www.planbee.com The Great Fire started in in London, in Thomas Farriner’s bakery. It spread throughout the city to the west of Pudding Lane and destroyed more than 13,000 houses and 84 churches.

www.planbee.com The fire spread quickly because the houses were made of timber and straw and were close together. There were also lots of warehouses with materials like oil and cloth that were very flammable. There were also no fire engines in 1666. People tried pulling houses down to stop the fire but the wind made it spread too quickly.

www.planbee.com We know a lot about the Great Fire from ’ diary. His diary describes what the fire was like, what he did during the fire and what important people like the Lord Mayor and the king did to try and stop the fire.

We also know about the fire from objects that have been found from the time and from paintings and pictures.
