces the challenge of dealing with this pandemic and helping to build a future that will prevent such tragedies. I am confident that you are well- equipped for this challenge. This class has voted in record numbers, helped to perform more than 30,000 hours of community volunteer work, and made UW– Madison the #1 university in the nation for Peace Corps volunteers. Among you are Rhodes Scholar finalists, national champion athletes, inventors, entrepreneurs, and dedicated students who have demonstrated a commitment to bringing this nation and our world to a better place. We are at a moment of great uncertainty, but one thing is clear: Our world will change permanently because of this global shared experience, and we all need to work to make sure it changes for the better. Your diploma from this great public university tells the world you’re ready and able to be a part of that effort. That’s the Wisconsin Idea—a commitment to use your knowledge, skills, and ideas to improve people’s lives—and I hope you will carry it with you throughout your lives. I want to thank each of you for the contributions you’ve made to the university during your time with us. And I’d also like to thank the families and friends whose love and support have carried you through both the good times and the bad. The pandemic may have taken away our in-person commencement celebration this spring, but it can’t take away your extraordinary accomplishments. From the point of view of Husserl’s ontology, the traditional mind-body problem looks hopelessly simplistic. Not only must we deal with relations between mind— indeed consciousness, soul [psyche], spirit [human personhood]—and body. We must address different aspects of the body itself as living organism and as material thing.
