    Analysis A “clean city”: the Olympic Games and civil liberties Chris Jones Introduction In 2005, the UK won the right to host the 2012 Olympic Games. Seven years later, the Games are due to begin, but they are not without controversy. Sponsors of the Games – including McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Cadbury’s, BP and, perhaps most controversially, Dow Chemical [1] – were promised “what is chillingly called a ‘clean city’, handing them ownership of everything within camera distance of the games.” [2] In combination with measures put in place to deal with what have been described as the “four key risks” of terrorism, protest, organised crime and natural disasters, [3] these measures have led to a number of detrimental impacts upon civil liberties, dealt with here under the headings of freedom of expression; freedom of movement; freedom of assembly; and the right to protest. The Games will be hosted in locations across the country, but primarily in London, which is main the focus of this analysis. Laying the groundwork Following victory for the bid to host the Games, legislation – the London Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Act 2006 – was passed “to make provision in connection with the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games that are take place in London in the year 2012.” [4] It is from here that limitations on freedom of expression have come, as well as some of the limitations on freedom of movement that stem from the introduction of “Games Lanes” to London’s road system.     Transnational consumption and circulations Degrowth: the history of an idea Timothée DUVERGER ABSTRACT Degrowth is a concept-platform with multiple meanings, and is shaped by five sources of thought: ecological, bioeconomical, anthropological, democratic, and spiritual. The word appeared in the 1970s, and imposed itself beginning in 2002 owing to the convergence between the criticism of development and the anti-advertising movement, initially in France but later across the European continent, beginning with Latin regions. In radicalizing ecological criticism, it connected and gave increased focus to numerous emerging alternatives in the margins of civil society. The symbol of degrowth, reused notably by the Parti pour la décroissance (PPLD). Degrowth is a social and intellectual movement born of the convergence between the criticism of development in southern countries, and critiques of consumer society in northern ones. Considering that economic growth is neither possible nor desirable, it denounces the concept of sustainable development, deemed to be an oxymoron. It is a concept-platform with multiple meanings, shaped by five sources of thought: 1- The ecological source, which affirms the primacy of nature; 2- The bioeconomical source, which accepts the limits of economic growth; 3- The anthropological source, which calls into question the uniformization of the world; 4- The democratic source, which re-legitimizes public debate; 5-And the spiritual source, which responds to the crisis of meaning in modern societies. The word degrowth was formulated for the first time in 1972 during a debate organized by the Nouvel Observateur, in which André Gorz (1923-2007) examined the relation between growth and capitalism: “Is global balance, which is conditional upon non-growth—or even degrowth—of material production, compatible with the survival of the (capitalist) system?” His reflections fell within the context of the debate on “zero-growthism,” which followed publication of the Club of Rome report calling for “zero growth,” in an effort to limit pressure on resources.

So states Kimberly Clark in her first ‘anti-haul’ video (2015), a YouTube vlog in which she lists beauty products that she is ‘not gonna buy’.i Since widely imitated by other beauty YouTube vloggers, the anti-haul vlog is a deliberate attempt to resist the celebration of beauty consumption in beauty ‘influencer’ social media culture. Anti- haul vloggers have much in common with other ethical or anti-consumer lifestyle experts (Meissner, 2019) and the growing ranks of online ‘environmental influencers’ (Heathman, 2019). These influencers play an important intermediary function, where complex ethical questions are broken down into manageable and rewarding tasks, projects or challenges (Haider, 2016: p.484; Joosse and Brydges, 2018: p.697).

McLaughlin Professor of Law, Fordham University School of Law Brand names; Civil disobedience; Culture; Democracy; Intellectual property Nearly 20 years ago, a prominent media studies professor, John Fiske, coined the term “semiotic democracy” to describe a world where audiences freely and widely engage in the use of cultural symbols in response to the forces of media.1 A semiotic democracy enables the audience, to a varying degree, to “resist”, “subvert” and “recode” certain cultural symbols to express meanings that are different from the ones intended by their creators, thereby empowering consumers, rather than producers.2 At the time, Fiske’s concept was revolutionary; it promised a complete reversal of the monopolistic hierarchy of the author and the presumed passivity of the audience in receiving meaning.

Much of po­ litical consumerist action navigates towards large and highly visible brands, which politi­ cal consumers reject or embrace. This chapter views a brand—the name and logo of an actor/object and their associated/recognized meanings—as a core symbolic asset of an or­ ganization. The chapter argues that such a symbolic resource brings both opportunities and risks. A brand increases its power if it is entwined in institutions, identities, everyday practices, discourses, values, and norms. Successful eco- or ethical branding can bring profits, legitimacy, and power to companies. At the same time highly visible brands are targets of negative media reporting and movement attacks, and thus they are vulnerable to reputation risks. Through a literature review, the chapter demonstrates how brands re­ late to boycott/brand rejection, buycott, discursive, and lifestyle political consumerism. The concluding discussion suggests topics for future research. Published by: The Department of Historical Studies, University of Toronto Mississauga Stable URL: http://jps.library.utoronto.ca/index.php/prandium/article/view/28581 Urban art, according to Lu Pan entails a sense of “illicitness that may either pass by unnoticed or disturb the predominant order.”1 In creating this art, the ‘writers’ as they call themselves, seek to subvert the perceived framework of power represented by the city, and create alternate spaces to contest these structures outside the state-sponsored scope. Urban art seeks to subvert and disrupt normative relations between producers and consumers, by creating a space of free exchange. Through this changing and re-appropriating of space, the graffitist challenges the “illusion of ownership” and draws attention to the unseen struggle between the individual and the institutions of the metropolis.2 Using the theories of Michel de Certeau and Georg Simmel to frame my analysis, I will examine the ways in which the works of London-based urban artist Banksy engage in this practice. In exploring the ‘alternate’ spaces that Banksy creates, I seek to demonstrate how his anti-consumer, anti-political works function as avenues to negotiate and re- conceptualize relations between the individual and the structures of power represented by the city. Michel de Certeau’s work, The Practice of Everyday Life is an exploration of the daily practices, or ‘tactics’ of individuals that utilize urban space in a unique or unconventional way.

    Culture Jamming: Ads Under Attack By Naomi Klein Bill Gates and Microsoft aren't the only corporate giants suffering a backlash against their superbrands. Last month, computer hackers invaded Nike's Web site in the latest protest against the company's alleged sweatshop practices, redirecting visitors to a site concerned with "the growth of corporate power and the direction of globalization." Similar rants have been directed at McDonald's--from the student who waved a sign with the arch logo at the World Trade Organization protest in Seattle to the axe-wielding vandal--now a cultural hero--who tried to thwart the opening of a McDonald's in the tiny town of Millau, France. For their brilliance at building their brands, the marketers behind the likes of Nike, McDonald's, Wal-Mart and Starbucks now find themselves at the center of journalist Naomi Klein's avowed "next big political movement" in No Logo: Taking Aim at the Brand Bullies from Picador/St. Martin's Press. Reporting everywhere from university campuses to garment factories in Third World countries, Klein depicts the encroachment of big-name brands on our daily lives, and the array of in- your-face counter-measures this has provoked among consumer advocates. One such measure is discussed in the chapter partially excerpted here: "culture jamming," the practice of parodying ads and hijacking billboards to drastically alter their messages. "Something not far from the surface of the public psyche is delighted to see the icons of corporate power subverted and mocked," Klein writes, offering up memorable examples of "adbusting" done to Absolut, Levi's, Ford, Exxon, Apple and others.
