Press Release PRESS RELEASE For Immediate Release: June 16, 2020 Information Contact: Chad Houck, Chief Deputy Secretary of State, (208) 334-2852 Official 2020 Primary Canvass Conducted Boise, Idaho – Idaho Secretary of State Lawerence Denney, along with the other members of Idaho’s State Board of Canvassers, Idaho State Controller Brandon Woolf, and Idaho State Treasurer Julie Ellsworth conducted the official state canvass for the 2020 Primary Election. The canvass of votes is the official accounting of every ballot cast to ensure every vote is counted. “The coronavirus pandemic forced Idaho to conduct the May primary as an all-absentee ballot election,” said Secretary Denney. “I want to thank Idahoans for their patience with the unprecedented changes we had to make in our elections process. State and county election officials and staff put in long hours of hard work and pivoted quickly to make this election a great success.” The statement of vote, certified today by Secretary Denney, shows 335,037 Idahoans voted in the 2020 General Election — a turnout of 36.94% of Idaho’s 906,877 registered voters. This compares to the 23.0% voter turnout for the previous comparable primary in May 2016. Counties with the highest voter turnout, as a percentage of registered voters, were Idaho (61.60%), Custer (56.88%), and Butte (55.88%). Official election results, including county-by-county and historical data, will soon be available on the Elections Division page of sos.idaho.gov. ### ABOUT LAWERENCE DENNEY Lawerence Denney has served the people of Idaho since 1990. His public service began as a representative in District 13 and, following redistricting, he became a representative in District 9 until 2014. During that time, Denney served two terms as Majority Leader and three terms as Speaker of the House before successfully running for state office. He is currently in the second year of his second term as Idaho’s Secretary of State. ---end--- Phone: (208) 334-2852 │ 700 W. Jefferson St., Room E205 │ Boise, ID 83720 FAX: (208) 334-2282 │ P.O. • Legislative Branch
LEGISLATIVE BRANCH Bruneau Dunes Photo Courtesy: Mary Davis 138 IDAHO BLUE BOOK Legislative Branch The Idaho Legislature is responsible for translating the public will into public policy for the state, levying taxes, appropriating public funds, and overseeing the administration of state agencies. These responsibilities are carried out through the legislative process -- laws passed by elected representatives of the people, legislators. Since statehood in 1890, Idaho's legislators have enjoyed a rich and successful history of charting the state's growth. Much of that success can be attributed to the fact that Idaho's legislators are "citizen" legislators, not career politicians. They are farmers and ranchers, business men and women, lawyers, doctors, sales people, loggers, teachers. Elected for two-year terms and in session at the Capitol just three months each year, Idaho's citizen legislators are able to maintain close ties to their communities and a keen interest in the concerns of the electorate. The Legislature's Mission The Idaho Legislature is committed to carrying out its mission in a manner that inspires public trust and confi dence in elected government and the rule of law. The mission of the Legislature is to: • Preserve the checks and balances of state government by the independent exercise of legislative powers; • Adopt a system of laws that promote the health, education and well-being of Idaho's citizens; • Preserve the state's environment and ensure wise, productive use of the state's natural resources; • Carry out oversight responsibilities to enhance government accountability; and • Raise revenues and appropriate monies that support necessary government services.
