GANARASKA RIVER WATERSHED BACKGROUND REPORT For the Ganaraska River Fisheries Management Plan, Community Advisory Committee Prepared by: M. Desjardins, J. Lapierre and A. Smith March 2007 Ganaraska River Watershed Background Report EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Introduction The Ganaraska River Watershed has long been recognized for its clear cold water and excellent trout and salmon fisheries. Historically, the Ganaraska River supported healthy resident brook trout populations and migratory Atlantic salmon from Lake Ontario. In the early 1800s, dams near the mouth of the Ganaraska River blocked Atlantic salmon runs. By the 1870s, Atlantic salmon populations had collapsed in most Lake Ontario rivers. The role of Atlantic salmon as a top predator in Lake Ontario has since been replaced with stocked Pacific salmon and trout. The Ganaraska River ecosystem has seen a significant positive change since the 1940s when a series of studies and restoration projects began. Currently the Ganaraska River Watershed supports one of the largest wild rainbow trout runs in the Lake Ontario basin. In the past, fisheries management of the Ganaraska River was guided by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, Lindsay District Fisheries Management Plan. In 2000, the plan expired and the lead agencies responsible for fish and aquatic habitat management merged to direct the development of a new management plan. A Technical Steering Committee (TSC) was established to help guide the development of a background report and fisheries management plan. Since 1994, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) and the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority (GRCA) have collected information on the current state of the fisheries and aquatic habitat across the Ganaraska River Watershed. -

This system is hosted in-house and supports program registration, facility booking, memberships, point of sale and business reporting. Active Network also hosts the City's online registration and availability for Parks, Recreation and Culture programs and facilitíes. Active Network hosted software has reached its end of life and wíll no longer be supported beyond November 90,2017 . over the last two years, PRo (Parks & Recreation ontario) has provided opportunities for Ontario municipalities to coordinate their efforts and seek group pricing from the vendors in this category. -

co THE SUMMER RESORTS OF ONTARIO IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY By Roy 1. Wolfe I In the early decades of the nineteenth century, when settlement in Upper Canada was still in the frontier era, the back country, a few miles inland from the Lower Lakes, was still wilderness. This was pioneer country, and there could be as yet no thought of using land for recreation, 1 while the land itself had to be tamed. The rural settlers had two chief sources of enjoyment-liquor and religion. The former was in good supply (Anna Jameson in 1837 was struck by the vast number of taverns that lined the road between Toronto and Lake Simcoe) but it would be many years before there was a direct relation between liquor and the summer re~QJ Exactly the reverse was true of religion: if in recent years there seems to have been little connection between religion and the summer resort, in the beginning it was very close., The most enjoyable religious ceremony the settlers knew was the Methodist camp-meeting, which sup- plemented the work of itinerant preachers, and reached its fullest de- velopment in the 1820~s.The excitement of the camp-meeting, the hysteria and violent conversions/ had an emotional appeal that nothing else could bring to the barren lives of the isolated settlers. Not only the religious came, but those of few religious convictions,3 who derived enjoyment from the spectacle. Camp-meetings lasted as long as a week, and people stayed in tents at the camping-grounds, which thus came to have the appearance of many future summer resorts. -

Recommended management actions are based on scientific data collected as part of a forest inventory, as well as municipal, stakeholder and public input.
