Principles of Movement Control that Affect Choreographers’ Instruction of Dance Julia Fenton Preface The purpose of this paper is to inform choreographers of different motor control and skill learning principles that affect instruction of dance and choreography as well as provide a resource for choreographers to make rehearsals more productive. In order to accomplish this task, I adapted the information presented in three main texts, written by Schmidt and Wrisberg, Schmidt and Lee, and Fairbrother, in order for it to be useful to choreographers. I have included dance examples rather than sport examples in order for the choreographer to more easily relate to the information. The in-text citations in this paper were kept to a minimum in order for it to be read more easily. -
The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance
Gordon 1 Jessica Gordon 29 March 2010 Honors Thesis Everything was Beautiful at the Ballet: The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance During the mid-1860s, a ballet troupe from Paris was brought to the Academy of Music in lower Manhattan. Before the company’s first performance, however, the theatre in which they were to dance was destroyed in a fire. Nearby, producer William Wheatley was preparing to begin performances of The Black Crook, a melodrama with music by Charles M. Barras. Seeing an opportunity, Wheatley conceived the idea to combine his play and the displaced dance company, mixing drama and spectacle on one stage. On September 12, 1866, The Black Crook opened at Niblo’s Gardens and was an immediate sensation. Wheatley had unknowingly created a new American art form that would become a tradition for years to come. Since the first performance of The Black Crook, dance has played an important role in musical theatre. From the dream ballet in Oklahoma to the “Dance at the Gym” in West Side Story to modern shows such as Movin’ Out, dance has helped tell stories and engage audiences throughout musical theatre history. Dance has not always been as integrated in musicals as it tends to be today. I plan to examine the moments in history during which the role of dance on the Broadway stage changed and how those changes affected the manner in which dance is used on stage today. Additionally, I will discuss the important choreographers who have helped develop the musical theatre dance styles and traditions. As previously mentioned, theatrical dance in America began with the integration of European classical ballet and American melodrama. -

CHOREOGRAPHY BASICS By: Max Perry To choreograph an effective routine, a dancer will use several techniques to create a dance that will not only fit the music, but will feel good when danced. The tools we use as choreographers are knowledge of the dance components, a basic idea of phrasing music, and an idea of how the material is to be used (the dancers or organization or company, etc.). ______________________________________ POINTS TO REMEMBER: 1. “A body in motion tends to stay in motion”. There is an initial force required to put the body in motion. Every time there is a change in the directional movement, there is additional force required to make the change. Too many abrupt changes in direction are not as comfortable as letting the body flow in the direction it wants to go, then gradually slow before changing directions. This does not mean you should slow down before every turn - I am referring to energy output only! 2. Choose music that has a wide audience appeal. You do not want a piece of music that sounds dated. The song should sound good every time it is played. If you want artists to take notice, or a national release, the rule is if you hear the song on the radio, it is too late. These songs were recorded months ago. Major established artists do not need a dance. Never go for the obvious - choose a cut from the album that may be released as a single or use a newer artist - possibly an independent artist. 3. Choose material that has a wide audience appeal. -
The THREE's a CROWD
The THREE’S A CROWD exhibition covers areas ranging from Hong Kong to Slavic vixa parties. It looks at modern-day streets and dance floors, examining how – through their physical presence in the public space – bodies create temporary communities, how they transform the old reality and create new conditions. And how many people does it take to make a crowd. The autonomous, affect-driven and confusing social body is a dynamic 19th-century construct that stands in opposition to the concepts of capitalist productivity, rationalism, and social order. It is more of a manifestation of social dis- order: the crowd as a horde, the crowd as a swarm. But it happens that three is already a crowd. The club culture remembers cases of criminalizing the rhythmic movement of at least three people dancing to the music based on repetitive beats. We also remember this pandemic year’s spring and autumn events, when the hearts of the Polish police beat faster at the sight of crowds of three and five people. Bodies always function in relation to other bodies. To have no body is to be nobody. Bodies shape social life in the public space through movement and stillness, gath- ering and distraction. Also by absence. Regardless of whether it is a grassroots form of bodily (dis)organization, self-cho- reographed protests, improvised social dances, artistic, activist or artivist actions, bodies become a field of social and political struggle. Based on a 2005 British filmabout a shoe factory heir who enlists a drag queen to help save the family business, "Kinky Boots" will star the Tony Award nominee Stark Sands ("Journey's End," "American Idiot") as the scion Charlie and Billy Porter (Belize in the Off Broadway revival of "Angels in America") as the resourceful Lola. The show's book writer is Harvey Fierstein, who won a Tony for his book for "La Cage aux Folles" and was nominated in the category last season for the Broadway musical "Newsies." Ms. Lauper, a Grammy-winning pop icon of the 1980s, has written the music and lyrics for the production, which will have an out-of-town run in Chicago this fall. Jerry Mitchell will direct, and the lead producers are Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig. Winter 2000/2001 Vol. 4, No. 3 A PUBLICATION OF THE NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF THE ARTS FOR ALUMNI, STUDENTS AND FRIENDS N NOVEMBER 7, North Carolina voters overwhelmingly passed a $3.1 Obillion bond package for the state’s public universities and commu- nity colleges. The package includes funds to update and repair facilities most critically in need at the schools, as well as funds to build new facilities to handle enrollment growth. NCSA will receive $42.5 million in bonds including: > $2.25 million for an archives facility for the School of Filmmaking in order to properly store the collection of more than 25,000 original 35mm feature films; 1,500 live action and animated short films, documentaries and newsreels; 8,000 previews; and 4,000 video cassettes, laser discs and DVDs. It is the largest educational collection in the world. > $8.9 million for a new chamber music hall which will allow students of the School of Music to perform in the professional setting for which they are being trained. Currently, more than 100 concerts are performed annu- ally in Crawford Hall, a 70-year-old renovated high school auditorium. > $4.4 million for the renovation of the upper five floors of the Stevens Center in order to provide expanded facilities for NCSA’s Community Students assembled and marched to the Board of Elections to vote and to Music School. However, in the earlier decades of the twentieth century black women were daily deflecting slings and arrows thrown at them from all sides. Arising out of this milieu of adversity were Josephine Baker, Katherine Dunham, and Pearl Primus, performing artists whose success depended upon a willingness to innovate, to adapt to changing times, and to recognize and seize opportunities when and where they arose. Baker introduced her performing skills to New York audiences in the 1920s, followed by Dunham in the 1930s, and Primus in the 1940s. Although these decades resulted in an outpouring of cultural and artistic experimentation, for performing artists daring to cross traditional boundaries of gender and race, the obstacles were significant.
