The News from That Strange, Far Away Land: William Carlos Williams’ Indian Son(g) Graziano Krätli YALE UNIVERSITY 1. In his later years, William Carlos Williams entertained a long epistolary relationship with the Indian poet Srinivas Rayaprol (1925-98), one of a handful who contributed to the modernization of Indian poetry in English in the first few decades after the independence from British rule. The two met only once or twice, but their correspondence, started in the fall of 1949, when Rayaprol was a graduate student at Stanford University, continued long after his return to India, ending only a few years before Williams’ passing. Although Williams had many correspondents in his life, most of them more important and better known literary figures than Rayaprol, the young Indian from the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh was one of the very few non-Americans and the only one from a postcolonial country with a long and glorious literary tradition of its own. More important, perhaps, their correspondence occurred in a decade – the 1950s – in which a younger generation of Indian poets writing in English was assimilating the lessons of Anglo-American Modernism while increasingly turning their attention away from Britain to America. Rayaprol, doubly advantaged by virtue of “being there” (i.e., in the Bay Area at the beginning of the San Francisco Renaissance) and by his mentoring relationship with Williams, was one of the very first to imbibe the new poetic idiom from its sources, and also one of the most persistent in trying to keep those sources alive and meaningful, to him if not to his fellow poets in India. -

Here, looking back from the perspective of his 90 years, William Klein selects his favorite works, those that he considers to be the very best he has made over the course of his long career, in order to pay homage to the medium of photography itself. This book, appropriately titled Celebration, provides a tour of his most emblematic works, traversing New York, Rome, Moscow, Madrid, Barcelona and Paris, in powerful black and white or striking color. The book also includes a text by the author in which he reflects upon the photographic art and explains what prompted him to make this director’s cut, this exceptionally personal selection. A small-format but high-voltage volume, in page after page Celebration makes it clear why Klein’s achievement is one of the summits of contemporary photography. Born in New York in 1928, William Klein studied painting and worked briefly as Fernand Léger’s assistant in Paris, but never received formal training in photography. His fashion work has been featured prominently in Vogue magazine, and has also been the subject of several iconic photo books, including Life Is Good and Good for You in New York (1957) and Tok yo (1964). In the 1980s, he turned to film projects and has produced many memorable documentary and feature films, such as Muhammed Ali, the Greatest (1969). Klein currently lives and works in Paris, France. His works are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. -

Inspiration and the Oulipo Abstract In the Ion and the Phaedrus Plato establishes an opposition between technique and inspiration in literary composition. He has Socrates argue that true poets are inspired and thereby completely deprived of reason. It is often said that the writers of the French collective known as the Oulipo have inverted the Platonic opposition, substituting a scientific conception of technique—formalization—for inspiration. Some of the group's members aim to do this, but not the best-known writers. Jacques Roubaud and Georges Perec practice traditional imitation alongside formalization. Imitation is a bodily activity with an important non-technical aspect. Raymond Queneau consistently points to an indispensable factor in literary composition that exceeds both formalization and imitation but is inimical to neither. Sometimes he calls this factor "inspiration"; sometimes he speaks of "the unknown" and the "the unpredictable," which must confirm the writer's efforts and intentions. -

This study does not pretend to be comprehensive, but will atte~pt, within the areas designated by the titles of chapters 2, 3, and 4, to trace this development. The terms early 129ems and later poems will apply to the poetry finished before and after 1939, which was the year of the publication of The Map tl Love. A number of Thomas• mature poems existed in manu- script form before 1939, but were rewritten and often drastically altered before appearing in their final form. .,After the funera1° ' i is one of these: Thomas conceived the idea for the poem in 1933, but its final form, which appeared in The Map .Q! ~' represents a complete change from the early notebook version. Poem titles which appear in this study have been capitalized according to standard prac- tice, except when derived from the first line of a poem; in thes,e cases only the first word is capitalized. -

