Food Science and Quality Management www.iiste.org ISSN 2224-6088 (Paper) ISSN 2225-0557 (Online) Vol.14, 2013 Proximate Composition of Ten Types of Biscuits and their Susceptibility to Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Tenebrionidae: Bostrichidae) in Nigeria Abdulrasak Musa* Titilope Lawal Entomology Unit, Department of Crop Protection, University of Ilorin, P.M.B.1515, Nigeria *E-mail of the corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract Ten biscuit types namely Tea, Digestive, Butter Scotch, Cream Cracker, Coaster, Fibre Plus, Shapes, Gin-Gin, Cabin and Crunchy were examined for their proximate composition and susceptibility to Tribolium castaneum Herbst. The biscuit samples had proximate composition ranging from 4.9 - 5.5% moisture content, 8.6 - 12.0% crude protein, 3.4 – 4.8% ash, 15.4 – 24.0% fat, and 55.4 – 64.0% carbohydrate and 2.09 - 2.81% crude fibre. Assessment of the biscuit types for susceptibility test was based on percentage adult mortality, mean number of adult emergence and percentage weight loss. Results showed that there were significant differences (P<0.05) in the parameters studied. Fibre Plus biscuit had significantly (p<0.05) lower mortality of T. castaneum adults, higher level of adult emergence and the most weight loss of 53.0% as a result of insect infestation within 120 days after infestation. Results showed that the biscuits were susceptible to T. castaneum infestation particularly if not properly packaged or preserved. Apart from proper preservation, biscuits should be supplemented with protein-rich diets to meet the nutritional needs of consumers. WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT Programme Notes If Nick Park and co. at Aardman gradually established themselves as a sort of millennial plasticine Ealing, then surely ‘Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit’ is their diversion into Hammer horror territory. Aardman’s plunge into the daunting world of feature-length production had begun with ‘Chicken Run’ (2000), which set something of a precedent with its own co-opting of a broad, recognisable genre, on this occasion the wartime prison break drama, and the much-loved Wallace & Gromit followed suit with a good old-fashioned monster spooker. Ok, it tones down its terrors in favour of good old English standbys like garden fêtes, marrow-growing contests, and aerial dogfights, yet this in itself all shows a keen awareness of the frequently clichéd vision of Britain depicted in our genre fare, with emphasis often placed on class-system clashes (compare the respective foxhunter sequences in ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’, ‘The Tomb of Ligeia’, ‘The Plague of the Zombies’ and ‘The Final Conflict’, for example – our ‘proper’ horror films straying every bit as far from their fear focus and using traditional imagery to offer comment on wider issues). We probably have as many fictional ‘national treasures’ as we do real ones – for every Florence Nightingale or Mo Farah, say, there’s a ‘James Bond’ or ‘Sherlock Holmes’. An instant hit as soon as ‘A Grand Day Out’ took to the screens in 1989, both Wallace and Gromit leapt on to everyone’s list of praiseworthy favourites, consolidating their success with ‘The Wrong Trousers’ (1993), perhaps their defining half-hour, and ‘A Close Shave’ (1995). -

O. Aroyeun Crop Processing and Utilization Division, Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, PMB 5244, Ibadan, Nigeria. E-mail: [email protected]. Accepted 2 September, 2009 A study was carried out on the utilization of cashew kernel meals (CKM) in the nutritional enrichment of biscuit. The biscuits were prepared from blends of soft wheat flour (SWF) and cashew kernel meals (CKM). The different ratios of SWF to CKM used were (A) 100: 0, (B) 90:10, (C) 85:15, (D) 75:25 and (E) 50:50 respectively. The digestive biscuit (DB) bought at the open market served as reference sample. The different biscuits produced were nutritionally analyzed. It was observed that all the samples contained desirable proportions of protein (14.3 - 28.6%), fat (16.21 - 29.62%) and digestible carbohydrates (33.48 - 64.66%). Protein contents, fat, ash and crude fibers increased with increase in CKM. Sensory evaluation results indicated that all the biscuits had high sensory ratings for all the attributes evaluated. There were significant differences among all the samples and the reference biscuit (DB) at p < 0.05 in taste, colour and flavour while samples A and B were not significantly different in terms of crispness and texture from the reference digestive biscuit (DB). The general acceptability showed DB > B > A > C > D > E. Key words: Biscuit, cashew kernel meal, nutritional enrichment, utilization. -

Stopping the camera to move, add or remove something created an illusion that fooled the audience into seeing something possess its own motion. Early animations often considered as performances of visual trickery with an emphasis on movement. Animation has evolved over the last century from its early beginnings as trick films, developing as a central element to live action visual effects in the first few decades of the 20th century and as a form of animation in its own right. Throughout this evolution, stop motion has developed to utilise clay models and complex puppets in addition to everyday objects as a means to tell rich and compelling stories. With the rise of computer generated imagery (CGI), stop motion is no longer used as often for visual effects. However it continues to be explored for its visual qualities and artistic possibilities in feature films and animated shorts and these qualities help to make the case for the longevity of stop motion for years to come. -
