.Special Announcement: Auckland Car Club Race Series – New Race Entry Close Off & “Payment on the day”. Hi all, We are now three rounds into our 6 round Summer Series. As you would have all seen, we have had a large number of entries at our meetings. Please appreciate that there is a lot of “behind the scene” work that goes on to ensure that we have a well-run event. To ensure that we have sufficient time to administer all of our entries, the new close off time will be WEDNESDAY 4.00 PM prior to the race date. Late entries can be made after this date but these will incur a late entry fee. Recently, we have experienced lengthy documentation at our meetings. Part of this is due to some of our members making payment on the day (race day). It is a requirement that payment for the meeting is made at the time that your entry is done on - line. You are also able to carry out your paperwork on the Thursday night before the meeting at the Auckland Car Club clubrooms along with payment if necessary. Effective for our November 2014 meeting, any late payments that are made on the day will now incur a late payment fee of an additional $30.00. Please note, this can be avoided by simply paying for your entry when you enter on line (N.B the new close off day Wednesday 4.00 pm). We understand that there may be circumstances that require late payment but it is imperative that we process our documentation in a timely manner. We thank you in advance for your assistance/cooperation with this. Kind regards, Steve Melhuish, Race Chairman Auckland Car Club.

AUCKLAND CAR CLUB HEIMGARTNER REPORT

Taupo motorsport park is three and a half hours drive from Auckland slap bang in the middle of the North Island. From the outset it looked like a good weekend to practice wet weather driving! Some real Australian talent here to race. Shane Van Gisbergen, Tim Slade, Steve Owen, Jack Perkins and Paul Morris.

Johnny Reid, Murphy and the usual top NZ selection were here also. Paul Morris flew in with his family, our crew arrived with the car and we all settled in on Friday. Dad bought some new pit garage partitioning which looked very pro with all our sponsors’ logos and yellow and black theme. Taupo Motorsport park was built to run the A1GP series, so is a good quality venue. It is 3.4km long with a challenging infield and a long fast straight leading into a sharp 90 degree turn and a chicane. It’s a track you either love or hate, usually starting with hate and turning to love once you master it. I like it and hold the lap record here. SATURDAY We had a busy Saturday with two practices, qualifying for both drivers and a race. Practice went well with Paul and I getting up to speed with the car and track. Paul’s qualifying session went smoothly but he deserved better than the 7th spot out of the co-drivers. Next up was my go, I went out first on used tires to get my eye in then came in and put new tires on. I managed to qualify on pole by 2 tenths. The car felt fantastic and the whole team was buzzing.

RACE 1 Race 1 was a dry 30 lap race with Paul starting the car from 7th on the grid. He did a good job and managed to hand the car over in P7 after a fairly good driver change. I had to race hard to close some massive gaps and managed to get to P3 before the flag.

SUNDAY Race 2 The weather was much worse, with showers coming and going making things interesting. I started the race on wets from the front row alongside Shane Van Gisbergen. The track almost straight away started to dry up! I started to struggle 5 laps in when my tyre pressures got to high so we made the decision to come in early and change to dry’s. This would prove to be a good move as a few laps later everyone else came in for tyres as I blasted around on dry’s affectively putting me 3rd. I handed over to Paul and he set off. He just had to conserve as we had a big lead over 4th, we crossed the line for our second 3rd for the weekend!

Race 3 Race 3 saw Paul starting the car off the front row in damp conditions. We got only 1 lap in until it got too wet for slicks and we were forced to pit for wets. Because of a delay this race was only 26 laps long, 20 short of the full distance. Paul did a great job and handed the car over in 8th where we had a slow pit stop due to an air pressure problem with our rattle guns that put us back to 10th. I managed to fight my way back to 7th and had a good battle with Murphy for 6th. By race end I still had a very drivable car whereas most others were really struggling. If we had gone the full race distance I am confident that we would have had a podium again but that wasn’t to be the case.