11 Ronald Mar and the Trope of Life The Translation of Western Modernist Poetry in Hong Kong Chris Song Abstract This essay examines the Chinese-language debut of Western surrealist poetry in Hong Kong and its effect on the local poetry scene through the work of Ronald Mar 馬朗, from the early years of the Cold War era onward. It traces the trope of poetry being “true to life” – as resistance to the surrealist influence – through evolving notions and experiences of Hong Kong identity over time, up to the present day in the post-handover era. Keywords: Chinese poetry, translation, Ronald Mar, Hong Kong, modern- ism, surrealism Twenty years since the handover of sovereignty from the British Crown to the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong society has known increasingly severe conflicts with China, fueled by animosity toward the mainland among the local population. Growing up in such a politically intense environment, Hong Kong youths feel that political and economic systems have conspired to leave them a hopeless future. As their demand for universal suffrage in the election of the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government was denied in September 2014, their anxiety finally broke into realization as the Umbrella Movement. Apart from responding through poetry to this large democratic movement, some young local poets perceived a need to redefine the “localness” of Hong Kong poetry. Though without much theoretical depth, their quest is quite clear: they believe that the localness of their poetic language lies, paradoxically, in the distance from external reality – a symbolic denial of the Umbrella Movement’s failed demands for universal suffrage, or any further realistic democratization, in Van Crevel, Maghiel and Lucas Klein (eds.), Chinese Poetry and Translation: Rights and Wrongs. -
Christian Bök (1966 — ) Is a Professor at the University of Calgary, and He Is the Author of Two Books of Poetry
Parliamentary Poet Laureate POETRY CONNECTION: LINK UP WITH CANADIAN POETRY Christian Bök (1966 — ) is a professor at the University of Calgary, and he is the author of two books of poetry. Crystallography (Coach House, 1994) has been nominated for the Gerald Lampert Award for Best Poetic Debut, and Eunoia (Coach House, 2001) has won the 2002 Griffin Poetry Prize, becoming a bestseller in Canada and the UK. Eunoia consists of five chapters (each of which tells a story, using words that contain only one of the five vowels). Bök has also published a book of critical writing, entitled ‘Pataphysics: The Poetics of an Imaginary Science (Northwestern University Press, 2001). Bök has created artificial languages for two TV shows: Gene Roddenberry’s Earth: Final Conflict and Peter Benchley’s Amazon. He has also exhibited artworks in galleries around the world. Poem for discussion: “The Perfect Malware” is a selection from an ongoing project, entitled The Xenotext, a transgenic artwork that Bök has been creating for the last 11 years at a cost of $120,000. Bök has written two poems that mutually encode each another (e.g., the word “lyre” in one poem translates to “rely” in the other, with L assigned to R and E assigned to Y). Bök has encoded the first poem as a sequence of DNA implanted into a bacterium. The lifeform then “reads” this poem, as part of its normal biological processes, and then the lifeform “writes” the second poem, encoding it into a sequence of amino acids that make up a protein. Bök is quite literally writing a living poem. -

The Meaning Revealed at the Nth Degree in Christian Bök's Eunoia
The Meaning Revealed at the Nth Degree in Christian Bök’s Eunoia Sean Braune hristian Bök is one of the foremost Canadian poets of the avant-garde. During a conversation between Bök and Darren Wershler-Henry for Brick, Wershler-Henry noted that Eunoia Cis the fastest selling book of poetry since Robert Service’s Songs of a Sourdough (119). The book’s success has left Bök baffled: “I wonder sometimes whether or not people are simply reading it because of its freakish character, passing by it like a carload of vacationers, slowing down to gawk at a two-headed calf by the side of the road” (Brick 120). Its success is indeed surprising because of the work’s experiment- al nature and avant-garde status. Experimental literature is typically not commercially fruitful, which makes the success of Eunoia all the more surprising. Perhaps Bök is correct when he compares his work to a “two-headed calf” because of its peculiar success. The book’s formid- able structural constraint requires a gloss or “skeleton key” to assist in approaching and decoding the work. This essay is intended to facilitate such an approach. The obsessive construction of Eunoia is influenced by the textual constraints of the French literary group called the “Oulipo.”1 The Oulipo was a “workshop” where many prominent French writers met to discuss the possibility of producing texts without the aid of “inspira- tion.” Rather than rely on a “lightning bolt” of inspiration to strike, the Oulipians invented mathematical constraints that could produce litera- ture with or without the aid of a writer.2 These constraints can be seen in the syntactical parallelism, internal rhyme schemes, and the inverse- lipogram3 of the book’s textual structure.
