Andreassen A dissertation for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor May 2013 Schwa Distribution and acquisition in light of Swiss French data Helene N. Andreassen A dissertation for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor University of Tromsø Department of Language and Linguistics May 2013 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Acknowledgements Someone asked me once how I could spend years of my life studying one single vowel. A few times I have asked myself the same question, but I always end up with the same answer: it is small but oh, so complex and fascinating. Despite its smallness, it grows in complexity and importance the more one digs into the topic. The idea of looking at schwa in children’s speech came to me after a meeting with the Phonology Reading Group at the University of Tromsø. When it was time to write a research proposal, I presented the idea – still quite vague – to my supervisor, Professor Chantal Lyche. Throughout my entire PhD, Chantal has been in Oslo, on the opposite side of Norway, or on one of the world’s other continents, and has made a couple of visits to Tromsø each year. However, I cannot think of a supervisor more present and available to her PhD student. Since the very beginning of this project, Chantal has encouraged me to pursue my ideas, she has guided me to discover relationships in my data, she has pushed me to work hard on the tricky parts, and through her expertise in linguistics and her ability to see the common thread, she has made me write – and finish – a thesis where the different components connect.

Bogner , B. Hingray and A. Musy Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - Lausanne, ENAC-HYDRAM, CH-1015 Lausanne, Switzerland ([email protected]) Abstract: Although the inherent uncertainty associated with rainfall-runoff processes is well known, most mathematical models of such systems are completely deterministic in nature. Stochastic modelling requires that the uncertainty, which is associated with both the model parameters and the stochastic inputs, should be quantified in some manner as an inherent part of the modelling analysis. To achieve these objectives, a Data-based mechanistic (DBM) modelling approach will be tested for the Jura lake system (Switzerland).

Most of the women appearing in this booklet are new PhD’s or just entering the profession, although some are employed but looking for new positions. Most are seeking tenure-track jobs, although some may consider a one-year, visiting, or non-tenure earning position. These candidates were required to condense their considerable skills, talents, and experience into just two pages. We also forced the candidates to identify their two major areas of interest, expertise, and/or experience, using our categories. The candidates may well have preferred different categories. Please carefully read the brief resumes to see if the candidates meet your needs. We urge you to contact the candidates directly for additional information on what they have to offer your program. On behalf of FWIG we thank you for considering these newest members of our profession. If we can be of any help, please do not hesitate to call on either of us. Sincerely !Dr. J. Rosie Tighe Dr. K. Economic History Working Papers No: 250/2016 Multiple Core Regions: Regional Inequality in Switzerland, 1860 to 2008 Christian Stohr London School of Economics Economic History Department, London School of Economics and Political Science, Houghton Street, London, WC2A 2AE, London, UK. T: +44 (0) 20 7955 7084. F: +44 (0) 20 7955 7730 LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND POLITICAL SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC HISTORY WORKING PAPERS NO. 250 - SEPTEMBER 2016 Multiple Core Regions: Regional Inequality in Switzerland, 1860 to 2008 Christian Stohr London School of Economics Abstract This paper estimates regional GDP for three different geographical levels in Switzerland. My analysis of regional inequality rests on a heuristic model featuring an initial growth impulse in one or several core regions and subsequent diffusion. As a consequence of the existence of multiple core regions Swiss regional inequality has been comparatively low at higher geographical levels. Spatial diffusion of economic growth has occurred across different parts of the country and within different labor market regions at the same time. This resulted in a bell- shape evolution of regional inequality at the micro regional level and convergence at higher geographical levels. In early and in late stages of the development process, productivity differentials were the main drivers of inequality, whereas economic structure was determinant between 1888 and 1941.
