It is concerned with contemporary issues as well as our deeply rooted tradition of inquiry about the moral life. Our mission is to publish scholarly articles in the field of moral theology, as well as theological treatments of related topics in philosophy, economics, political philosophy, and psychology. Journal of Moral Theology is published semiannually, with January and July issues. The journal’s articles are open-access, available at www.msmary.edu/jmt. A NOTE FROM THE ISSUE EDITOR I am very grateful to all of the contributors to this issue who re- sponded so generously to my invitation to share their particular ex- pertise and theological perspective on the church and the world. Their good work has made this a rich collection of essays that ad- dress this fundamental theological question from a wide variety of interesting angles. This issue begins with an essay by William Cavanaugh who asks us to reconsider the conventional wisdom that the Second Vatican Council led the Roman Catholic Church in the United States to grow from a world-fearing, ghettoized sect into a church very much at home in American society. Using the town of Westphalia, Iowa (a utopian Catholic community established before Vatican II) as a focal point for examining the church/world relationship in the concrete, he argues for a more complex understanding than the conventional narrative of historical progress or Ernst Troeltsch’s categories of sect and church will allow. Laurie Johnston’s essay takes up the pressing question of how contemporary Christians should go about reading the signs of the times. She observes that since the Second Vatican Council, what the signs of the times are has been a matter of constant dispute as have the questions of how, by whom, and according to what criteria they should be discerned. Johnston illuminates both the difficulty and the necessity of reading the signs of the times, expanding upon Yves Congar’s wisdom that Christians must strive to live as pilgrims not tourists in the world. Drawing from historical and contemporary examples, she points to solidarity, experience in humanity, and hu- mility as keys to discernment. Moral theology and practical theology share much in common. Each of these specialties seeks (among other things) to explain how spirituality and the demands of discipleship should shape the way that Christians live in the world. Claire Wolfteich employs a practical theological method to provide a rich description of the reality of time-poverty that many women (and men) face today. She goes on to develop a compelling theology of time, teasing out the critical, coun- tercultural, and justice implications of Catholic teaching on labor, the Sabbath, and the domestic church. Two essays in this issue address the challenges of inculturation. First, David Clairmont and David Lantigua bring Catholic moral theology into dialogue with the comparative study of religion as they consider two specific contexts in which Catholics have grappled with questions about the status of indigenous people and their religious beliefs: Colonial Latin America and Post-colonial Africa. Their study illuminates new ways of thinking about the relationship between the gospel, natural law, and culture. Second, Ramon Luzárraga explores ii how the Christian faith inculturates itself with popular religious practices in Latin America and the Caribbean. He describes the com- plex process of discernment behind efforts to name and support ap- propriate forms of inculturated worship and practice. Tracey Rowland debunks superficial characterizations of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI’s theology of the church and the world. By offering a careful examination of the influences that shaped Ratzinger's thought, and by providing an attentive analysis of his work as a theologian, Rowland sketches a nuanced church/world theology that is neither neo-Manichean nor hostile toward the world. Rowland illustrates the consistency between Benedict XVI’s recent writings about the church and the world and Ratzinger’s earlier theo- logical work. Dialogue is an important dimension of theological work on the church and the world. Amelia Uelmen explores the possibilities and limits of dialogue between Catholics and people of good will who have profoundly different cultural assumptions. Uelmen’s essay cen- ters on a careful analysis of Cathleen Kaveny’s efforts to engage the thought of philosopher and legal scholar Joseph Raz. Uelmen sketch- es some of the methodological implications that emerge from her analysis of Kaveny’s work, focusing in particular on the limits of ab- stract concepts as a basis for building bridges across difference and the promise of personal narrative for dialogue. Finally, my own essay offers a review of two significant develop- ments in the field. First, I survey some recent work by ecclesiologists and moral theologians who integrate ethnographic research into their writing, and I assess their claims about the indispensability of field research. Second, I survey the work of theologians associated with the “Catholic Theological Ethics in the World Church” organi- zation, and I analyze some of the methodological claims being put forward by this movement. When I agreed to serve as editor for this issue of the Journal of Moral Theology, I must confess that I did not fully realize the magni- tude of the task. I would like to offer my thanks to everyone who contributed time and talent to this issue. I am particularly grateful to Samantha Deliso, who served as my graduate assistant at St. John’s University this year. While much of the Church’s history has shown that the institutional Church’s power relative to the state fluctuates as it has sought to retain political autonomy, it was in the centuries after the Enlightenment in which the most serious threats to the Church’s temporal security began to arise. Considering these alarming trends, the Second Vatican Council’s Declaration on Religious Freedom (Dignitatis humanae) revisited the Church’s relationship with the state in an attempt to secure the Church’s political security in the twentieth century and beyond. Primarily focused on the right to religious freedom, Dignitatis humanae’s authors construct an argument based upon individual claims to religious liberty that ultimately allows the Church to confer upon itself similar protections. Though Dignitatis humanae cedes political authority, it reasserts the Church’s primacy in religious considerations, as well as the disparate judgmental capacities of religious and secular authorities. In concluding, this article will argue that Dignitatis humanae’s significance is two-fold: (1) the Church relinquishes claims to secular governing authority, but (2) elevates its true source of political protection—its individual members—to the forefront of its concern. The original version in Spanish has undergone subsequent revisions that are not reflected in this translation.*** CHRISTIANITY AND MODERNITY: WHY THE LIBERAL DEMOCRATIC REGIME NEEDS THE CHURCH The comprehension of tolerance in pluralistic societies with liberal constitutions requires that, when dealing with non-believers and those of different [religious] faiths, the believers must understand that the dissent they encounter will reasonably persist . liberal political culture expects that the non-believers also understand the same thing in their dealings with believers.1 Jürgen Habermas The Christian faith is not a system. It cannot be portrayed as a finished and complete intellectual construction. It is a road and the characteristic of a road is that it is only recognized as such if one enters it, and begins to follow it.2 Josef Ratzinger, THE PLACE OF THE CHURCH 1. “The evangelistic task of the Church in all times and all over the world necessarily reverberates in the life of human society. The Church cannot be confined their temples, as God cannot be confined to the conscience.”3 This assertion, made by Pope John Paul II in Asunción during his only visit to Paraguay in May 1988, reasserted not only the position of the Church in relation to politics, and the Paraguayan State, but also against its policy of exclusion and repression of that time. The historical-political context in mid-1988 was delicate: the national- populist regime of General Alfredo Stroessner had hardened greatly, trying to further stifle the yearning for greater freedom of the people, desires that the Catholic Church echoed by taking on a role as the “voice of the voiceless,” which upset the dictator and his henchmen, who criticized Ramos-Reyes its intervention in political affairs.

