The result of a deep historical, astronomical and architectural study, it stands solemn and majestic to pay tri- bute to Jose Marti. Next to the plaza, is located Vicente Garcia Park, with more than 100 years from its construction. Plaza Martiana The work of the builder Luis Buenaventu- ra Ruiz, this park boasts the name of the Illustrious Son of Las Tunas. Within the same park is located the San Geronimo de Las Tunas Church, whose history is clo- sely linked to the history of the territory, from the sovereignty of Cueiba where a Catholic chapel was erected for the first time to worship the Virgin Mary. Crossing the avenue, you can find the Provincial Museum “Mayor General Vicente Garcia Vicente Garcia Provin- Gonzalez” (Francisco Varona Street btw cial Museum / Angel Guardia and Lucas Ortiz streets) former Government Palace, the most significant eclectic style building in the City. Sculpture route / 12 We also suggest Tour the Cornito: a must visit in Las Tunas, na- med after the creek that crosses the place; it was the birthplace of the poet Juan Cristobal Napo- les Fajardo, Cucalambe. It encompasses almost eight kilometers until it ends at the cattle fair stands, the rodeo, the amusement park, the zoo, the botanical garden of the city and in the end we find a cultural recreatio- nal center in the shade of a bamboo forest and more. Take the caldosa tunera: at the entrance of Las Tu- nas, if you visit it from the Cuban West, a dish that is famous all over Cuba is pre- pared: the Kike and Marina caldosa tunera (a tasty bro- th typical from the region) that has become a funda- mental recipe in the Cu- ban gastronomy traditions. Taste the tamal tune- ro: we like the tamales of tender corn wrapped in the same leaf of the cob. We season them well with chili peppers, garlic and onion, and we always put pork or pork cracklings. We differen- tiate it from other pro- vinces where they are made with coconut milk and wrapped in banana leaves. But undoubtedly the most liked are those of sweet corn made in its leaf. You can taste it in the restaurant La Esquina!!! We also suggest / 13 Places of interest Martyrs of Barbados Memorial House-Museum Founded in 1978 in what was the home of the Olympic sports- man Carlos Leyva, in La Tunas, the Martyrs of Barbados Me- morial Museum stands as a tribute to the victims of the fa- mous crime of Barbados, executed on October 6, 1976. In this aerial terrorist act 73 people died, including fencer Car- los Miguel Leyva González, and Leonardo McKenzie Grant.     Report of Summer Activities for TCD Research Grant Anmari Alvarez Aleman Research and conservation of Antillean manatee in the east of Cuba. The research activities developed during May-August, 2016 were developed with the goal to strengthen the research project developed to understand the conservation status of Antillean manatees in Cuba. Some of the research effort were implemented in the east of Cuba with the purpose of gather new samples, data and information about manatees and its interaction with fisherman in this part of the country. We separated our work in two phases. The first was a scoping trip to the east of Cuba with the purpose of meet and talk with coast guards, forest guards, fishermen, and key persons in these coastal communities in order to get them involved with the stranding and sighting network in Cuba. During the second phase we continued a monitoring program started in the Isle of Youth in 2010 with the goal of understand important ecological aspects of manatees. During this trip we developed boat surveys, habitat assessments and the manatee captures and tagging program. Phase 1: Scoping trip, May 2016 During the trip we collected information about manatee presence and interaction with fisheries in the north east part of Cuban archipelago and also collected samples for genetic studies. During the trip we visited fishing ports and protected areas in Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus, Ciego de Avila, Camaguey, Las Tunas, Holguin, Baracoa and Santiago de Cuba. Cuba has declared the Hurricane Alarm Phase today in seven provinces in the country, with 5.2 million people (46% of the Cuban population) affected. More than 1,130,000 people (10% of the Cuban population) are expected to be evacuated to protection centers or houses of neighbors or relatives. Beginning this evening, heavy waves are forecasted in the eastern part of the country, causing coastal flooding on the northern shores of Guantánamo and Holguín Provinces. 1,130,000 + 600 1,031 people Tons of pregnant evacuated food secured women protected Situation overview Heavy tidal waves that accompany Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale, began to affect the northern coast of Cuba’s eastern provinces today, 7 September. Materials and Methods: A study was conducted under field conditions, on a reddish Brown Fersialitic Soil of the Puerto Padre municipality, Las Tunas, Cuba. A randomized block design was applied with five treatments (absolute control, fertilization with NPK and the Bradyrhizobium strains, ICA 8001, USDA 110 and GIE 109) and four replicas. The distance between replicas was 1 m and the seed had 98 % germination. During the cultivation cycle, the number of pods per plant, number of grains per pod, weight of 100 grains, yield in t ha-1 were evaluated and an economic assessment was made. Results: The lowest number of pods per plant was obtained in the absolute control, without differing from the treat- ment with NPK.

