Adventures in Film Music Redux - Composer Profiles ADVENTURES IN FILM MUSIC REDUX COMPOSER PROFILES A. R. RAHMAN Elizabeth: The Golden Age A.R. Rahman, in full Allah Rakha Rahman, original name A.S. Dileep Kumar, (born January 6, 1966, Madras [now Chennai], India), Indian composer whose extensive body of work for film and stage earned him the nickname “the Mozart of Madras.” Rahman continued his work for the screen, scoring films for Bollywood and, increasingly, Hollywood. He contributed a song to the soundtrack of Spike Lee’s Inside Man (2006) and co- wrote the score for Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007). However, his true breakthrough to Western audiences came with Danny Boyle’s rags-to-riches saga Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Rahman’s score, which captured the frenzied pace of life in Mumbai’s underclass, dominated the awards circuit in 2009. He collected a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award for best music as well as a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for best score. He also won the Academy Award for best song for “Jai Ho,” a Latin-infused dance track that accompanied the film’s closing Bollywood-style dance number. Rahman’s streak continued at the Grammy Awards in 2010, where he collected the prize for best soundtrack and “Jai Ho” was again honoured as best song appearing on a soundtrack. Rahman’s later notable scores included those for the films 127 Hours (2010)—for which he received another Academy Award nomination—and the Hindi-language movies Rockstar (2011), Raanjhanaa (2013), Highway (2014), and Beyond the Clouds (2017).

  • Dennis Brain Discography
DENNIS BRAIN ON RECORD A Comprehensive Discography Compiled by Robert L. Marshall Fourth Edition, 2011 FOREWORD This is the fourth, and no doubt final, revision of the “Comprehensive Inventory by Composer” section from my book, Dennis Brain on Record: A Comprehensive Discography of his Solo, Chamber and Orchestral Recordings, originally published in 1996, with a foreword by Gunther Schuller (Newton, Mass: Margun Music, Inc.). Most of the additions and corrections contained in the present list were brought to my attention by Dr. Stephen J. Gamble who, over the course of the past fifteen years, has generously shared his discographical findings with me. Although many of these newly listed items also appear in the discography section of the recently published volume Dennis Brain: A Life in Music, co-authored by Dr. Gamble and William C. Lynch (University of North Texas Press), it seemed useful nonetheless to make an updated, integral version of the “comprehensive” inventory available as well. There is one significant exception to the claim of “comprehensiveness” in the present compilation; namely, no attempt has been made here to update the information relating to Dennis Brain’s film studio activities. All the entries in that regard included here were already listed in the original publication of this discography. The total number of entries itemized here stands at 1,791. In the original volume it was 1,632. All the newly added items are marked in the first column with an asterisk after the composer’s name. (It will be interesting to see whether any further releases are still forthcoming.) The entries themselves have been updated in other respects as well.

  • Music in the British War Film, 1945–1979
A Bridge Too Far? Music in the British War Film, 1945 ‒1979 MERVYN COOKE In his 2014 book Projecting Britain at War , Jeremy Havardi identifies four aspects of the national character which have been constantly promoted in British films concerned with the Second World War: chivalrous stoicism (the ‘stiff upper lip’), understated humour in adversity, amateurish improvisation, and pride in the indomitability of the underdog. 1 As usual in accounts of the British war movie, however, Havardi does not assess the crucial role played by film scores – which include some of the most famous in British movie history, now firmly lodged in the national consciousness – in helping to delineate these characteristics, beyond a few fleeting mentions of ‘stirring’ musical themes. This label and ‘rousing’ have always been by far the most common catch-all epithets associated with overtly patriotic film scoring, and they are also used repeatedly in the brief allusions to music in another recent survey of Second World War films.2 The present essay offers an assessment of scoring practices in a range of British war films from 1945 to the end of the 1970s, by which time the combat film in particular had grown moribund. It concentrates on the development of a distinctive martial idiom borrowed not only from the military but also from coronation music (which, somewhat ironically, is markedly Teutonic in its Meistersinger -like uplifting rhetoric and even in certain specific harmonic details), and action capers conceived in a spirit of almost comic-book schoolboy 1 Jeremy Havardi, Projecting Britain at War: The National Character in British World War II Films (Jefferson, NC: McFarland & Company, Inc., 2014), 6‒7.

Behind them, two doors. We start to hear a clamor from the other side. one of them signals that it’s time to open those doors, and when they do a herd of students bursts through and lunges up the stairs, grabbing for mezzanine seats to a ballet performance. they’re driven by that hunger, that passion, for art. to see it, to feel it, to be inspired by it and maybe to become artists themselves.