The well-being of the individual person and of human and Christian society is intimately linked with the healthy condition of that community produced by marriage and family. Hence Christians and all men who hold this community in high esteem sincerely rejoice in the various ways by which men today find help in fostering this community of love and perfecting its life, and by which parents are assisted in their lofty calling. Those who rejoice in such aids look for additional benefits from them and labor to bring them about. Yet the excellence of this institution is not everywhere reflected with equal brilliance, since polygamy, the plague of divorce, so-called free love and other disfigurements have an obscuring effect. In addition, married love is too often profaned by excessive self-love, the worship of pleasure and illicit practices against human generation. Moreover, serious disturbances are caused in families by modern economic conditions, by influences at once social and psychological, and by the demands of civil society. Finally, in certain parts of the world problems resulting from population growth are generating concern. All these situations have produced anxiety of consciences.

    Anthony Burgess: Earthly Powers (1980) Rob Spence (Edge Hill University) Genre: Novel. Country: England. Earthly Powers was published in 1980, and marked a new stage in Burgess’s work. His major novels of the 1970s had been characterised by experimentation: from MF to Napoleon Symphony to Abba Abba, the impulse throughout the decade had been towards relatively brief novels with complex structures, often based on external sources: in MF, the work of Lévi-Strauss on Native American myth; in Napoleon Symphony on Beethoven’s Eroica symphony; and on an imagined meeting between Keats and Belli in Abba Abba. These novels were the most obviously experimental of this phase of Burgess’s career, and they contrast sharply with the relatively conventional Earthly Powers, which ranks second only to A Clockwork Orange in the amount of attention it has received. This novel too, uses external sources, but they are major public events – the first and second world wars, the holocaust, the Jonestown massacre. Burgess interweaves his fictional characters’ lives with those of the literary and artistic elite of the twentieth century and uses the historical framework as a backdrop both for the first person account of the life of his central character, Kenneth Toomey, and also as a way of grounding Toomey’s discursive ruminations on the nature of good and evil in a tangible reality. The novel is arranged in eighty-two chapters, echoing the eighty-second year of the narrator’s life, which begins in the novel’s celebrated opening sentence. The structure of the novel is straightforward, and mostly comprises chronological narration.

    The Journal of Private Enterprise 34(4), 2019, 33–53 Self-Government, Political Economy, and the Christian Tradition Zachary Jacob Gochenour James Madison University Chris Fleming George Mason University __________________________________________________________ Abstract This paper develops a theory of self-government that is specifically Christian, contrasted with both the liberal Enlightenment conception of self-government and other ways the term is commonly used. After defining and contrasting this Christian view of self-government, we explore how different schools of thought in social science can further our understanding of this conception, looking deeply at classical public choice in the Virginia school, behavioral public choice, and new institutional economics, specifically in the tradition of the Bloomington school.