CONCLUSION Overall a good weekend we showed we had the pace to win in some hot company, we just needed to put it all together. Paul did a fantastic job every time he hopped into the car in some very challenging conditions. The team and I are excited about the promise we showed in the weekend and can’t wait for Hampton Downs in 5 weeks’ time, where hopefully we can get closer to that top step.

Next up is Bathurst in 12 days. Better get on the simulator big time! Cheers Andre

Hampton Downs 1 + 2 November

Paul and I flew into Auckland airport on Thursday on a very delayed flight, due to an electrical storm over Auckland, at 1.30am in the morning. I spent Thursday in a daze sitting in on meetings which will determine what and where I race next year. I guess most drivers go through this annual ritual. Thank God I didn’t bin the car at Bathurst! Friday was set up at Hampton Downs and meeting my NZ team again. My guys here are real nice, they do this as a passion more than for the modest pay they get. Always seem happy to give 100% to whatever confronts them. Friday night spent with a sponsor’s customers and on the way back to Hampton the old Ford Mondeo Dad keeps here for me blew up at Bombay, another 1.30am late night followed! Weather promised to be overcast and mostly fine. One of my sponsors, Stuart Moulding from Civlltrain, is an expert weather forecaster and we get detailed local forecasts for each weekend. If Stuart says it’s going to be wet we buy more wets(tyres).

Saturday We had two practice sessions, qualifying and a race in one day so was really busy. The practices went smoothly with the team making changes to the car to suit the track. The track had seemed to lose grip since our last visit so previous data wasn’t much use to us. Qualifying was a mixed bag with Paul qualifying 9th and me 2nd. We had one 40 lapper race on Saturday afternoon where we started off the front row next to Shane van Gisbergen. This was a no fuel stop race so only had to do one pit stop for the driver change. Got a good start and was battling for the lead, my car was really good, almost too good in the first few laps. I used old tyres for this race to save the new ones for longer stints, so it wasn’t long before my tyres gave up the ghost. Shane had started with lower tyre pressures, so he struggled at the start but came on strong as mine fell off. I battled on for a few more laps then decided to settle into a comfortable 2nd. The driver change went to plan, but needed to be a bit faster, as we lost a position to Murphy. We always have an issue with our size difference which slows the driver change. Paul did a great job in the second half and brought the car home in a credible 3rd.

Sunday We had two longer 60 lap races that involved a fuel stop and driver change. We had a different strategy for this race with when we were going to pit. On the formation lap we came in just as the race went green and fuelled up. This saved us getting caught up in the first lap dramas plus the first lap is always 3-4 seconds slower then a flying lap. Paul went out and had clean air and brought the car into the pits for the driver change in a good position to hand over to me. We managed circulate and finish in 3rd again our fourth 3rd out of five races. The last race of the weekend was a 60 lapper as well with fuel stop and driver change. You start the race from points over the weekend we were 3rd overall at that stage so that’s where we started. We had another strategy with the fuel for that race which would unravel in the later stages of the race. Paul started the race and settled into 4th place nicely for his stint. We came in on lap 27 and did a driver change. Due to a bad exhaust leak Paul was light headed and stumbled when getting out causing confusion and the car to stall which added an extra 25 seconds in pit lane. Once a hot race car stalls, the fuel supply in the fuel rails evaporates and the car won’t start easily, a very stressful situation as you sit there desperately trying to get the car to fire up. We came out in 4th position again but the plan was to come out in a clear first place at this stage, as we still had a fuel stop to complete. I managed to get a gap to the cars behind but the cars ahead were too distant to close on. On the last lap we pitted for fuel as planned and went on to finish a disappointing 7th. Those 25 seconds would have made our novel strategy a success but as they say, that’s motorsport!

Conclusion Overall not a bad weekend, two 3rds is still a good achievement but as usual there are always things that could have gone better. We remain in 3rd place overall. For next round we definitely need to sort out the exhaust leak as both me and Paul struggled from inhaling the gasses which ultimately must have affected our performances. I’m off to Highlands in Queenstown on Thursday for the Highland 101 in a GT3 Porsche which should be exciting. Following that it’s Puke for the final endurance round on 29/30 November.