Marinello Vidaurreta". Universidad de Ciencias Médicas. Las Tunas, Cuba. RESUMEN Introducción: la historia de la Odontología es un instrumento necesario para comprender la esencia de la profesión. Objetivo: analizar la evolución histórica de la Estomatología en la provincia Las Tunas. Métodos: se realizó una investigación de tipo histórica en el periodo de septiembre de 2010 a julio de 2017. Se utilizó como fuentes primarias de investigación textos y documentos históricos consultados en la Biblioteca Provincial, Archivo Histórico Provincial y Oficina del Historiador de la Ciudad, así como entrevistas a estomatólogos y a sus familiares. Se consultaron 3 libros, 2 artículos en revistas y 12 documentos del Fondo del Archivo Histórico Provincial. Desarrollo: en los años antes del Triunfo de la Revolución, en la provincia solo existían 16 cirujanos dentales, los servicios estaban mal equipados y se limitaban al tratamiento de extracciones dentarias y urgencias. Actualmente la población tunera cuenta con 47 servicios estomatológicos y se han formado 1 706 profesionales y técnicos. Consideraciones finales: la profesión estomatológica en nuestro territorio ha devenido en franco desarrollo, lo que ha favorecido el incremento de la calidad de vida de la población y su satisfacción. ABSTRACT Due to the repercussions of fires, it is necessary to know the territorial particularities that favor their emergence and dispersion. Because of its meteorological characteristics, Las Tunas is a vulnerable province to the occurrence of fires. For this reason, this study intends to relate the occurrence and magnitude of fires with the geographical and meteorological conditions of Las Tunas and Puerto Padre municipalities in Las Tunas province, Cuba, in the period 2008-2012. For this purpose, 249 fires were analyzed along with the behavior of meteorological variables. There were found differences among the municipalities regarding the occurrence of fires, the areas affected and the factors related to the spreading. For the case of small fires, it was verified the relationship between meteorological variables and the area affected by fires, although the correlation values were not high. The variables with greater influence, as it was expected, were those related to the moisture of the combustible materials the accumulated of precipitations at 15 and 20 days before each fire and the relative humidity.

No ha sido la intención escribir la historia completa del período. Se emplearon los métodos de estudio de los documentos históricos (fuentes escritas) y los testimonios (fuentes orales) para corroborar y verificar las informaciones. Se analizaron, cartas, partes y órdenes militares, telegramas e informes. Todo ello permitió elaborar una síntesis que recoge algunos hechos de la historia de Las Tunas de 1952-1958 enriquecida con documentos de la época. Situation: Hurricane IKE penetrated in Cuba through its northeastern corner on the night of Sunday 7 September with 194 km/h winds registered at Velasco, Holguin; and 130 km/h at Moa, another Holguin township. As it struck Cuba’s northeastern coast, it carried winds of 195 km/h and higher gusts and a barometer of 945 mb. IKE strikes Cuba just one week alter another violent hurricane, GUSTAV wrecked havoc and spread destruction in Western Cuba, especially in the Special Municipality of the Isle of Youth and the province of Pinar del Rio. With IKE, hurricane winds and torrential rains were compounded by violent sea penetrations in Cuba’s Northeastern-most area. Enormous damages were caused by 6-meter high waves which penetrated almost one kilometer inland destroying everything on its path, including urban areas of the city of Baracoa. Hurricane winds downed thousands of trees, telephone and power posts and caused serious damages to housing and other buildings. Rains are torrential. At Palenque de Yateras, 138 mm were recorded in less than 24 hours. 1 The storm’s eye followed a westerly path and entered the Caribbean Sea at midmorning Monday, after attacking Camaguey Province with 209 km/h winds. At Puerto Padre, Las Tunas Province, a wind squall of 192 km/h was recorded this Monday morning. As it swirls westwards over the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea, IKE will probable gain further in organization and strength.
