Building a Center for Grassroots Leadership Chinese Progressive Association Capital Campaign Newsletter

May/June 2006 CPA on the move! The Chinese Progressive Association (CPA) has raised over $1.3 million toward our $1.5 million goal, yet we haven't skipped a beat as we keep organizing for justice, equality and democracy.

Here is how CPA's work has made a difference in the past year alone: Secured Chinese and Vietnamese bilingual ballots and multilingual assistance for Boston voters. Gave Chinatown its fifth year of record voter turnout and the highest percentage increase in voter registration and turnout of any Boston neighborhood. Organized at a grassroots level to create an Asian Pacific American issues platform and a New Majority platform as the basis for citywide voter education efforts. Organized 223 immigrant workers from ten different workplaces to take collective action for their rights and won over $400,000 in severance pay for dislocated workers from three manufacturing plant shutdowns. Initiated an Immigrant Workers Center Collaborative to strengthen local worker organizing in the Chinese, Brazilian, and Latino communities. Worked with tenants in seven Chinatown-area developments, totalling 513 housing units, to help them stay in their homes and improve their quality of life. Helped Chinatown reclaim Parcel 24, a piece of land taken for highway construction fifty years ago, for affordable housing development. Supported youth activists to lead the campaign for a Chinatown branch library. Five hundred guests check out social change art and photography at the We are getting ready to move into our permanent home and March Realizing the Visionfundraising community organizing center.