A big thank you to those of you who responded to the poster, calendar, name on the car deal. Your names are all nicely visible on the car, hope you visit to see for yourself. I still have 3 packages for sale at $175 to help cover my tyre costs so please give it some thought and contact Dad, [email protected] All the best Andre

AUCKLAND CAR CLUB JONO LESTER BLOG

With two rounds down in the New Zealand Endurance Championship we’ve been up against it in the TFM Ferrari F430 Challenge. A combination of mechanical failures, ECU glitches and an accident on track made for the cliché of character building times for this new team, even if its driver has been around the block once or twice!

The first event at Teretonga signalled early that we would be outgunned by many of our rivals with a distinct lack of torque and top end, but we charged on to qualify 5th after missing much of testing with the aftermath of a cracked exhaust header, which melted critical parts in the engine bay.

Into the race and I was down to 10th by the opening corner; the nature of the rolling start seeing the 430 swallowed up by the competition. I clawed my way up to 4th by the 40- minute mark before being forced to pit and retire with the same header problem, this time on the other side of the engine bay!

The after-effects of melted coils and wiring were felt during the second round at Ruapuna a fortnight later, with gear selection issues, dead spots in the engine and power lag dogging our Friday practice programme.

With the car running clean for qualifying I ragged a solid time out of the car to qualify in 4th, and it was an absolute buzz to drive around the technical Ruapuna layout.

Not long after however, team boss Gerald Trass was an innocent bystander in the ‘curtain raiser’ 1hr race, being T-boned by another car and putting our 3hr race start in jeopardy.

The team worked their butts off to get us out on track and despite a 15 degree cocked steering wheel and absence of all front downforce (splitter), I handed over from a competitive 3rd under safety car early in the race. My co-driver Robin Gray did a solid job in his hour stint before I was back in to complete the final 100mins of the race, dragging us up from 12th to 6th at the finish.

The car wasn’t in good shape, and we had to make four pit stops along the way, but given its state immediately after the accident it was impressive that we made it at all! So for that, the lads all deserve a big pat on the back. When this issue goes to print we will have completed the final round of the Championship at Timaru, where I will team up with my good mate Hugh ‘ace’ Gardiner on a tight layout that should suit our nimble F430 Challenge. From there, it’ll be top secret new car shakedown testing before my first visit to Highlands Motorsport Park for the Australian GT 101. I can’t wait to check out Tony’s highly touted masterpiece! I’ll cover all of this next month, and thank you all for reading once again. Remember to follow the progress on website, www.jonolester.com and associated social media on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Instagram.

Stay safe out there on the roads team, Jono Lester

AUCKLAND CAR CLUB LEADFOOT FESTIVAL

Leadfoot Festival - It's On! 6-8 February 2015

The Leadfoot Festival is a unique weekend bringing together a mix of classic cars, vintage motorcycles and motorsport legends. Limited tickets will be offered to the general public with an invitation to Rod Millen’s private grounds at Leadfoot Ranch. The 150 acre, ocean- front estate in Hahei on the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula features a long driveway that winds through the property designed to be the perfect hill climb.

Guests will be given one of a kind experiences featuring unparalleled access to the drivers, pits and racecars. The Leadfoot Festival is designed for men and women, boys and girls. Visitors dress in period style clothing to step back in time making the Leadfoot Festival an incredible family experience and a true celebration of motorsports and all things automotive.

The selection of machinery on Leadfoot Ranch will include a spectacular array of the world’s finest competition cars and motorcycles. From classic formula and road race cars to off-road machines and motorcycles, the Leadfoot Festival attracts drivers, riders and race vehicles reminiscent of many eras in an enthusiastic display of speed, style, sound, smell and colour. Rod Millen personally hand selects championship racers from around the world to receive the coveted invitation to participate in the Leadfoot Festival. A collection of static celebrated vintage cars and bikes will line areas of the paddocks to complete the weekend.

