It is an independent committee of experts responsible for assessing the biological status of species at risk in the NWT. The Committee uses the assessments to make recommendations on the listing of species at risk. The Committee uses objective biological criteria in its assessments and does not consider socio-economic factors. Assessments are based on species status reports that include the best available Aboriginal traditional knowledge, community knowledge and scientific knowledge of the species. -

Intro 1996 National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands The Fish and Wildlife Service has prepared a National List of Vascular Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1996 National Summary (1996 National List). The 1996 National List is a draft revision of the National List of Plant Species That Occur in Wetlands: 1988 National Summary (Reed 1988) (1988 National List). The 1996 National List is provided to encourage additional public review and comments on the draft regional wetland indicator assignments. The 1996 National List reflects a significant amount of new information that has become available since 1988 on the wetland affinity of vascular plants. This new information has resulted from the extensive use of the 1988 National List in the field by individuals involved in wetland and other resource inventories, wetland identification and delineation, and wetland research. Interim Regional Interagency Review Panel (Regional Panel) changes in indicator status as well as additions and deletions to the 1988 National List were documented in Regional supplements. The National List was originally developed as an appendix to the Classification of Wetlands and Deepwater Habitats of the United States (Cowardin et al.1979) to aid in the consistent application of this classification system for wetlands in the field.. The 1996 National List also was developed to aid in determining the presence of hydrophytic vegetation in the Clean Water Act Section 404 wetland regulatory program and in the implementation of the swampbuster provisions of the Food Security Act. While not required by law or regulation, the Fish and Wildlife Service is making the 1996 National List available for review and comment. -

PHOTOGRAPHY CREDITS All photographs included in this report were taken by the authors. 1 INTRODUCTION This project, funded by the Nova Scotia Species at Risk Conservation Fund, focused on two areas of high potential for rare plant occurrence: 1) the Polletts Cove and Blair River system in northern Cape Breton, covered over eight AC CDC botanist field days; and 2) the lower, non-tidal 29 km and selected tidal portions of the LaHave River in Lunenburg County, covered over 12 AC CDC botanist field days. The Cape Breton Highlands support a diverse array of provincially rare plants, many with Arctic or western affinity, on cliffs, river shores, and mature deciduous forests in the deep ravines (especially those with more calcareous bedrock and/or soil) and on the peatlands and barrens of the highland plateau. Recent AC CDC fieldwork on Lockhart Brook, Big Southwest Brook and the North Aspy River sites similar to the Polletts Cove and Blair River valley was very successful, documenting 477 records of 52 provincially rare plant species in only five days of fieldwork. -
Swing Through
Swing Through 20m Swing Through is an interactive agility garden that connects the user to Canada’s diverse landscape, as well as its major economic industry. The garden is a series of thirteen finished lumber posts that dangle from a large steel structure, creating “tree swings”. On the swings are climbing holds where visitors can use the holds to climb up and across the tree swings. Directly under the tree swings are thirteen colour-coordinated stumps that give the user an extra boost, if needed. The thirteen timber tree swings represent Canada’s ten provinces and three territories by using wood from the official provincial and territorial trees. Surrounding this structure of Canadian trees is a garden divided into thirteen sections displaying the native plants of each province and territory. Cameron1,* and Soren Bondrup-Nielsen2 Abstract - Coastal heathlands are rare ecosystems that provide habitat for rare species in Nova Scotia. Thirty-nine plots were established in Nova Scotia heathlands to assess plant community composition and occurrence of rare plants. Analysis of species richness and multidimensional scaling (MDS) revealed that heathland communities are varied, with differences between regions, inland and coastal sites, and between physiognomy types. Six rare plants occurred within 9 of 39 plots. Coastal heathland communities were found to have greater species richness and variation in community type than previously thought. Heathland rare plants are not restricted to any particular community type; rather, rare coastal plants in Nova Scotia occur in a wide variety of community types. -

A Recovery Strategy for Tall Bugbane (Cimicifuga elata) in Canada. Prepared by Brian Klinkenberg and Rose Klinkenberg for The Tall Bugbane Recovery Team and the BC Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection March 31, 2003 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Cimicifuga elata is a rare herbaceous species in the Ranunculaceae that is endemic to the Pacific Northwest of North America, where it is presently known from Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. In Canada it is known only from the Chilliwack River Valley drainage in British Columbia. Throughout its range, it occurs in small numbers in scattered populations in mature or old-growth mixed forests dominated by red cedar-hemlock forest with associated big-leaf maple. It occurs predominantly on north-facing slopes, where it occupies mesic to wet mesic sites near creeks or seeps, sometimes in close proximity to Mountain Beaver. The biological factors that limit the prevalence of this species include its occurrence in Canada at the northern tip of its range (climatic factors), its natural rarity in the landscape throughout that range, its occurrence in small, isolated populations, the lack of genetic exchange between populations, pollinator dependence, herbivory, and limited dispersal mechanisms. Anthropogenic factors that influence its abundance in the landscape include fire suppression and forest management activities. In assessing the potential strategies for recovery for this species, we have considered the various ecological principles and issues that may apply, such as metapopulation dynamics, conservation genetics, the ecology of rarity, influences of herbivory and the effects of pollinator limitation. We have also considered the historical occurrence of the species, and the factors that have influenced its current distribution. -

Recovery Strategy for Long’s braya and Fernald’s braya 2011 PREFACE The federal, provincial, and territorial government signatories under the Accord for the Protection of Species at Risk (1996) agreed to establish complementary legislation and programs that provide for effective protection of species at risk throughout Canada. Under the Species at Risk Act (S.C. 2002, c.29) (SARA), the federal competent ministers are responsible for the preparation of recovery strategies for listed Extirpated, Endangered, and Threatened species and are required to report on progress within five years.
