“Sesame Street: Platinum All-Time Favorites” (1995) Added to the National Registry: 2014 Essay by Kathryn A. Ostrofsky (guest post)* Joe Raposo Original album cover Jeff Moss “Sesame Street,” which premiered in 1969 and is still producing new episodes 50 years later, is one of the most recognizable and beloved programs in the history of television. Its meticulously- researched curriculum and its memorable puppet characters have long been acknowledged to have been important factors both in “Sesame Street’s” popularity and in its contributions to American culture, but its music has been just as critical. As a musical comedy-variety show, “Sesame Street” has broadcast thousands of songs and released over one hundred albums, along with scores of singles and book-and-audio sets. Catchy melodies attracted preschoolers’ attention, repetitious song structures served as teaching tools, and professional performances rendered the children’s program entertaining for adults who controlled the dial. Meanwhile, releasing albums extended “Sesame Street’s” lessons beyond the broadcast hour and helped fund continued production of the show. “Sesame Street” reached nearly every American preschooler for decades, cutting across lines of ethnicity, region, and social class. Thus, although “Sesame Street” is rarely mentioned in lists of popular music, it is probable that more Americans can sing “C is for Cookie” than know most of the chart-topping hits of bygone years. The “Platinum All-Time Favorites” album is a compilation of recordings from “Sesame Street’s” first 25 years, released in 1995 by Sony Wonder on cassette and CD. It represents “Sesame Street’s” prolific output of broadcasts and recordings, which served as a common cultural experience for generations of American audiences. -
Transmedia Muppets: the Possibilities of Performer Narratives
Volume 5, Issue 2 September 2012 Transmedia Muppets: The Possibilities of Performer Narratives AARON CALBREATH-FRASIEUR, University of Nottingham ABSTRACT This article examines how the Muppets franchise engages with transmedia narratives, their stories moving fluidly between television, film, comics, the internet and more. Rather than highlight the complexity Henry Jenkins (2006), Elizabeth Evans (2011) and others associate with transmedia, an examination of the Muppets offers insight into a mechanism that allows for simpler coherent connection between texts. The Muppets’ ongoing performer narrative challenges the prevailing understanding of transmedia storytelling. As performative characters (singers, actors, performance artists), any text concerned with Muppets, even those in which they act as other characters, becomes part of an overarching Muppet narrative. A high degree of self-reflexivity further supports transmediality, as most Muppet texts contain references to that text as a performance by the Muppets. Thus the comic Muppet Robin Hood and the film Muppet Treasure Island continue the story of the Muppets as further insight is gained into the characters' personalities and ongoing performance history. Examining different iterations of the Muppets franchise illuminates the ramifications of performer narratives for transmedia storytelling. KEYWORDS Transmedia storytelling, franchise, narrative, Muppets, multi-platform For over fifty-five years the Muppets have been appearing in media texts. They began on local television but have spread across most contemporary mediums, with many of these texts part of the over-arching, ongoing Muppet story. This article explores an alternative framework for defining one form of transmedia storytelling. This model suggests a complication in the understanding of transmedia storytelling put forward by Henry Jenkins (2006) and Elizabeth Evans (2011). -

Making Music Grow since 1975 Notations Fall/Winter 2010 Barbara and John LoFrumento Establish A Program to Assist Autistic Students ASCAP CEO John LoFrumento and his wife Barbara, have established The ASCAP Foundation Barbara and John LoFrumento Award to support music and music therapy programs for autistic learners. This award, which was recently presented to the Music Conservatory of Westchester Music Therapy Institute, will enable the Institute to expand its music therapy program and provide weekly music therapy sessions to special needs students in the Eastchester, NY school district. Students will have the opportunity to work with music educators on songwriting and instrumental instruction. Music therapy uses the power of music in a focused way to accomplish growth, learning, healing and change. Elements of music such as repetition, form, dynamics, tempo and rhythm specifically address the learning needs of children with autism creating an environment of attention, creativity and expression. The ASCAP Foundation Barbara and John LoFrumento Award will make it possible for the Institute to reach out to those in the community who might otherwise not have an opportunity to experience music and its healing abilities. For those children, music therapy will make a significant difference in Barbara and John LoFrumento their lives by addressing important areas including communication and language development, socialization, emotional development and self expression, as well as helping to develop their musical skills and talents. The ASCAP Foundation Joe Raposo Children’s Music Award To honor his legacy, the family of Joe Raposo has established The ASCAP Foundation Joe Raposo Children’s Music Award, which will support emerging talent in the area of children’s music. -

He was the one who first asked us as children, “Can You Tell Me How to Get, How to Get to Sesame Street.” He taught us, “It’s Not Easy Being Green” and that “C is for Cookie”. Joe Raposo was the official composer for Sesame Street. He wrote his most famous composition in 1971, a song simply entitled “Sing”. It began in the mouth of Muppets and traveled the world, thanks to the Carpenters who decided to sing, “Sing”. They took it to a top-ten and Grammy Nomination. Since then, it’s been recorded over 50 times and sung by such a diverse group as Lena Horne, Gloria Estefan, Garth Brooks, and even Ben Stiller and Conan O'Brien. The song brings joy. The words are simple, but I challenge you to hear it sung without smiling, just a little: Sing, sing a song, Sing out loud, Sing out strong, Sing of good things not bad, Sing of happy not sad Sing, sing a song, Make it simple to last, Your whole life long Don't worry that it's not, Good enough for anyone Else to hear Just sing, sing a song. The song changed Joe Raposo’s life, propelled him from Sesame Street to international fame. But in 1988, he just wanted to get away from it all. -

Special attention will be devoted to work done while the Hensons lived in Greenwich, including scenes shot in town. Craig Shemin was a staff writer for the Henson Company for 14 years and is president of the Jim Henson Legacy, a non-profit organization devoted to preserving Henson's work. Among his credits: the script for the New York Pops concert Jim Henson's Musical World (Carnegie Hall), The Muppets Kitchen, The Muppets Character Encyclopedia, the Smithsonian's touring exhibition Jim Henson's Fantastic World, the Museum of the Moving Image's World of Jim Henson series and numerous video compilations for The Jim Henson Legacy and The Walt Disney Company. The program will be introduced by co-curator of Jim and Jane Henson, Creative Work, Creative Play Karen Falk. Biographical Note by The HistoryMakers® Children’s educational puppeteer Kevin Clash was born on September 17, 1960 in Turner’s Station, a predominantly black neighborhood in the Baltimore, Maryland suburb of Dundalk, to George and Gladys Clash. In 1971, at the age of ten, Clash began building puppets, after being inspired by the work of puppeteers on the Sesame Street television program, a passion that stuck with him throughout his teen years. His first work on television was for WMAR, a CBS affiliate that produced a show entitled Caboose. Clash also performed a pelican puppet character for the WTOP- TV television program Zep. In his late teens, Clash met Kermit Love, a puppet designer for the Muppets, who arranged for Clash to observe the Sesame Street set. -