Rod Millen has spent his motorsports career traveling around the world gaining inspiration for his dream of the ultimate hill climb driveway. The Leadfoot Festival is an exceptional weekend of motorsports motivated by Millen’s involvement in hill climbs like Pikes Peak and the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The event was initially intended to celebrate Rod’s 60th birthday in March of 2011. The first Leadfoot Festival was a very fun and successful private affair for several hundred people. After the completion of the event, the businesses of Hahei, Motorsport clubs around New Zealand and the general public asked Rod to consider making it a public event.

After great thought and consideration to the effort required in creating an annual event for thousands instead of hundreds, Rod and his wife Shelly feel they are up to the challenge. It is also very important and dear to their hearts to support the township of Hahei and feel strongly this event will do just that.

Rod has been hard at work creating the perfect hill climb driveway and continues to improve and expand the property. The event is a true celebration of racing heritage and all things motorsports.

For a more in-depth report on Rod, the PDF below will explain much more about him and his career in motorsports.

INDYCAR DRIVERS HEADING TO USA PRO TOUR FINALE.

IndyCar again will have a strong presence at the 18th SKUSA SuperNationals this weekend in Las Vegas, a karting event that draws more than 500 drivers from across the globe and serves as the Superkarts USA Pro Tour series finale. Reigning Verizon IndyCar Series champion Will Power and race winner Marco Andretti headline the lineup of drivers in nine divisions. Power, who drove the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske to three victories and his first series title, will compete in the TaG Master division for the second consecutive year. He won a heat race and led laps in the final in his SuperNationals debut in 2013. Andretti has filled the vacancy in the S1 Pro Stock Moto division created when Scott Speed, who competes for Andretti Autosport in Global and is a three-time SuperNationals division winner, had a schedule conflict in Germany. Andretti, who began competitive karting at the age of 10, will make his SuperNationals debut though he's competed in the all-star karting event in Orlando, Fla., associated with the Performance Racing Industries trade show and several charity events. "It's going to be a great challenge, as there is some great talent there," Andretti told ekartingnews.com while training last week in Charlotte, N.C., with Power and Speed. "It's different muscles than IndyCar. It will be a great warm-up for (Juan Pablo) Montoya's kart race in Colombia on Thanksgiving weekend." Andretti, Helio Castroneves, reigning Presented by Cooper Tires champion Gabby Chaves and Sebastian Saavedra are scheduled to compete in the event in Bogota that benefits the Family Smiles charitable organization established by Montoya and his wife. Also entered in the S1 class are 2014 Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires championship runner-up Scott Hargrove, Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires competitor Matthew Di Leo, former Indy Lights driver Matt Jaskol and AJ Allmendinger, who competed in six Verizon IndyCar Series races in 2013 with Team Penske. Allmendinger will compete in the TaG Senior division, too. Also entered in the SuperNationals with IndyCar ties: • Former Indy car driver Richie Hearn, who won the 1995 Atlantic title, will compete in the TaG Master division. Hearn, who lives in nearby Henderson, Nev., won several national karting championships in the 1990s. • Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda competitor Colton Herta, 14, a former TaG Cadet Pro Tour champion, will compete in TaG Junior for Phil Giebler Racing. He's the son of Verizon IndyCar Series team owner and former driver Bryan Herta. • Former Indy car driver Enrique Bernoldi of Brazil will compete in the KZ2 division as will Indy Lights competitor Zack Meyer. • Drivers in multiple divisions represent Phil Giebler Racing and Jay Howard MDD. Both are former Indy Lights drivers (Howard won the 2006 title) and starters. Giebler, of California, was the 2007 Indy 500 Rookie of the Year. Howard, who has made nine Verizon IndyCar Series starts, recently was announced as an Indy 500 driver for 2015 with Herta's team.
